Hafa Adai Marlin Families,

The Holiday Season is upon us and I want to wish all of our families a wonderful and restful Holiday season. I want to
thank our families, students, faculty, and staff for participating in our monthly PTO meetings. I also want to thank
everyone for their efforts and support in ensuring all students have a safe, productive educational learning
environment. For the next several weeks in December, our students will be having busy, fun-filled learning activities
and events. We look forward to seeing our students perform in the annual Holiday program. More details are
forthcoming. Please take the time to share with your child(ren) a holiday family tradition or story.

COUNSELOR’S CORNER PREK-GATE

Season Greetings to you all! As we get closer to the
end of the year now is the time for us all to reflect
on the triumphs and challenges you and your child
have experienced either in their personal and/or
academic life. This year brought about many unique
challenges! Last month students learned about
Thanksgiving and gratitude. If you would like to
further establish a regular routine for being thankful
you and your family can create a gratitude jar. Your
child can add notes every day, every week, or simply

December Virtue "Generosity": Being careful with
what I have so that I can share; giving your time,
attention, hard work, patience, kind words, and
talents to help and encourage others.
Happy Holidays, Mini-Marlin Families!
This month, our mini-Marlins will be learning and
having fun with winter and holiday themed activities!
We will continue to integrate all standards within the
activities such as communication, creative thinking,
and independent learning... and we’ll sprinkle in a
little magic in there as well!
In the classroom, we “focus on the process, rather
than the product” when working with your child in
completing activities. This is accomplished by allowing
children to complete assignments with their own two
little hands while following grown-up guidance. The
lines may not be cut “perfectly”, they may get some
glue on the table, and it may not be what we, as
adults, were visualizing, but this allows your child to
feel confident in practicing new skills, expressing
his/her creativity, and truly engage in learning. Here’s

 HEADSTART
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Happy Holidays
Head Start Families! This month we have ended our Ball
studies and now noticed that our children often ask
questions about our building when we are outside. They
want to know the height of the school building, what it’s
made of, and how strong it is. They also ask many questions
about the way it looks. Their ongoing interest in our building
helped us realize that buildings would make a good study
topic. As we study buildings, we will learn concepts and skills
in science, social studies, literacy, math, the arts, and
technology. We will also be using thinking skills to
investigate, ask questions, solve problems, make predictions,
and test our ideas. At the end of our study, we will have a
special event to show you what we’ve learned. Thank you for
playing an important role in our learning. Have a wonderful

KINDERGARTEN
Merry Christmas Parents! Don't miss our performances on
the MES website! It will be posted on December 16th and
17th.
Please check with your child's teacher for any assistance
with attire color and props (if needed). Please help your
child focus on the following skills at home:
1. Reading/Language: Initial, middle and ending sounds
(example c a t) say the initial c, then middle a, then
ending t sounds. Practice sight words, and continue with
identifying letter name and sounds.
2.Math: Rote counting (1,2,3,4... up to 100), identify and
write 0-30, and practice counting by 10's from any given
number.
3. ELA: practice sentences using correct CAPITAL, s p a c e
s, and punctuation marks ( . ! ?).
4. Science: Practice identifying and retelling what plants,
animals, and humans do that change their environment
(example: beaver uses a tree to make a dam, humans
mimic what animals do to survive like a man-made dam.)
5. Social Studies: Identify people in the local community
that help keep the community safe and healthy. Identify
local members that help shape our community in positive
ways (example: mayor, governor, etc...)

FIRST GRADE
Hafa Adai Parents! The year is coming to an end. Thank you

month we are finishing up our first semester standards. At
home please practice these skills: READING- practice blending
sounds together to decode words; MATH- subtraction within
20; and LANGUAGE ARTS- Identifying the different types of
nouns (person, animal, place, and thing) within a sentence. If

importance of government then move on to learning about

SPECIAL EDUCATION
Season’s Greetings, Marlins! I would like to share with you
two very important acronyms associated with special
education. The first, IEP, stands for the Individualized
Education Plan. This is the plan that is made to determine,
what services a child will receive, how services will be
delivered, and the duration of services. The second, is the
PLAAFP. The PLAAFP stands for Present Levels of Academic
Achievement and Functional Performance. This is a report
used by teachers to report on a student’s functional levels
in various areas, and how well they perform in the core
subject areas of reading, language arts, and math. For more

Greetings Parents & Guardians
The ESL Program Team of MES would like to wish you cheer
this holiday season and the very best of 2022 as it gradually
approaches, and hope that you will continue practicing safe
measures and remain steadfast at supporting and increasing
your ELL’s English language proficiency skills. We are
committed to ensuring that this occurs at the school level as
well, particularly with regard to academic language that can
often be confusing for young learners in general. For
example, we understand that content terminology for
mathematics such as parallel, fraction, factor, exponent,
or sum is usually misunderstood. Just as challenging are
science-related terms such as Photosynthesis, Nucleus,
or Atmosphere. One of our program objectives is to focus on
building an understanding and the appropriate application of
such content vocabulary which are not used often by ELLs
when communicating with peers, especially during common
social interactions at the playground or cafeteria. The New

child accesses regularly and instead have them read short-
story books. Small changes in routines can lead to huge

GIFTED AND TALENTED EDUCATION
GATErs will be "jingling" all the way to December and into
the new year! Students have already started constructing
their waterpark themed project in the classroom by using
the engineering design process: Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create,
Experiment, and Improve. Through this project, students
are learning how to be divergent thinkers (thinking outside
of the box, being fluent in ideas, providing details), critical
thinkers, and creative problem solvers (being able to find a
solution when faced with a problem and making
improvements to their project ). Once they construct their
waterpark, students will learn how to be effective
communicators by providing reasons why people should visit
their waterpark. December is definitely one of the busiest
time and the most hap-happiest time of the
