Educational Qualifications: Bachelors Degree (in any field) or above.

Overall Work Experience: Minimum 5 years and maximum 15 years.

According to a report by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), about 40% of

employees around the world will work from home (WFH) by 2025. As

regards the Asia-Pacific region (Australia, Singapore, India) about 45% of

employees will permanently work from home, which is clearly above the

global number. Having said, as with everything, there are always

advantages and challenges (not necessarily disadvantages) working

from home, and you may want to consider them objectively before

making your own conclusions.

The Positives
No Commute: The first and foremost advantage with WFH is the

absence of a daily commute. Many studies show that a vast majority

of people don’t enjoy their daily commute to their office. Working

remote means you can avoid a lengthy commute to your office by car,

2-wheeler, train, or bus; which enables you to start your workday much

earlier and in a calm and fresh manner.

Flexibility: Working from home puts you in charge of your own schedule,

which means someone else doesn’t control your day from somewhere.

The flexibility in schedule puts you also on control of when and how you

invest your time for your family life. As long as you meet the deadlines,

you would have the freedom to take the kids to school, attend school

functions, be present at parent-teacher’s meetings, help your spouse

with errands or even get your monthly grocery shopping done on a week

day during non-peak hours.

Improved Productivity: Reports indicate that employees feel they enjoy

a greater sense of freedom when they are working from home. This in

turn resulted in increased motivation and productivity, as, relatively

speaking; there are fewer interruptions at home than in office. Working

in an atmosphere that’s in your control can mean that you get more

done without getting distracted.

Save Money: Working from home or a remote location,

means you save significant money on transportation,

eating lunch out, snacking in the evening with

do video conferencing on a daily basis, you can wear

semi-formal or informal clothes and no longer need to

set aside a regular budget for formal wear.

Proximity to Family: The convenience of being home and

the physical proximity to loved ones are absolutely

comforting. For young parents especially, it can be

tremendously satisfying to know that they are just a few

steps away from their children and are available the

moment they need them. This equally applies in case

elderly parents too are staying together. The benefits in the

growth and development of children living with their

grandparents can be priceless, to say the least!

Better Health: Thanks to the absence of morning

commute, working from home gives you more time to

incorporate physical exercise/routine into your day.

Whether you walk long distances, do yoga or workout at

the gym, you have more energy, are more alert, can

concentrate better and therefore get things done more

efficiently. By working from home, you can aspire for not

just good health but better health, whose rewards you can

reap in the long run.

Eco-Friendly: If you’re a green warrior, this advantage

should make you feel excited for sure. Elimination of

commute means less air pollution, which in turn means

you are doing your bit every day to protect the planet.

Small drops, as they say, make an ocean. In those lines,

research found that nitrogen dioxide levels on London’s

roads decreased by about 30% during the first UK lockdown

in 2020.

Save Time & Transform Life

The greatest reward working from home (WFH) is the quantity of time you save

because of the absence of commute to and back from the office. Research shows

that on average, an individual spends not less than 45 minutes on one way commute,

which adds up to 90 minutes per day. Of course, there are many instances where it

can be relatively lower or far higher.

Let’s say you’re currently working from home but used to spend 2 hours per day on

commute before (2020). If you’ve been working 5 days a week, that’s 22 days of

commute a month and a total savings of 44 hours per month. That translates to

around 500 hours saved per year!

With discipline and planning, with those 500 hours, you can even complete a post-

graduate degree online in 2 years or even less. As regards short job-oriented certificate

programs specializing in a particular field of work, the scope you have to utilize those

saved hours are limitless, to say the least.

Using those hours to constantly re-skill and/or up-skill yourself and prepare yourself for

the ever-changing landscape in the world of work will always keep you in good stead

and makes you a highly sought-after professional in your chosen field.

Just look at the options you have with the time saved working from home every day:

1. You can invest your time with your family and larger family.

2. If you are a young parent, you can invest your precious time just playing with or

helping your child/children learn new things every single day.

3. You can choose to take up the guitar/drums classes which you always wanted to in

school but somehow didn’t or couldn’t.

4. You could catch up with that pet project you and your spouse dropped midway.

5. You and your kids could just chill having fun with your pet.

6. Last but never least, you can invest that saved time to constantly upgrade yourself

The Challenges
Distractions: While working from home has great potential to boost productivity, there’s no

denying the fact that there can be many distractions on a regular basis every day. Noisy

neighbors, noisy activities in the neighborhood, and noise from traffic are some of the

distractions other than the distractions from members of the family, especially kids.

Lack of self-discipline: While everyone knows that one shouldn’t succumb to distractions, it

takes a lot of discipline to WFH in spite of constant distractions. Losing focus and

motivation could lead to skipping regular daily official tasks, which in turn results in failed

deadlines. It is important, therefore, to be conscious about how you’re using your time and

whether you’re using it as planned – with discipline.

Work-Life Balance: Most people believe that working from home would allow them to

experience a better work-life balance. While this can be true, without adequate self-control,

it becomes a huge challenge. That’s not all. When you don’t make a clear separation of

your workplace and living space, the lines can get blurred. Switching-off from work

becomes difficult and you find yourself checking your smartphone and emails constantly

almost the entire day. The importance of discipline and self-control can’t be emphasized

enough here.

Absence of Workplace Gatherings: While technology enables you to easily interact with co-

workers and clients, it is never the same as in-person meetings and discussions,

lunching/snacking together or just regular everyday banter. It’s easy for remote workers to

feel isolated as they miss out on workplace fun, which can affect their morale, motivation,

and energy levels.

While there are real and clear challenges working from home, the advantages far

outweigh the challenges – for better. Working from home is the new norm of the 21st

century, especially from the year 2021. What is important to note is that WFH was already

prevalent across the world, especially from the mid-90s. Now that the world has entered

an era of the new-normal of WFH, it is important that one learns to adapt to it, embrace it,

and be in tune with the trends with the world of work.

You and your life are no longer confined by a clock or a physical location anymore. You can

work at any time of day and from almost anywhere you please. The typical 9-5 working

day is gone. Long gone. And welcome to the new norm!
