ANALYTICAL EXPOSITORY TEXT

GUIDED WRITING

After you did your free-chosen topic about guided discussion text last week, there are a few points you
need to pay attention before you start writing your analytical expository writing assignment:
1. Make clear introduction of the issue; why the issue needs audience’s attention.
2. Lead to frame that the issue will be analysed and supported with arguments.
3. Start to introduce supporting argument 1, 2, 3, 4 … explain thoroughly so the argument you
present can support your argument.
4. Close with concluding statements which embrace all arguments you have presented and
strengthen the topic you raise.
5. Title should be specific, not too general.
TITLE
Introduction to the issue: why the issue needs to be raised – probing information to draw
people’s attention
Make it clear: what do you want to analyse?
Strengthening the writer’s point of view.
Problem is seen from writer’s point of view only, supported by:
Argument 1 – explanation why audience must agree with it
Argument 2 – explanation why audience must agree with it
Argument 3 – explanation why audience must agree with it
Argument 4 – explanation why audience must agree with it
Conclusion: emphasize if the writer’s points of view is worth to consider
Remember: only concluding statement – no statement to ask the audience to follow or do
something according to the content of the writing – audience is expected to agree with the
writer’s standpoint

After you understand the above points, choose from the following topic to be developed into an
analytical expository text.
1. The extensive use of plastic as shopping bag in daily life bears negative consequences.
2. Being vegan in this era is a wise decision.
3. The application of technology in genetic food modification opens wider opportunities for food
sustainability.
4. Efforts to settle life with green technology helps earth to recover from destruction.
5. Digital technology advancement creates insecure life.
6. The paperless life benefits certain business groups and brings down paper-based business.

Digital technology advancement creates insecure life

In the modern era that we are currently living in, we can see any sort of technology everywhere. In fact,
we needed it so much to the point where we won’t be able to live our lives without it. As time goes on,
technology keeps advancing in order to support our everyday lives. From letters to emails, from
telephones to smartphones, all of them seem to provide convenience for us. However, this
technological advancement especially digital could lead to us having insecurities in our lives.

There are many forms of digital technology as of now, and social media is one of them. Nowadays, we
are glued to our phones because of social media. Despite the good things that social media has to
offer, it could feed our insecurities. According to a Huffington Post poll, it is found that 60 percent of
people using social media reported that it has impacted their self-esteem in a negative way. They also
found that 51 percent say social media has made them feel more self-conscious about their
appearance. The reason is that many celebrities or even our friends will likely post many photos to
boast about their wealth and appearance, and it will surely make us reflect on ourselves and cause
insecurities.

Unfortunately, our personal data is not the only one at stake. Well, In mid-2018, a reporter for Vice
experimented to see just how closely smartphones listen to our conversations. To test it, the reporter
said the phrase ‘cheap shirts’, and the very next day, an advertisement for low-cost apparel on his
Facebook feed. So, to simplify, our smartphones are secretly listening to our everyday conversations
and sending them to social media, giving us ads that surprisingly match the things we said in our
conversations.

What is scarier is that if we use social media, then our privacy is at stake. For example, according to
BBC News, there was a scandal where Facebook is being sued for failing to protect users' personal
data in the Cambridge Analytica breach and it resulted in more than 87 million people’s data being used
for advertising during elections. This is surely making the teenagers like us feel unsafe, as we always
use social media apps belonging to Facebook such as Instagram and Whatsapp.

Not only social media but websites that we usually surf on the internet could cause insecurities in our
lives. Almost all websites have advertisements with pictures that seem inappropriate to young
audiences such as pornographic pictures. What’s worse is that some of them, if accidentally clicked,
will give malware or viruses to the devices that we are using. This surely creates a sense of anxiety
when we want to use websites again for important things.
All in all, despite that it has grown on us teenagers, social media has downsides that could lead us to
have insecurities in life. And not only that, it could even lead to something worse than you would have
ever imagined. In the end, just don’t be careless or social media would affect your lives for the worse.
