STUDY NA PIYAWA!!!
Study effectively – you can learn more and retain more in less
time!!
Less time studying, better grades and more time to do things you
enjoy
STUDY HACKS
1. Active vs Passive Learning
- Passive Learning – easy, less effort, more comfortable
- Active Learning – more challenging, less comfortable, and more effective
ACTIVE LEARNING:
1ST step: Identify what is important more!! Not all information is created equal. Sorting information
and assessing its relative importance.
2nd step: Organize the information the way you understand. Use in your own words, diagrams or
other study aids! Indi lang gid pag kapihon kag ibutang sa notebook!!! Ma inchindihan pagid mismo
sang mayo!
2. Environment:
- Location
- Group Study or Solo?
- Routine Stimuli or Maintaining a Routine
Novel Stimuli – study location demonstrated to improve recall and retention. (Not working
for benefits of routine) Studying in new location? Not will work
Maintaning a Routine –Study anay tas tulog timprano and wake again early. May facilitate
productivity and procrastination. Study only at room!
- Timing: POMODORO TECHNIQUE!
Writing is the best!!! Writing much slower and therefore you emphasize what is important
information and rephrase and organize it on your own words! Improve RECALL because of increase
motor coordination required for writing.
- Textbooks – Wala pulos ang I highlight mo textbooks then read several times to study but a
TERRIBLE PASSIVE WAY TO STUDY. Reviewing powerpoint slides or documents enk
wrong man.
What to do?
Make the process active as you can even at the time of initial exposure
Using notepad or computer, SUMMARIZE what you read at your own words.
Doing so, identifying important infos and organizing in a way you will understand. This will
drastically improve recall during test time.
STEP 2: Divide the notes with 2 parts. One for the questions and for answers
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-revising the question and highlighting red the question one can't remember.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Practice questions -> ask past students or professors where to find practice questions/tests.
2. Flashcards -> prevents from peeking and keeps you alert because you never know what topic will
come on the next flashcard.
3. Using toggles on note-taking apps -> helpful to hide answers (but, using flashcards is a better form
of studying because you never know the next topic coming up on the next flashcard).
4. Elaboration (teaching or explaining) -> you can teach the topic to yourself or a friend/stuffed
animal. This forces you to put the topic into your own ideas and words.
5. Feynman technique -> use simple words and always ask yourself why. Eg. Medication helps me
sleep better. Why? Because..... Why? Because.... Keep asking why. This helps you break down the
topic into its most simple form to understand the base of the question/topic.
- Don’t multitask – Batching – Group all the tasks and taking a break
6. Quiz yourself at all times. Quizzing yourself before learning the material, such as coming up with
questions and answering them on past knowledge, will help with the hypercorrection effect -> you
will more likely remember the right answer because you made the error with high confidence.
SUMMARY:
Before learning/lecture -> use pre-tests to develop questions and develop the hypercorrection effect
