Background: Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Livestock Systems

The vision of the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Livestock Systems is to sustainably intensify smallholder
livestock systems in order to improve human nutrition, health, and incomes. Initiated in October 2015, the
program is now well established in its core target countries, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nepal and
Cambodia. The competitively selected Reach and Focus projects based on priorities developed in a participatory
manner are operational in the six core countries. An additional research project focusing on controlling Peste des
Petits Ruminants (PPR), a viral disease of small ruminants, has started in Uganda and Kenya. In November 2017,
the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation awarded the Livestock Systems Innovation Lab $8.7 million for research on
improving supply of quality livestock feed in Ethiopia and Burkina Faso and reducing environmental enteric
dysfunction in Ethiopia. Recently initiated efforts focus on adding value to the ongoing research portfolio through
cross-project collaboration and strong emphasis on fostering scaling.
The first Annual General Meeting of the Livestock Systems Innovation Lab, at the University of Florida in
Gainesville, FL, in March 2017, introduced the Principal Investigators and projects from Ethiopia, Rwanda, and
Nepal to each other, and shared diverse areas of USAID project management. In this second Annual General
Meeting, focus will be on introducing new projects for Cambodia, Burkina Faso and Niger, reviewing results and
progress of the existing projects, and discussing how to add value to the project portfolio and foster scaling of
innovative technologies and approaches developed. Notably, the Global Nutrition Symposium that will be held on
January 24-25 will focus on improving the supply of quality livestock feeds, which was identified as the top
constraint to livestock productivity in all target countries.
