1. The daily profit for the garden department of a store from the sale of trees is given by
𝑃(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 − 18𝑥 + 225 , where x is the number of trees sold,
2. (a) Solve the Equations: (i) log 4 (𝑥 − 8) + log 4 (𝑥 − 8) = 1 and (ii) 2𝑥 × 22𝑥−1 = 64 [6 marks]
(b) Initially, three are 50 milligrams of a radioactive substance. The substance decays
according to the equation 𝑁 = 50( ℯ −0.01𝑡 ),where N is the number of milligrams
present after t hours. The number of hours it takes for 20 milligrams to remain is? [6 marks]
(c) Suppose $600,000 is invested at 6.5% compounded quarterly,
(i) Find the value of the investment after 7 years. [6 marks]
(ii)Find the value of the interest which was earned over the first 7 years. [2 marks]
3. In order to ensure optimal health (and thus accurate test results), a lab technician needs to feed the
rabbits a daily diet containing a minimum of 24 grams (g) of fat, 36 g of carbohydrates, and 4 g of
protien. But the rabbits should be fed no more than five ounces of food a day. Rather than order rabbit
food that is custom-blended, it is cheaper to order Food X and Food Y, and blend them for an optimal
mix. Food X contains 8 g of fat, 12 g of carbohydrates, and 2 g of protein per ounce, and costs $0.20 per
ounce. Food Y contains 12 g of fat, 12 g of carbohydrates, and 1 g of protein per ounce, at a cost of
$0.30 per ounce.
a. What is the optimal blend? [ 20 marks]

(b) A technician charges $1,000 for the first hour of work at your house and $500 for every hour
(or fraction thereof) afterwards. From the information given derive a case defined function,
c(x) which you can use to compute the cost for hiring the technician for up to 4 hours.
Use the function formed to determine and interpret lim c( x) . [8 marks]

(c) Briefly describe giving suitable examples how piecewise or case defined functions are utilized in
everyday life to provide value to the customer or enhance the producer’s offerings.
[4 marks]
5. (a) Suppose the supply and demand equations for a manufacturer's product are
1 1
𝑃= 𝑞 + 20 and 𝑃 = 200 − 2 𝑞 respectively, where q represents number of
10
units and p represents price per unit in dollars,
(i) Determine the equilibrium price and the equilibrium quantity. [ 8 marks]
(ii) If a tax of $1.00 per unit is imposed on the manufacturer, describe what you
would expect to happen to the equilibrium price and quantity. [2 marks]
(b) When the temperature T (in degrees Celsius) of a certain laboratory animal is reduced, its heart rate r
(in beats per minute) decreases. At a temperature of 37°C, the animal had a heart rate of 200, and at a
temperature of 32°C its heart rate was 140. If r is a linear function of T for 26 ≤ T ≤ 38,
i.Use a graph to show the linear relationship between the temperature T (in degrees Celsius) and heart
rate r (in beats per minute) for interval [26 ≤ T ≤ 38]. [5 marks]
ii.Find and interpret the slope [2 marks]
iii. Determine the equation of the line [2 marks]
iv. Determine the heart rate at a temperature of 30°C. [1 marks]
