Haris

Gypsum
Gypsum is sedimentary rock and can be found in the form of crystals
as well as masses called Gypsum rock. It is often mixed with clay,
sand, organic matter.
Uses

 It can be used as a fertilizer to reduce aluminum toxicity

 It is used as a retarder in Portland cement
 It is used for decorative purposes in making statues
 It is used in the manufacturing process of Plaster of paris

Occurrence
Major Gypsum deposits occur in the tribal areas of Dera Ghazi Khan
District. The deposits occur in the north-south trending ridges that
form the foothills of the Suleman Range, West of Dera Ghazi Khan.
The deposits of gypsum also occur in the Salt Range in District of
Jhelum, Chakwal, Khushab and Mianwali.

Rock Salt (Halite)

Rock Salt or otherwise known as Halite is a sedimentary rock It is
found as a crystalline structure. Crystals are cubic in shape or are in
combination with octahedrons.

Uses
 Salt is used in daily food items
 It is used in meat and fish packaging
 Rock Salt is used in the manufacturing process of Sodium
 It is used in the refining of ores and metals

Occurrence
Rock Salt is being extensively mined at the Khewra Salt Mine in
Khewra, Jhelum District, Punjab. Besides Rock Salt, Lake Salt is also
being recovered under the process of solar evaporation from various
salt lakes in District Rahim Yar Khan.

Bauxite
Bauxite is sedimentary rock and is the principal commercial source of
aluminum.

Uses
 The mineral is used as a raw material in the manufacturing of
alumina/aluminum metal
 It is used in the chemical industry
 Bauxite is used as a raw material in buildings and road
aggregates

Occurrence
Some Bauxite derived from basaltic rocks contains large amount of
Titania. The Bauxite is best developed from Nilawahn to Khura in the
south of Salt Range. In general, the content of alumina and silica has
inverse relationship from east to west. Sedimentary rocks near Ziarat
& Pir Sultan Mehdi in District Khushab are embedded with workable
deposits of high-quality Bauxite.
