ACTIVITY #03

Mrs. Mary Precious Gayle Llagas

1. Name 5 incidents of food poisoning in the Philippines and write a narrative report about what
happened.
 The five food poisoning cases that happened in the Philippines are listed below.
 The 37 people that are victim of the food poisoning in Cebu which
happened pretty recent last May of 24 th this year. What happened is
that the 37 performers of the Pentecost Sunday celebration of the
community fell ill after eating what is called “Humba” which is a
Cebuano pork dish served during the activity on May 23 rd of the year
2021. They are then rushed to two private hospitals and are only
suspected for food poisoning. And the caterer from Lapu-lapu City who
prepared the food packs of the said event are subjected to investigation
by the health authorities. The victims are then discharged after
undergoing a four to five hours of medical observation.
 The second report that I have found is from the city of Kidapawan in
Cotabato. The evacuees of Quake-Hit were rushed to the hospitals,
again suspected of food poisoning from the donated food packs. In this
case, the victims are allowed to go home after their health conditions
have improved. And because of this incident, distribution of hot meals
and packed foods for the Quake-Victims are prohibited. But there are
still other ways to help the victims to assist them in their needs.
 In the third case, 231 are in hospital after food poisoning at 90th Imelda
Marcos Party. Emergency rooms in Pasig area are full of patients
vomiting and experiencing diarrhea and dizziness mainly due to food
poisoning. The guests in this party are served with “Adobo” with
potatoes and hard-boiled eggs. Based on Imee Marcos, the food was
said to may have been spoiled.
 The fourth report that I am presenting you is the 27 kids that have died
and 100 others that are sickened after eating a snack of cassava which
is said to have been poisonous if prepared incorrectly. With the nearest
hospital 20 miles away from San Jose school, in Bohol island's Mabini
town, some victims died while being carried in a variety of vehicles,
including three-wheel motorcycle taxis. Francisca Doliente said her 9-
year-old niece, Arve Tamor, was given some of the deep-fried
caramelized cassava by a classmate who bought it from a vendor outside
the school. The 68 years old woman who prepared the snack was also
bought to the hospitals. The authorities wants to ask about the case but
the woman was constantly complaining from pain.
 The last case is about the poisoned candy that sickened nearly 2,000
people in the Philippines. At least 1,925 people, most of them children,
have fallen ill in the Philippines after eating candies said to be
intentionally poisoned, according to numerous reports. At least 66 people
are currently hospitalized. Scores of children have experienced diarrhea,
stomach cramps, and vomiting after eating the fruit-flavored candies,
which were reportedly sold by vendors outside of schools. The candies
were produced by Wendy’s Delicious Durian Candy. The company owner
has been taken into custody as part of the investigation, and police have
Cedrick N. Capobres 11(Confucius)
arrested nine vendors who sold the poisoned treats. In some cases, the
candies seem to have been “repackaged” by vendors after being
produced by the company. Authorities are investigating whether or not
this repackaging has any connection to the illnesses. According to health
officials, the candies lack any expiration dates or nutritional facts on the
labeling. Numerous foodborne illness outbreaks in the Philippines have
been blamed on poor food safety standards and lack of enforcement. The
illnesses have all occurred in Mindanao, the country’s southern-most
large island. Candies associated with the illnesses came in mango,
durian, and mangosteen flavors.

2. What are the common food poisoning in Southeast Asia.

 The common causes of food poisoning in the Southeast Asia region are from the
eaten food contaminated with harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites, harmful toxins and
chemically flavored foods. Another is from spoiled ones and the fruits that are needed
to be prepared correctly otherwise it leads to death.

3. If a customer complaints of food poisoning or contamination, how do you handle the situation .
 If I’m in a situation where a customer is complaining about the dishes that I myself
have prepared to have been poisoned, first thing to do is tobring them to the nearest
hospital. If what they are claiming may be true then they have to be bought
immediately to avoid fatalities. Then investigate, obviously if they are claiming that the
food has been poisoned or spoiled there must be more and more people to complain
or maybe even experience the symptoms already. Then investigate the said food
myself. Check if what they are claiming may be true or not. Then you leave the rest to
the authorities. Since I would not intentionally harm anyone, then I have to be able to
defend myself and my crew once the questioning starts. Gathering proofs and
evidences helps a lot.

4. Why do culinary students wear their laboratory attire (chefs jacket, pants and shoes) upon entering
the kitchen or the food preparation area and must not wear in public place or street cloths .
 These attires are basically a PPE that is used in the Kitchen. It is important to
wear this to avoid contaminating or spoiling the food that will be served to people
to avoid any case of food poisoning.

5. Why are the chef's jacket double breasted? What is the importance of the design?
 The chef’s double breasted jacket is designed to keep the chef safe. It is made of a
high quality, double thick cotton and is usually fire resistant. So the chefs are safe
from burns when they are wearing the chef’s coat.
