‘Cave Arts to human language; evolution of human communication’

Communication is very important to understand people. Through the years,
communication has evolved and the way people communicate with each other today is

4
entirely different from the prehistoric era. In the past, communicating was limited to
interpersonal interactions – person to person. Then, it gradually evolved into signs,
symbols, then to letters and words, and later to telephone. At present, the Internet era
has paved the way to multiple means of communication. Technology has indeed
redefined communication. People no longer have to wait for years, months, weeks, and
days to receive information or messages. Today, texts, e-mails, tweets, and personal
messages can reach the recipient in just a matter of seconds.

However, the oldest form of symbols used for communication was cave paintings.
According to theorists, cave paintings were created to mark a territory or to record
events. The oldest cave painting discovered inside “Chauvet Cave” in France is
believed to be made around 30,000 B.C. Other earliest cave paintings were found in
South Sulawesi, Indonesia and Coliboaia Cave in Romania.

In fact, it is evident that human communication has evolved for centuries from cave arts
to pictographs, pictographs to words and later to complex languages. According to
language specialists, most languages evolve with time, but some languages may die.
