ADVANCED DIPLOMA IN
GENRAL DUTY
ASSISTANT
The General Duty Assistant (GDA) course trains
students to work as nursing aides in hospitals,
nursing homes and home care scenarios. As part
of the curriculum, students learn how to provide
basic nursing care and manage ill patients. The
course involves 3 years of classroom training
followed by on-job training. A GDA works in
close collaboration with doctors, nurses and other
healthcare providers. The nursing assistant
course lays special emphasis on inculcating
empathetic and ethical behavior beyond patient
care. Some of the key responsibilities of the
General Duty Assistant are to provide daily care,
look after the patient’s comfort, safety and health
needs. The training programme is mandatory that
the candidate must fulfill the entry criteria
provided for the job profile. The training and
assessment will certify that the candidate is able
to undertake specific set of activities. This must

not be equated with the formal qualifications-
diploma which is given. The courses are the
training content developed for enhancing the
specific skills of existing professionals or provide

The General Duty Assistant (GDA) program is a
short duration skill based training program, with
an objective to develop a pool of trained
workforce which can be employed by hospitals
and healthcare facilities to provide support to
nurses, doctors as well as other healthcare team
members in ensuring quality care to the patients.
This program focuses on the acquisition of skills
necessary to provide support by undertaking non-
clinical tasks or the activities that have been
directed by the healthcare team members.

PROFESSIONAL:
General Duty Assistants (GDAs) GDAs usually
work in a hospital environment but may work at
homes of sick patients and may be called by
similar names such as Orderlies, Nursing
Assistants, Nursing Aides or Bedside Assistants.
Internationally, they are usually called Nursing
Assistants or Patient Care Assistants.
They work in collaboration with (and usually
under the supervision of) doctors, nurses, and
other healthcare providers to deliver the
prescribed healthcare services to their patients.
As they deal with patients, essential qualities
include an orientation to service, empathy, basic
communication skills and the ability to follow
orders and behave ethically. In General Duty
Assistant (GDA) Course, The trainee will be
providing patient care and facilitates training that
maintains an appropriate environment. The key
responsibilities of the General Duty Assistant
(GDA) are to provide the daily care of the
patients, patient health, and safety.
This course needs the individual to figure out
together with Doctors and Nurses and different

Agency(NSDCA) competency exam. After
clearing this exam, students become certified
General Duty Assistants and thus work in an
efficient and knowledgeable manner.
