Tools used in riveting:
1. Drill press
2. Drill bits
3. Drilling machine work grip
4. Drill vice
5. Rivet snap
6. Ball peen hammer
Solid Rivets : One of the oldest and most reliable type
of fasteners.

• solid rivets can be found or made in different

materials like: aluminum alloy, titanium or nickel
based alloys.

• Solid shank rivet – structural aircraft.

Book Title. P52

Slipstream: Turbulent flow:
• Solid steel rivets
Building frames

Static structures:
cranes

bridges
Processing Solid Rivets:

• Precipitation hardening- elasticity

behavior.
• Ice box – sub-freezing the temperature.
• Solid rivet can be also driven by
hydraulically, pneumatically, or
electromagnetically.
Installation of solid rivets:
1. Plan the project.

2. Align panels.

3. Planning hole locations.

4. Hole location layout.

5. Clamping panels.
6. Drill riv et holes.

7. Placing riv ets into holes.

8. Driv ing holes.

9. Repeat the process.

10. Checking your works.

Solid Riveting is used in:

Mediev al armor, jewelry, and metal couture
Blind rivets : Ideal for project where access to
the joint is limited. Also known as pop rivets.

Has two parts: 1.) rivet body (shell

or hat). 2.) mandrel (stem)
Types of blind rivets:
• Standard- most common type of blind rivets.
• Sealed- complete enclosed and water tight.
• Multi-grip- require rivets in multiple sizes.
• Interlock- has a built-in (internal) locking mechanism.

standard sealed Multi-grip interlock

Blind or Pop Rivets different head styles:
Installing a blind rivet:

1. Drill a hole into the materials.

2. Choose a place the riv et into the two
materials.
3. Place the Riv et Installation Tool on the
mandrel of the riv et.
4. Activate the tool.
Common application of blind rivets:
• Pop rivets can be used anywhere if they are properly installed .
• Aircrafts, machinery, structural beams, and battleships, submarine, and
etc.

Blind rivets in aircraft Blind rivets in machinery

Blind rivets in structural beams Blind rivets in submarine

Shoulder rivets: Shoulder rivet features a shoulder
located under its head.

Shoulder riv ets are used for applications inv olving hinging or
pivoting.

.
HINGING AND POVITING
● Hinge joint

● Pivot point
How to set shoulder rivets:
1. Drill a hole.
2. Use riveting gun or air
hammer.
3. Repeat process.
4. Check fit.

INSTALLATION BENEFITS OF SHOULDER RIVETS:

● PROVIDES HIGH JOINT STRENGTH .
● PERMITING ROTATION OF THE RIVETED WORK-PIECE.
● ACT AS A BEARING SURFACE .
USED OF SHOULDER RIVETS:

Bed frames
furniture

Recliner chair
Tubular rivets: contain a hole at the end of
riv et opposite the head.

Types of tubular rivets:

• compression
• Semi-tubular compression Semi-tubular
• Full tubular

Full tubular
Compression tubular rivet:
• interference fit.

Semi tubular rivet:

• These tubular rivet has a hole in
the field end.

Full tubular rivet:

• Has deeper hole.
How to set tubular rivets:
using a rivet gun:
1. Hold rivet gun against the rivet.
2. Use the bucking bar against the tail.
3. Use the rivet gun to install the rivet.
4. Inspect the rivet that has been installed in place.

using a hand/hammer:
1. Position the rivet in a rivet set.
2. Hammer the rivet.
3. Inspect the rivet.
Drive rivets : It is a type of blind rivet with a short
mandrel that protrudes from the head.

Widely used in:

construction work, tapestries, signal posts.
Inserting drive rivets in Use a hammer:
holes:

Benefits in using drive rivets:

1. Single-side access.
2. Does not deform surfaces.
3. Creates wide bearing area.
4. Good for v ibrations
5. Resistant to corrosion.
Installation process of drive rivet:
• Using hammer
1. Place the sign.

2. mounting holes.

3. hit the drive rivet.

Split rivets: Ideal for piercing
through soft materials. Woods: Plastics:

Leather:
“ two leg”

Split riv ets can be found in a v ariety of materials, including brass-

and nickel-plated steel, nylon and plastic.

nylon Brass plated Nickel plated plastic

Installation of split rivets:
1. Take the split rivet.
2. Place a washer.
3. Take the riveting tool.
4. Take a metal hammer.
Split rivets used in:

Leather goods Clothing

luggage

TYPES OF RIVET JOINTS

• Single Rivet Lap Joint

• Double Rivet Lap Joint
• Single – Strap Butt Joint
• Double Strap Butt Joint
TYPES OF LAP JOINT
▪ Single Rivet Lap Joint : a single row of rivets.

▪ Double Rivet Lap Joint : A lap joint with two rows of rivets.
TYPES OF BUTT JOINT
▪ Single- Strap Butt Joint : only one cover plate used.

▪ Double Strap Butt Joint : cover plates are used both side of the work piece.
Double, Triple or Quadruple Riveted : In which case the chain or zig-
zag formation may be employed.
Single riveted lap joint Single riveted, single strap butt joint

Double riveted chain lap joint Double riveted zigzag lap joint
Single riveted double strap butt joint

Important terms: Back pitch
a. pitch – distance between
two centers.
b. Back pitch – shortest
distance.
pitch Diagonal pitch
c. Diagonal pitch –
distance between the
centers.
d. Margin or
marginal pitch –
nearest edge of the
plate.
margin
APPLICATION
▪ Riveting is widely used in condition
where light weight and high strength
are critical such as;

✓ In aircraft
✓ In tower, type buildings
✓ In hull of ships,
✓ In train engine bodies
APPLICATION
▪ Rivets are used in small scale conditions also based on the same principle.
▪ In jean’s pockets
▪ In buckets
▪ In door handles

In all the above cases strength is of utmost importance while keeping the material part
lightweight which has been achieved by the application of rivets.
