INTRODUCTION

Jewelry consists of small decorative items worn for

personal adornment, such as rings, earrings, necklace
etc. Jewelry may be attached to the body or the clothes.
The word jewelry itself is derived from word “JEWEL”
Anglicized from old French “JOVEL”. The first signs of
jewelry came from the people of Africa. Perforated beads
suggesting shell. Jewelry made from sea snail’s shells &
have been found dating to 75000 years ago at Blombos
cave.

Before I outline these traits, it’s important to

consider the different types of jewelry. Some creations
respond to transient fashion trends and provide their
wearer with a token of the here and now through
accessible materials, styles and prices. In contrast, high
jewelry is often more creative, less tied to the trends of
the day, requires important gems and more unique
artistry using traditional handmaking skills over mass-
production methods. In fact, most high jewelry
collections are so complex they take two or three years to
complete.
HISTORY
Jewelry is a universal form of adornment. Jewelry
made from shells, stone & bones survives from
Prehistoric times. It is likely that from an early date it
was worn as a protection from the dangers of the life or
as a mark of stuts or rank.
In the ancient world the discovery of hoe to work
metals was an important stage in the development of the
art of jewelery. Over time, metalworking techniques
became more sophisticated & decoration more intricate.
Gold, a rare & highly valued material, was buried
with the dead so as to accompany its owner into the
afterlife. This collar was found in a bog in shannongrove,
co: Limerick, Ireland, sometime before 1783.
The history of traditional Indian jewelry is as old as
indian history. The word jewelery originates from the
Latin word “JOCALE” meaning plaything 5000-7000
years ago during Ramayana & Mahabharata times was
when jewelery & the art of wanting to beauty oneself was
popularized. Traces of beaded jewelery can be found back
to 15000 BC during the Indus Valley civilization.\
Beads, shells don’t really have a shelf life and metals
can be used to make jewelery was discovered later by the
Indus Valley region. Indian had an enormous supply of
precious metals & gems; prospered due to export &
exchange with other nations.
