Allow this parable of pencil to encourage you to know that
you are a special person, and only you can fulfill the purpose
to which you were born to accomplish. Never allow yourself
to get discouraged and think that your life is insignificant
and cannot make a change.

You are stronger than you think!

HARDNESS BLACKNESS
The number on the pencil is important
especially when we draw and sketch. This

FINE POINT
will help us to achieve the proper shading
to make our drawing look realistic or to
achieve 3- dimensional effect.
Chiaroscuro

from Italian chiaro, “light,” and scuro,

“dark” it is a technique employed in the
visual art to represent light and shadow
as they define three- dimensional objects.

By using chiaroscuro technique, we can able to identify where the light is

coming from to determine where to place the shadow of the object and
to maintain the transition of light as we do the shade.
SHADING TECHNIQUES
Shading
HATCHING
Hatching

Creating dark value

(shades) by application of
parallel lines. The closer
together the lines the more
even the resulting shade.

Draw strokes in the same direction and layer them to produce darker shades.
CROSSHATCHING
Crosshatching

Creating shades through a series of intersecting lines. The intersecting

lines crisscross each other at various angles. The lines can be straight,
scribbled or circular.
STIPPLING
Pointilism
Creating shades through a series of
dots. Building up more dots closer
together results in darker shading.
BLENDING
Blending

Creating shades by “smudging” the

applied shade. This is done by
pressing and spreading the applied
graphite with your finger, a soft
cloth or a “stump”.
SCRIBBLING
Scumbling

a technique that is done quickly or with marks randomly
