II. Discussion

Softball
It is a ball game that is played between two teams
consisting of nine on a field with four bases. It like baseball
but played only in a smaller area and uses a larger ball than
the baseball.
The earliest known softball game was played in
Chicago, Illinois on Thanksgiving Day, 1887. It took place
at the Farragut Boat Club at a gathering to hear the outcome
of the Yale University and Harvard University football game.
When the score was announced and bets were settled, a
Yale alumnus threw a boxing glove at a Harvard supporter. The other person grabbed a
stick and swung at it.

George Hancock called out "Play ball!" and the game

began, with the boxing glove tightened into a ball, a broom handle
serving as a bat. He is credited as the game's inventor for his
development of a ball and an undersized bat in the next week.

Basic skills in Softball

A. Throwing is the most basic skill in softball. It is an act of passing the ball to a
teammate. You need to focus on your target before you execute the l throw.
Two types of throwing are:
 Underhand throwing
 Overhead throwing
B. Pitching is a skill that puts the game to play. It is performed by a pitcher who
stays at the center of the playing field. You need to focus your pitch on your
target before you execute the pitch.
C. Catching is a defensive skill used to receive a thrown ball and hold a base
runner or batter from proceeding or preventing them from earning a point or a
run. This is a very important skill you need to master because it allows you to
advance from one base to the other with full speed and agility safely.
D. Batting is the act of hitting the ball by swinging the arms backward and hitting
the incoming ball by swinging it again towards the area of the ball origin.
Different Players’ position in Softball
There are nine players out on the field at one time in fast-pitch softball and 10
players in slow-pitch softball.
 Pitcher - The pitcher is the individual who throws the ball from the middle of
the playing area.
 Catcher - normally behind home plate in a squatted position. The one who
controls the pitcher throw. The catcher and the pitcher are the leaders of the
game.
 First baseman - The first baseman is the position to the right side of the
playing area when facing the field. The major role of the first baseman is to
receive throws from other defensive players to get a force play at first base.
 Second baseman - The second baseman plays in between the first baseman
and the gap at second.
 Third baseman - The third baseman is the position on the left side of the
playing area when you are looking at the field.
 Shortstop - The shortstop fields all balls hit to the infield between the second
and third bases.
 Outfielders - The outfielders are players that cover the grassy area behind the
infield. Outfielders are named for their positions in the field relative to home
plate.
