DESCRIPTION
The BJ ParaBow cementing tool is used to place cement plugs with accuracy in open or
cased holes. It utilizes umbrella shaped membranes that conform to hole irregularities to
stop the movement of heavier cements through lighter fluids.
The ParaBow Extrusion Tool is used to run and deploy the ParaBow Refill.
The ParaBow Refill consist of two umbrella shapes mounted head to head that extend in
opposite directions in the wellbore to form a temporary plug. The ParaBow Refill is made
of two canvas bags mounted inside of fiberglass rods.
The BJ ParaBow Extrusion Tool is made up at the end of work string and ran to the setting
depth. An extrusion device is dropped in the work string and circulated to the ball seat.
Pressure is then applied to shift the activator piston and close the upper circulation ports.
An increase in the pressure extrudes a rubber ball or shifts the ball seat (depending on the
tool type), allowing the fluid to be pumped against the extrusion piston, extruding the
ParaBow Refill. After deploying, the ParaBow Refill will keep the cement slurry separated
from the fluid below and avoid fluid movements in this area. A series of accessories and
extrusion devices are available for use with different ParaBow Extrusion Tool versions.
FEATURES
• One connection hook-up.
• Simple and reliable construction.
• Simple one trip hydraulic operation.
• The ParaBow Refill is drillable with PDC, hybrid and rock bits.
BENEFITS
• Dramatically improves the odds of placing the cement plug at the desired location
• Less waiting on cement time.
• Reduces mud-conditioning time.
There are two ParaBow Extrusion Tool versions in use at this time:
1. Early US ParaBow Extrusion Tool
2. ParaBow Extrusion Tool with Dart and Ball System (DB).
Due to advantages it offers, the DB Tool system supersedes the other version.
The main difference between the two versions is the actuating device used to extrude the refill:
• The Early US ParaBow Extrusion Tool uses rubber balls or darts to deploy the refill.
• The DB ParaBow Extrusion Tool uses phenolic balls, steel balls or darts to deploy the refill.
RUNNING PRECAUTIONS
1. When making up to the workstring, do not place back-ups on the upper or lower housing and do not grip the
top sub on upper circulation ports.
2. Break circulation gently and circulate approximately 20 bbls volume every 20-50 stands, depending on mud
cleanliness at maximum rate of 5 BPM. Do not exceed this circulation rate; the refill can extrude
prematurely.
3. In open holes or deviated wells circulate continuously at 2-3 BPM while running in.
4. Once the tool is at the setting depth you can circulate to condition the hole. If a circulation rate higher than
5 BBM is required, it is best to extrude the refill first and then pull up 10 feet to circulate.
RUNNING PROCEDURE
5. Remove tape from upper and lower circulation ports. Check the actuator ball size. If a ball is dropped in the
tool for this purpose, make sure it is taken out before making up the tool to the work string.
1. Make up the ParaBow Extrusion Tool Top Sub (1) to the work string.
2. Run into the hole. Please refer to Running Precautions #2 and #3.
3. Extrude Parabow. Depending on the extrusion device used to deploy the refill, use one of the next
procedures.
D) Using Dart
(1) Drop activating dart and pump at 5 BPM max to move dart through tubing.
(2) As the dart approaches the extrusion tool, slow the pumps to 3 BPM max.
(3) Once the darts latches in the ball seat apply 265 psi. pressure to the tubing to shift the activator
piston and close the upper circulation ports.
(4) Apply 1550 psi. pressure to the tubing to shift the ball seat.
(5) Apply 2900 psi pressure to the tubing to shear out the dart nose guide. The extrusion piston will
move down extruding the refill into the well bore.
4. When the extrusion piston has traveled the full length of the tool, the lower circulating ports open and the
original circulating pressure will return. At this point slowly pick the string up 10 ft. This will pull the
release wire attached to the tool, allowing the lower portion of the refill to expand to its fully opened
position.
5. Pump the required volume of cement slurry
6. Retrieve, clean and oil the ParaBow Extrusion Tool.
MATERIALS
All load-bearing components are made of P110 equivalent steel.
All standard elastomers are nitrile.
