1. SpaceX: First Private Space Company to send NASA astronauts to


space

The SpaceX has become the first private rocket company to send astronauts to space.
The company sent Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken to space initiating a new business
model for NASA.

1. Highlights
According to the US Government, the mission will end the reliance of NASA on Russian
space rockets.

2. Why is a private Space Company hired?


NASA had plans to hand over the transport of crew to the space since 2000s. This
decision came up after the Columbia Space Shuttle broke up while returning to the earth
in 2003. In order to make space programmes such as transfer of crew and food to the
International Space Station affordable; the step has been taken.

3. SpaceX
SpaceX was the first private company in the world to return rockets back to the earth.
Usually the rockets burn away after putting the satellites on their orbit or simply get
thrown away to the space adding up space debris.

4. The US-Russia Factor


NASA has been paying millions of dollars to Russia to launch its astronauts. This is the
first launch of humans by the US in the decade.

5. Crew Dragon
The Spacecraft that is transporting the Astronauts to the International Space Station
(ISS) is called Crew Dragon. The Crew Dragon is capable of carrying seven passengers.
The Crew Dragon will return the astronauts after their tasks associated with the ISS is
complete. The Crew Dragon is to parachute down into the Atlantic Ocean.

6. Starman Suits
The Suits worn by the astronauts are called the Starman suits. They are designed only to
be worn inside Crew Dragon and are not meant for spacewalks.

2. Jal Jeevan Mission: Funds allocated to Assam and Bihar

The Central Government has allocated Rs 1,832 crores to Bihar and Rs 1,407 crores to
Assam under Jal Jeevan Mission.

1. Assam
In Assam, the Jal Jeevan mission aims to provide tap connections to over 13 lakh rural
households by 2020-21. The state aims weaker and marginalized sections on priority
basis. Village Action Plans have been framed with active participation of the rural
community.

2. Bihar
With the help of funds allocated, the Bihar Government will offer tap connections to
more than 50 lakh households. The Government is focusing on aspirational districts and
SC ST villages.

3. Jal Jeevan Mission


The Mission aims to supply 55 litres of water to all rural household by 2024. The mission
will create necessary infrastructure such as ground water recharge, rainwater harvest
and management of household waste water for reuse.

3. Unlock 1.0; Lock Down 5.0 begins in India

India is now seventh worst hit country in the world with more than 1,82,143 cases of
COVID-19. In the battle against the virus, India enters into fifth lock down or first unlock
on June 1, 2020. This is to remain in order till June 30, 2020.

1. Highlights
The Ministry of Home Affairs has provided the guidelines for unlock 1.0. Under the
guidelines, the Centre has extended lock down to all the containment zones. In rest of
the zones, almost all the social facilities are to be open.

2. Containment Zones
In the zones declared to be contained, there will be strict perimeter control. No
movement of people in and out of the containment zones are to be allowed. The
containment zones will only have entry of essential goods and medical supply. Intensive
contact tracing, house-to-house surveillance and clinical interventions are to be
introduced.

3. Prohibitions of Lock Down 5


The metro rail services are to remain closed throughout the country during lock down
5.0. The night curfew, that is, prohibition of movement of people between 9 AM and 5 PM
throughout the nation is to be implemented. People above the age of 65 and below the
age of 10 have been advised to stay inside homes.

4. Unlock Phase II
After the period of unlock phase I, that ends on June 30, 2020, the GoI has planned to
implement Unlock phase II. During this phase, coaching centres, colleges, schools and
educational institutions are to be opened.

5. Unlock Phase III


During Unlock Phase III, swimming pools, metro rail, entertainment parks, cinema halls
and gyms are to be opened.

4. New Asteroid discovered near Jupiter

Astronauts have recently discovered a rare space object. The object looks like both
asteroid and comet. The new space object is called Active Asteroid

1. Highlights
The asteroid has been named 2019 LD2. It has an orbit like an asteroid and a tail like a
comet. The 2019 LD2 shares the orbit of Jupiter and is a part of the asteroid swarm
called Jupiter Trojans.

2. The Findings
The discovery has also provided evidence that the Jupiter Trojans have large amounts of
ice beneath their surfaces. So far, there was no evidence for presence of ice beneath
their surface.

3. How did the tail form?


The unique tail that makes the asteroid look like comet, according to the researchers is
probably because of collision. The collision should have led to gas leak from the ice
cracking and forming the tail.

4. Active Asteroids
Active Asteroids are celestial bodies that look like comet and have asteroid like orbit.
The first active asteroid discovered was Elst Pizarro.

5. PM Modi launches “My Life My Yoga”

On May 31, 2020, PM Modi launched “My Life My Yoga”, a video blogging contest. The
contest is to be conducted as a joint effort of Ministry of AYUSH and ICMR (Indian Council
of Cultural Research).

1. Highlights
The contest is being launched to inspire people to participate in the sixth International
Day of Yoga (IDY) that is to be celebrated in 21st June, 2020. Any participant from the
world can take part in the contest.

2. Yoga
India has taken several measures to make people in India and all over the world to adopt
yogic practices. India also took Yoga to United Nations in 2014. A resolution was brought
in and International Day of Yoga is being celebrated on June 21, 2015 since then.

6. Scorpaenospsis neglecta: Rare fish found in Gulf of Mannar

The Researchers at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute have found a rare
fish from the Gulf of Mannar. The specimen was deposited at the National Marine
Biodiversity Museum of Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI).

1. Highlights
The fish is locally called Scorpion Fish for its venomous tail. When the spines in the tail
pierces an individual, the venom gets injected and causes severe pain. This is the first
time, the species has been found alive in the Indian waters.

7. China objects the presence of US THAAD missile in South Korea

THAAD is Terminal High Altitude Area Defense. It is a transportable and ground-based


missile defense system.

1. What is the issue?


China believes that US is exerting its influence over South Korea and Japan. This may
interfere China’s long term diplomatic, military and economic interests in the region.
China has been reiterating its long-standing objections about the presence of US THAAD
missile defence system in South Korea.

2. South Korea-China
US announced that THAAD missile system operated in the South Korean soil is a counter
measure against attacks by North Korea. In 2017, the tensions in the region escalated
when North Korea test fired its missiles in the direction of US bases in Japan.

3. About THAAD
The THAAD is an anti-ballistic missile system. It was developed after the US experiences
in the Gulf War, 1991. THAAD has been deployed in Israel, UAE, Romania and South
Korea. THAAD is capable of destroying missiles by colliding with them. It uses Kinetic Kill
Technology to achieve this.

8. GoI discontinues 7.75% savings bonds

The Reserve Bank of India recently announced that the Government of India has
discontinued 7.75% savings bonds.

1. Highlights
The 7.75% savings bonds that are also called government bonds or RBI bons were issued
in 2018. They were available for the resident citizens of India alone. The value of one
bond was Rs 1000 and there was no maximum limit of investment. The interests of the
bonds were taxed under Income Tax Act, 1961.

2. Other Measures
The rates of Small Savings scheme were cut. Also, the rates of PPF were cut from 7.9%
to 7.1%. On the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, the rates were cut from 8.4% to 7.6%. RBI
also reduced the repo rates twice after COVID-19.

3. Savings Bonds
The bonds are like guarantees provided by the GoI. On investing on these bonds, the GoI
will return the amount with maturity at 7.75% interest rate. However, due to global
recession, Government has now recently stopped issuing these bonds.

The United States is facing nation wide protests over the death of an African American
George Floyd.

1. Highlights
George Floyd, an African American man of age 46 died after the police arrested him near
a shop in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This has created the current unrest in the country.

2. Black Lives Matter Movement


The Black Lives Movement is an African-American movement that campaigns against
violence and racism towards black people. The movement campaigns against killings of
black people, police brutality, racial profiling and racial inequality in the United States.
The movement began in 2013. The movement spread to Canada, Australia and Germany
as well.

10. Rohit Sharma nominated for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award

On May 31, 2020, the BCCI nominated Rohit Sharma for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna
Awards. The Award is considered to be the highest sporting honour award in India.

The period of consideration for a person to get nominated is from January 2016 to
December 2019. Rohit has become the first T20 cricketer to score four centuries. Also,
he holds record of 150 plus score in around 8 ODIs. He also holds the greatest number of
centuries in ODI matches since 2017, that numbered to 18.

2. Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award
The award is the highest sporting honour of India. The award is presented by the
Ministry of Youth Affairs and sports. The award is presented for outstanding performance

Operation Flood was launched in 1970. The operation aimed at doubling milk availability
per person in the country. The operation also helped to generation employment in the
rural sector. Through the success of the operation, India became the largest milk
producer.

12. Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Janaushadhi Kendra: Sales up to Rs 100


crores

On June 1, 2020, the Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Janaushadhi Kendra achieved sales up to
Rs 100.40 crores in the first two months of the financial year 2020-21. The sales were
high as compared to the sales in the same two months period of 2019-20.

The Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Janaushadhi Kendra have saved Rs 800 crores through the
sales of medicines in the two months of the financial year 2020-21. The Bureau of
Pharma PSUs of India (BPPI) are responsible for the success. It is the BPPI that

The think tank of India, NITI Aayog organized convention on agreological and natural
farming approaches in the country. The convention was attended by international
experts, policy makers.

The think tank presented current plans of India at the convention. According to NITI
Aayog, Natural Farming that predominantly depends on cow dung, biomass, urine, soil
aeration and mulch is indigenous system of farming in the country. India intends to
reach 20 lakh hectares of organic farming in the next five years. Of this, 12 lakh
hectares are to be brought under Bharatiya Prakritik Krishi Paddhati Programme.

14. One Nation One Card Scheme: Three more States included

On June 1, 2020, the Union Minister of Consumer Affairs and Food and Public distribution
Shri Ram Vilas Paswan announced that three more states namely Sikkim, Odisha and
Mizoram are being included in the Integrated Management of Public Distribution System
(PDS).

Through the Integrated Management of PDS, the Government of India is trying to reach
the benefits of National Food Security Act through One Nation One Ration Card scheme.
So far, the scheme has been enabled in 17 states and Union Territories. They include
Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Gujarat,
Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Kerala, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra,
Punjab, Tripura, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh.

15. “Ultra Swachh” Booth developed by DRDO to disinfect PPEs

The Defence Research Development Organization (DRDO) developed a disinfection unit


called Ultra Swachh. The unit is used to disinfect articles such as electronic items,
Personal Protective Equipment, fabrics, etc.

1. About the unit


The Unit uses an advanced oxidative process called Ozonated Space Technology to
disinfect the items. The device also uses Ozone Sealant Technology that involves
trapping of Ozone.

2. Ozone as disinfectant
Ozone is an oxidizing compound that rapidly oxidizes organic materials, manganese,
iron, etc. Ozone is highly unstable and oxidises to form oxygen within 15 to 20 seconds.
This property of ozone is used in disinfection.

16. GoI launches PM SVANidhi scheme

On June 1, 2020, Government of India launched the Pradhan Mantri SVANidhi Scheme for
street vendors. The Union cabinet has cleared the credit amount for the scheme as well

The PM SVANidhi or PM Street Vendors Atmanirbhar Nidhi is a credit facility scheme that
will help more than 50 lakh urban and rural street vendors. The scheme will help the
street vendors restart their livelihoods.

2. Atma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan


The scheme announced Rs 20 lakh crore package to revive Indian Economy. The amount
allocated is 10% of India’s GDP.

The member countries at the United Nations fixed that 10% of GDP is to be spent on
reviving economies. This was fixed by the Global Plan framed at the United Nations.

17. Technology Platform called CHAMPIONS launched by PM Modi

On June 1, 2020, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched technology platform called
CHAMPIONS. CHAMPIONS Stand for Creation and Harmonious Application of Modern
Processes for Increasing the Output and National Strength.

18. GoI increases Minimum Support Price of 14 Kharif crops

On June 1, 2020, the Union Cabinet approved hike of Minimum Support Price of 14 Kharif
crops.

1. Highlights
The Minimum Support Price of Paddy has been increased by Rs 53 per quintal. The MSP
of paddy has been fixed at Rs 1,868 per quintal for the year 2020-21. The rates of
pulses, oil seeds and cereals have also been increased.

The scheme consists of three sub-schemes namely Price Deficiency Payment Scheme,
Price Support Scheme, Private Procurement and Stocklist Scheme.

19. Real Time Electricity Market launched by Indian Energy Exchange

On June 1, 2020, Indian Energy Exchange launched Real Time Electricity Market (RTM).
The main aim of the launch is to help discoms plan their power requirements.

It is a statutory body that was set up under the Electricity Act 2003. It is Quasi-Judicial
Body. Quasi-Judicial body is a non-judicial body that can interpret law.

20. Union Cabinet approves change of definition of MSMEs

On June 1, 2020, the Union Cabinet approved the changes made to the definition of
MSMEs. The Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman had announced about the changes
being made to MSMEs while she announced the economic package allocated to Atma
Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan.

According to the new definition, MSMEs with investment till Rs 1 crore and turn over of
Rs 5 crores have been classified as Micro units. The MSMEs with investment of Rs 10
crore and turn over of Rs 50 crores are classified as small units. The MSMEs with
investment Rs 50 crore and turn over upto Rs 250 crores have been classified as
medium units

2. Significance
The change in definition will help attract investment, improve ease of doing business,
create jobs. There are more than 60 million MSMEs in the country. They contribute to
29% of India’s GDP and are offering 110 million jobs. The MSMEs also contribute 48% of
total exports of India. Therefore, it is highly important to keep the MSME sector alive.
The COVID-19 and the lock down imposed have affected the MSME badly. Thus, the
change in definition will help boost the MSME sector in a big way.

21. Telangana celebrates Statehood Day

The State of Telangana was formed on June 2, 2014. To commemorate the formation of
the state, every year Telangana Statehood Day is celebrated on June 2.

On March 4, 2014, the Union Government of India announced 2nd June, 2014 as the
Telangana Formation Day. Telangana was the 28th state to be formed in the Union of
India. During its formation, it was decided that both the states Andhra Pradesh and
Telangana will share Hyderabad as their capital for 10 years. Later, Seemandhra will
establish its own capital. However, the revenues of Hyderabad will be enjoyed only by
Telangana. Also, no special status was provided to Seemandhra.

2. Formation of Telangana
The Telangana movement led to the formation of the state of Telangana. In 1953, States

extended to certain identified lists such as semiconductor devices, electronic goods,
display fabrication units, etc.

4. EMC 2.0
The Modified Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMC 2.0) will support in creating world
class infrastructure. The scheme will help in attracting global electronics manufacturers
