CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

PROJECT CONTEXT

One of the major problems today in society is sickness and viruses. Colds, flu, cough,

and sore throat are what we may call common, but now we face a pandemic called

Covid19. People are looking for the best way to protect themselves against these said

virus. The World Health Organization (WHO) has often reminded us that frequent

handwashing with soap can help us kill disease-causing germs thus preventing the

disease itself altogether. But not all the time do we have the soap to wash our hands like

if we are in the mall, or the market, or outside of our house. One of the solutions to this

problem is to bring a bottle of alcohol wherever you go, but studies have shown that

alcohol, as effective as it is in killing germs, can dry out skin. Then there came the rise

of hand sanitizers. Using hand sanitizer is an effective way of killing germs. It is an

alternative to handwashing with soap and water. But in this existing problem hand

sanitizer or alcohol is running out in every supermarket or in a boutique because it's

very in demand. And some people cannot afford to buy hand sanitizer. That is why

researchers decided to create a coin-operated hand sanitizer refill vending machine.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Edna’s pasalubong is a store that sells different kinds of foods like sweet
SAN PEDRO CITY POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE

bread, nuts , and etc. The mission and vision is to serve and provide the best retailer of

convenience for emerging markets. And to make daily life easier by providing modern

convenience.in fulfilling its goals. Edna’s Pasalubong is one of the popular pasalubong

stores that sells different snacks such as biscuits, nuts, chips, jellies, gummies, etc. in

Pacita complex of San Pedro City, Laguna. Their mission and vision are to serve and

provide not only their best-selling products but also the best food and snacks to offer to

their customers. Moreover, due to its popularity, the number of customers that visit

Edna’s pasalubong is increasing. More than 200 people per day visit and purchase food

products in their store. The explicit number of those customers is given below. Due to

the pandemic, Edna’s pasalubong provides alcohol or sanitizers for their customers.

However, this cannot suffice for the large numbers of customers that enter their store to

purchase their product. In this case, the proponents want to provide a coin-operated

hand sanitizer/alcohol refill vending machine to Edna’s Pasalubong Store in order for

them to provide retail alcohol to their customers. This Coin-Operated Hand

Sanitizer/Alcohol Refiller Vending Machine is a system machine that offers budget-

friendly alcohol where users or customers can select their desired amount of alcohol to

refill. This will also help the retail business not run out of alcohol or sanitizer.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
SAN PEDRO CITY POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE

The model shown above was the IPO (Input-Process-Output) model. The words

under each letter present the included data gathering and the outcome for this study. In

(Input) Is insufficient sanitation supplies, and third is Price hike of sanitizer due to

COVID-19 crisis. The P (Process) are Hassle free, Can choose what preferred amount

of alcohol needed the O (Output) is to create a Coin-operated Hand Sanitizer Vending

machine for Edna’s pasalubong barangay pacita 1, San Pedro City Laguna

PURPOSE AND DESCRIPTION

Alcohol machines have as a goal to provide sanitary facilities to people, in

SAN PEDRO CITY POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE

public locations, such as comfort rooms, public markets, etc. as we have an interest in

security nowadays and we must defend ourselves against COVID-19. We must clean

ourselves, particularly while we are in public areas, to avoid the spread of the infection.

The alcohol supplier is supplied through a system. The system offers choices on how

many litres of alcohol you need to receive, and the payment process can be done by

dropping coins on the alcohol supplier. The alcohol press is practical and easy to handle

since the machine does not need data or internet to manage it and automatically fills up

the alcohol container with just a click on the preferred amount, which is not just now

but will also be useful in the future because we never know when this pandemic will

last.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

A. General problem

Because of the current epidemic, alcohol and sanitizers are critical. Many

supermarkets, convenience stores, and medicine stores are out of alcohol and sanitizer

and have no idea when they will be replenished. The majority of people who buy

alcohol and sanitizers do it on the cheap or at a low cost.

B. Specific problem

• Due to the actual observation of the proponents of the information

gathered, customers most need a retail and affordable sanitizer for the

small amount needed for all those people who find a poor rate of alcohol

and sanitizer.

• Those people need to buy alcohol and sanitizers for a quick purchase, not
SAN PEDRO CITY POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE

only at the market but also in the other store.

• Edna’s pasalubong stores do not have a bulk stock of alcohol to give the

essential quantity of consumers' purchases.

• Most of the customers choose the smallest amount of alcohol and

sanitizer. Maybe it's not in most but affordable to buy.

• Most of the owners have difficulty finding the suppliers if their alcohol is

out of stock.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

a. General Objectives

This study aims to solve the problem of running out of hand sanitizer in

supermarkets, malls, or boutiques. This study will help consumers to refill their sanitizer

at an affordable price and in easy ways. They don't need to go to markets or boutiques to

2.1.6 How the project will work
In this phase, the problem is defined based on the actual observations of the

proponents. They came up with the study to provide a solution to the existing problem,

such as consumers buying sanitizers. There are times when people do not think to buy a

sanitizer despite the fact that it is necessary, especially in today's situation, due to the

fact that its price is high for some buyers, regardless of the sanitizer's size.

For this reason, the proponents decided to create a system entitled "COIN OPERATED

ALCOHOL VENDING MACHINE." This is to provide vending machine sanitizers for

SAN PEDRO CITY POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE

buyers who want sanitizers at an affordable price. It is a coin-based vending machine

where buyers can use the machine to refill their bottles. In the second phase, the

proponents conducted a survey about the difficulties of buying a sanitizer and also

investigated other problems associated with it, as well as evaluating an alternative

solution to that certain problem. On the other hand, for the third phase, the proponents

plan to create the design of the study and create a system that can help to solve this

problem.

2.1.7 Details of the technologies to be used

2.2 Local Related Conceptual Literature

2.2.1 COIN-OPERATED COFFEE VENDING MACHINE Pinili, Ellen Gold B.

Ponce, Mary Rosechelle S. (2003)

Nowadays, automated machines are in demand because they make numerous

activities not only easier but also more efficient. These machines require minimal

human intervention to do their job. A vending machine is one of these automated

machines which make people’s lives more convenient.

These vending machines have made their mark on the market. From sanitary supplies to

beverages, vending machines have gained their throne as one of the sales strategies in

the business world. Starting their operation using conventional mechanical controls,

vending machines have employed electronic components to add more functional

features to them and to increase the accuracy of their system operation.

SAN PEDRO CITY POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE

This study focuses on the design and implementation of a Coin-Operated Coffee

Vending Machine that can dispense different mixtures of hot coffee through dropping a

specified number of five-peso coins in a coin slot. These mixtures are categorized as

black coffee, sweetened black coffee and sweetened coffee with creamer, each of which

comes in different prices. The machine accepts five-peso coins and will not accept any

other type of coins. Once the coin/coins have been dropped, the machine automatically

dispenses the right mixture.

The Coin-Operated Coffee Vending Machine will cater the needs of the

customers with no further human intervention required. The machine is user-friendly

and is very simple to operate. The customers will only have to deal with the number of

five-peso coins to be dropped into the machine, which will correspond to the amount of

hot coffee to be dispensed. With this innovation, labor costs will be minimized, and it

will also give entrepreneurs the opportunity to attract more customers.

2.2.2 Design and Implementation of Paper Vending Machine for Retail of Common

Usable Papers for Unstop Students Erich P. Abad1

Today’s modern business is all about process automation. This automation is

simply the integration of software and machines; from simple to complex automation, it

is a strategy aimed at increased profits, ease of management, and varied multitasking.

Vending machines are one example of an automation business process in which it

SAN PEDRO CITY POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE

utilizes meager supervision of the user. There are a lot of varieties and forms of

automation using vending machines.

The photocopy/printing shop here at the University of Science and Technology

of the Southern Philippines offers diverse services to its clientele. Primarily, it offers

document photocopying and printing services. But somehow, with the owner’s business

innovativeness, it also offers the sale of commodities such as candies, sliced fruits,

papers (bond papers, newsprint, and yellow paper) and so much more. With a minimum

of one to two people manning the shop, it caters to a whole lot of students on the

campus. Among the commodities offered that are considered very stressful and

painstaking in serving their plentiful clientele are the retail of common papers,

short/long/A4 bond papers, newsprints, and yellow papers. These papers are usually

used as answer sheets by the students in the exams. The cost per piece of paper is Php

1.00. This project aims to develop and implement automated piece-by-piece retail of

common papers. This vending machine will dispense short/long/A4 bond papers,

newsprints and yellow papers. This machine utilizes a coin-slot to accommodate Php

1.00, Php 5.00, and P10.00 coins. The buyer will simply select the type of paper and

insert the coin/s. This machine will not dispense change in amount.

2.3.1 Design of Automatic Hand Sanitizer System Compatible with Various

Containers

Juhui Lee, Jin-Young Lee, Sung-Min Cho, Ki-Cheol Yoon, Young Jae Kim, and
Kwang Gi Kim (31, July 2020)
SAN PEDRO CITY POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE

Hand sanitizers are usually applied by squirting the sanitizer liquid when one

presses a pump with one's hand. This causes many people to come into contact with the

pump handle, which increases the risk of viral transmission. Some users may think that

it is a hassle to re-use sanitize their hands, so they pour other products into previously

used containers and reuse them. It is not economical and it has a negative impact on the

environment by increasing waste emissions.

Automatic hand sanitizer system that is compatible with various containers. With

the proposed device, it is possible to avoid many people coming into contact with the

pump handle, thus preventing fomite viral transmission. It is economical and eco-

friendly by decreasing waste emissions. The device is ultimately expected to contribute

to contactless hand disinfection and virus infection prevention.

2.3.2 A Novel Automatic Sanitizer Dispenser Rakshith L., Dr. K B Shiva Kumar

(2020)

The hand sanitizer is an exceptional bit of late innovation from the 19th century

and was developed during the 1960s, but became popular in the 1990s. In this current

pandemic it is exhorted by WHO (world health organization) to keep up the healthy

sanitizing habits, yet the manner in which we do it, that is, by the physical touch to the

container which doesn't fulfill the purpose.

SAN PEDRO CITY POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE

The Ultrasonic sensor has an echo and trig pins which are receiver and transmitter

respectively, by the algorithms the sensor is adjusted to get trigger within the particular

distance, when the hand is placed in the required distance, the sensor send the signals to

the Arduino Nano then the Arduino sends signal to the 5V relay board, which is

triggered and activate the motor to pump sanitize

2.3.3 Hand hygiene behavior in a pediatric emergency department and a pediatric

intensive care unit: comparison of use of two dispenser system Larson, E. L.,

Albrecht, S., O'Keefe, M (2005)

Unwashed hands of healthcare workers often become reservoirs of infectious

pathogens and serve as media for pathogen transmission. Hand hygiene is considered as

the single most important approach for preventing nosocomial infections. However, the

compliance rates of hand hygiene in healthcare workers are typically low. Multiple

factors, such as the fragrance of hand hygiene products and the location of sinks and

dispensers, may impact hand hygiene compliance rate.

Environmental design may help to increase hand hygiene compliance rate. One

design intervention is a type of alcohol-based gel sanitizer dispenser that was battery-

operated and touch free. Healthcare workers may be more willing to use the touch-free

dispensers because these dispensers are more convenient to use and associated with

lower risk of transmitting pathogens through touching contaminated dispenser switches.

2.5.5 Design and Fabrication of Coin Operated Portable Water Vending Machine
DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING, ATMECE, MYSURU

(2017) Coin Operated Water Dispensing System as the name indicates it is based on

COIN operation. It has been specially designed for use on Railway station, Bus deposes,

public places etc. This system is based on microcontroller. The inputs to the

microcontroller are coin and output in the form of water. Looking at the specifications

required for Water Dispensing System and for simplicity of our application,

microcontroller was found to be best suited. Now-a-days, automated vending machines

are most in use as they make various activities not only easier but also more efficient.

The machine has numerous input and outputs to provide service to the customer. This

machine is similar to vending machine. It is coin operated machine. It accepts only coins

as input like Rs.1 in any sequence and delivers drinking water. The main motto of this
SAN PEDRO CITY POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE

system is to avoid the environmental pollution and also to avoid the wastage of water

with the help of water control valve. We know that the available water resources have

initiated towards the end. This problem is quietly related to poor water allocation,

inefficient use, and lack of adequate and integrated water management. Since last few

decades, several monitoring systems integrated with water level detection have been

accepted; therefore, water controlling system implementations have potential

significance in the society. Vending machine is going to be developed in such a way that

water will get served to the customers. As it is coin operated machine, the required

quantity of water and respective amount of money is decided that are affordable for

common people
