Instructional Activities: 4

Zachariah Deans

On November third I was able to lead a lesson during the seventh hour. Today we started talking
about periodic trends. The first trend we discussed was the different between groups/families and
periods. We used near pod to give the presentation and one note for guided notes for the students to
reflect on and to complete worksheets. We then went over what alkali metals and alkaline earth metals
are, by use of discussion and why watching a few movie clips that gave great examples of the element’s
reactivity with water. It would have been great to do some of the safer ones in class with students as a
lab project but because of past incidents, these elements are no longer permitted on school grounds. If I
was going to change something I would want to add more interactive activities to help the students be
more engaged in the lesson. Students seemed to receive the information well but it was difficult to tell
due to the lack of participation from the students. I am unsure this is because of the students coming off
almost a year of covid online learning. Yet, in each class we have a max participation of 3 to 4 students,
so this makes things a little difficult.
