Basic Statement of Understanding

for
Institute for Science and Mathematics

The Institute for Science and Mathematics (ISM) is a challenging program for grades [9-12]. The ISM is a
specialized program supporting and emphasizing the study of mathematics, science, and technology.

Students are expected to have completed by the end of each year:

Freshmen Year Requirements


• 1 math credit
• 1 science credit
• Minimum of 5 credits toward graduation
• Current Perspective Hours
• Student Orientation/Student Meeting
• Service Learning Project -10 hours related to math, science, or technology reflecting service
and personal growth (learning).
• Two Math/Science Speaker Series, Career Fairs, etc.

Sophomore Year Requirements


• 1 math credit
• 1 science credit
• Minimum of 10 credits toward graduation
• Current Perspective Hours
• Student meetings
• Service Learning Project -10 hours related to math, science, or technology reflecting service
and personal growth (learning).
• One Job Shadow in Math/Science/Technology (minimum of 4 hours)
• One Career Fair or Math/Science Speaker Series
• One Résumé

Junior Year Requirements


• 1 math credit
• 1 science credit
• Minimum of 16 credits toward graduation
• Current Perspective Hours
• Student Meetings
• Internship in Math and/or Science (minimum of 40 hours)
• One Math and Science College Tour
• PSAT – Must be completed before start of senior year

Senior Year Requirements


• 1 additional math or science credit
• “C” average or better for your high school career in your math and science courses
• Standard Diploma Criteria
• Earn 24 credits toward graduation
• Current Perspectives Activities

• Senior Project

All students participating in the Institute for Science and Mathematics (ISM) are required to sign this
Statement of Understanding.

By signing below, we agree that we have read and understand the above requirements and make a specific
commitment to remain in the program for our high school career. We understand that at the end of each
year, if we are not in compliance with the above requirements, our status in the Institute for Science and
Mathematics will be in jeopardy.
