eBay is basically an American multinational e-commerce corporation which is based in San Jose,
California, that facilitates consumer-to-consumer and business-to-consumer sales through its website. It
was founded by Pierre Omidyar in 1995, and became a huge success website in no time.

Interesting thing about eBay is that it doesn’t actually sell items itself but actually allows users to bid
auctions upon the items they desire to sell.

Data cycle: Following are the 5 steps involved in data science lifecycle that will be implemented upon
the business of eBay.

 Real world: eBay is a global commerce website that connects millions of people online( buyers
and sellers). The website itself doesn’t sell any items but allows the users to bid auctions upon
the item they desire to sell/buy. This is the reason they have uploaded the page ‘My world’
where anyone can basically show his presence by simply representing his profile with the items
he want people to catch eye on. Apart from that eBay also has a page green.Ebay.com where
they want people to realize that buying items second hand is environmentally correct as
recycling.

 Raw data: As mentioned above eBay totally operates upon the function of the user so it collects
the personal data of the user when one is using their services. When a person creates account
on eBay he has to give the data required by the company in order to utilize their services. The
reason for collecting big data is for a number of functions, such as gauging the site’s
performance and for fraud detection But one of the more interesting wayss the company
makes use of the plethora of data it collects is by using the information to make users buy more
goods on the site.In this manner the company is aware of all the transactions that a user will be
taking.
  Process and analyze: In the casee of eBay, the company will be using big data and machine
learning solutions to address use cases such as personalization, merchandising and A/B testing
for new features to improve the user’s experience.such as deal discovery, uses machine
learning to find patterns in structured data.eBay also uses their management information
systems to reach new territories, expand their online community and enable trade on a local,
national and international basis with customized sites in markets around the world. This is how
they will be process and analyse the data they’ll collect.

 Meaningful data: After the analysis of the raw data, it must be arranged in a manner that it can
be understood easily and should be user-friendly. Data that identifies you, such as your name,
address, telephone numbers, email addresses, your user name or your tax identification
number that you provide when setting up your eBay account or at a later date will be arranged
in a helpful style which would show the company’s efforts towards being user-friendly.Not only
that, Ebay will also use big data to make predictions on whether a listed item will sell and how
much it will sell for, which affects how high an item ranks on the auction site’s search engine. All
of this can increase the likelihood of a user making a purchase. This will actually indicate us
towards the market segmentation as well as trends.
