Construction labor productivity is a crucial measurement of productivity where there is a
relationship between the unit output of the labors with their work hours spent in the period of
the output progress. (Tammy, Medany, Ramli et al.,2019). In today’s society construction
laborers are mostly needed due to high demand of workforce to address the growth of
population and urbanization.

In many countries, the construction labor cost would account for between 30% and 50% of the
total cost of a construction project, so construction labor productivity as a determinant impacting
almost construction projects’ profitability (El-Gohary & Aziz, 2014; Hanna et al., 2002; Mctague
& Jergeas, 2002).

Productivity has been defined as the ratio of the outputs that are produced to the inputs
used to produce the outputs (Coelli et al., 2005). In the construction context, labor
productivity has been defined as the ratio between the units of work accomplished (i.e.,
outputs quantity) and the hours of work (i.e., inputs for labors) (Enshassi et al., 2007;
Ghoddousi & Hosseini, 2012).

Using the importance index technique, the top 10 factors were identified which
included: (1) personal growth/career improvement; (2) pay on time; (3) decision
making ability; (4) decent and respectful job; (5) rewards; (6) pay amount; (7)
high responsibility job; (8) challenging tasks; (9) work appreciation; and (10) team
cooperation. Semi-structured interviews were used to validate the results from
the questionnaire and to further understand the importance of worker motivation.

Besides, it is necessary to create recognition programs (i.e. rewards or punishment) to encourage
laborers to keep their discipline on site which also makes significant restriction accidents in the
construction project implementation.
