REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This part presents the foreign and local literature and studies

related to the impact of social media in the academic performance of

college students. It presents several ideas used to support the

current study.

Role of Social Media in 21st Century Education

Social media as time goes by creates a wide variety of changes

in terms of the daily lives of people. It continuously affecting the

way they interact with one another as well as how they

communicate. In addition, it influences not just the interaction of

media to put through with others, get news substance, share data,

and engage themselves. In addition, Ifinedo, (2016) youthful people

pervasively utilize social media for an assortment of reasons

counting excitement, personality arrangement, and social

improvement expanding offline social status through online intuition,

and keeping up interpersonal associations. Also, Hall, Kearney, et.

al., (2018) propose that social media can give people a stage that

that as it may, its impact on the well-being approach is rarely

considered. The author analyzes the complexity of clinicians' utilize

of social media to influence the arrangement and how the

arrangement and government bunches may use social media to

assist their claim goals. Moreover, Felix, Rauschanabel, et. al.,

(2017) Social media promotion is a necessary component of 21st-

century trade. In any case, the literature on social media marketing

remains divided and is centered on separated issues, such as

strategies for successful communication. The current research

applies a subjective, theory-building approach to create a vital

system that expresses four non-specific measurements of vital social

of vital social media marketing, this research proposes an integrative

system that extends past extant marketing theory. Additionally,

University of San Francisco, (2019) students can also share their

viewpoints, innovative ideas, or even doubts related to studies with

their classmates and professors in these groups. This will offer

assistance to students to effectively take part in such gather talks

and this, in turn, will offer assistance to progress their information.

Therefore, anyone can be the beneficiary of social media’s help

specifically the students. As well, Hagmann, (2018) paper

investigations the conceivable outcomes of social media as an

instrument for science communication within the set of data and

communication innovation (ICT) utilization in prehistoric studies.

Aside from examining the characteristics of advanced prehistoric

studies, the social networking sites (SNS) Twitter, sketch fab, and

spread instrument. As a result, above-average engagement rates

with few impressions were watched. Compared with that, status

exercises gain high numbers of impressions with below-average

engagement rates. It is accepted that most of the intelligence is

limited to a center gathering of people which a characterized social

media technique is mandatory for effective research information

dissemination in archaeology, combined with standard posts within

the SNS. Active adherents are of the most elevated significance.

Then, Alsaid Hassan, (2018) In Sudan as a developing nation, the

degree to which teachers can coordinate social media into

educational programs is restricted. There's no real practice of ICT

within the learning process, but use it as an extra use in the

educating process. Modern strategies must be moved forward to

coordinate that into the educational programs. By the theory of

Ugwulebo, Okoro, (2016) defines the impact of social media as “it

provides a very rich medium for information dissemination,

Furthermore, social media has something connections for an

where students could interact, socialize, and share their work

particularly their studies.

Thus, social media has a big impact on the daily lives of people

and also influences others in various ways. Social media has

exposure for the development of students learning process. This is a

part of a new literacy that’s why it can give a youth something

information that could be helpful, not only academically but

and can increase their learning experience.

According to the study of London College of International

Studies, (2019) we are seeing instruction educate adjusting these

improvements into their frameworks and depending on gather

assets and instruments to make strides the student life. The

utilization of social media in instruction gives students the capacity

to induce more valuable data, to associate with learning bunches

and other instructive frameworks that make instruction helpful.

Social arrange devices manage students and institutions with

different openings to move forward learning strategies. Through

these systems, you'll join social media plug-in that empowers

based on the overview of 360 students of a college in eastern India,

cognizing students’ discernment on social media and versatile

from a later academic consider affirming that legitimate utilization of

social media may advance an unused time of social learning, social

nearness, and an elective stage to cultivate online learning in

creating countries. The consider, “Responses to COVID-19 in higher

environment and open gathering that social media energizes,

alongside the rapid-pace of data sharing that it encourages, implies

that students can quicken the advancement of their imaginative,

basic considering, and communication forms in certain ways when

they utilize it. Social media advances self-directed learning, which

plans students to rummage around for answers and make choices

freely. When fortified in a classroom setting, these social media skills

can be guided and refined to produce better learning results and

basic mindfulness. Social media too permits students more

opportunity to put through and collaborate past the physical

classroom, which suggests students anyplace can begin to

encounter the all-inclusive associated world long sometime recently

they enter the workforce (Patil, Pune, 2018). The study is supported

by Hasnain, Nasreen, et. al., (2015), social media has a reverse

relationship with scholastic execution. It has a platform used in a

positive manner that can help students and youth in gaining

knowledge that can be used to enhance their academic

performance. Students utilize social media stages such as YouTube,

which has millions of instructive recordings, which offer assistance

to students to broaden their scope of information as well as create

different other good skills and talents. If students find a few great

and instructive recordings related to their ponders, they can share

them with their companions or classmates who can benefit by

observing them (Gorhe, 2019).The study of Gorhe has something

connection with Daniel, Isaac, et. al., (2017), it shows that Facebook

and YouTube channel use also increased in the skills/ability and

knowledge and outcomes of every student, Facebook was the most

visited social media sites as per a study. Furthermore, Facebook and

other platforms provide any updated information that could be a

great help for the study of students.

Over the years, it has been popular and has become a trusted

source of information. It is an excellent platform for students,

Internet and its technology also help to collaborate in the classroom

and build better and effective communication skills with students.

Teachers can make the class interesting through briefing

way, students in a class can gain more interest and retain more

information through the attractive PowerPoint slides.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Social Media

Students are frequently locked in in a few things at the same

time amid lessons and school time. They are utilizing Smartphones,

tablets, and utilizing social media on these gadgets whereas learning

and going to course. In any case, there are a few circumstances

likely affected by this, current thinking tests the impact of techno

push, cyber bullying, and media multitasking within the setting of

students in technology‐saturated classrooms and how this is often

influencing their academic performance (Raza, Khan, et. al., 2019).

According to Raza, Khan, et. al., (2019) comes about appears

that technostress, cyberbullying, and media multitasking harm

student performance, and school parental support moderates the

negative relationship between technostress and understudy

execution. Suggestions and commitments have moreover been

talked about. On the other hand, the advantages of social media is

In addition, Chukwuere, (2017), the impact of social media or new

media in their education institutions and society today is

undoubtedly overwhelming. Students in created and creating nations

are getting to be more dependent on social media and its

applications for different reasons. These reasons can lead to altering

social and individual life both scholastically and off-academic. In

addition, the role and utilization of social media in travelers‟ choice-

making and tourism operations and administration are broadly

examined. The key significance of social media is tall for tourism

competitiveness. Moderate advances are made by the industry is

reacting to trade openings by social media. The online world is

quickly advancing and a few companies may grasp modern

advances due to the weight to be advanced but are not considering

around what it implies to commerce in a virtual environment (Bank,

2015). Still, Evans, (2020) Social media alludes to implies of intuition

among individuals in which they make, share and trade data and

concepts in virtual communities and systems. It permits clients to

speak and interact with each other, to form, alter and share modern

shapes of printed, visual and sound substance. Social media has

begun making a negative effect by penetrating today’s society with

millions of us charmed, unfortunate habit, within the most recent

happenings using apps such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, and

so on. With innovation booming quickly from year to year and the

more youthful eras are the ones caught in this fast alter, it is, in this

manner, pivotal to toss more light on the impact of social media on

the scholastic execution of students. Besides, based on the gotten

comes about, male and female students' fulfillment of social media

utilize for collaborative learning and engagement emphatically

influenced their learning performance, although, within the case of

females, they were not completely fulfilled with seen ease of utilizing

and value. They consider concluding that in general, dynamic

dialogs, and subsequently, their utilize they were not completely

fulfilled with seen ease of utilize and value. They consider conclude

that in general, dynamic collaborative learning and engagement

through social media enhances the learning exercises of students

and encourages bunch dialogs, and subsequently, their utilize ought

to be energized in learning and instructing forms in higher

instruction teach (MugahedAl, Mohd, et. al., 2018). Also,

Drahosovaa, Balcob, (2017), Social media permit individuals to trade

thoughts and suppositions, examine together the substance of

pages, and make contacts online. It is distinctive from conventional

standard media, in that their substance, can make everyone as well

contribute to it or comment on it. They may have content organize,

maybe a sound, video or photos, and other visual shapes that bring

together communities and help individuals who need to relate

together.

All in all, Social media has a big impact in our society especially

in school and in every student, because nowadays social media are

the most used tool as a learning platform. Social media can make

Our Your

the individual more productive and it can help to their development,

it can also help to the students in collaboration and to easily

communicate with others in order to make a task even they don’t

have physical contact. Social media gives lot information that will

help the students to be more creative in doing things but of course

there is always a negative effect in using it. Abusing those social

media can lead to laziness of students when they spend a lot of time

in using it. Some of the student can have a bad experience and it

will affect their mental health. Lastly, Proper usage of social media is

good especially in using it only as a learning tool and have discipline

in utilizing it.

Academic Performance of College Students

Academic achievement is vital for the fruitful advancement of

young individuals in society. Students who do well in school are

superior able to form the transition into adulthood and to realize

word related and financial victory. Scholarly execution is the degree

to which a student, instructor, or institution has achieved its brief or

long-term instructive objectives. Besides, there are uncertain comes

Our Your
METRO MANILA COLLEGE 22
College of Education
about over which person components effectively foresee scholarly

execution, components such as test uneasiness, environment,

inspiration, and feelings require thought when creating models of

school accomplishment.

According to, Narad, Abdullah, (2016) scholastic execution is the

information picked up which is evaluated by marks by an instructor

and/or instructive objectives set by students and instructors to be

accomplished over a particular period. They included that these

objectives are measured by utilizing persistent evaluation or

examinations comes about. Also, Arshad, Zaidi, et. al., (2015) shown

that academic performance measures instruction results. They

focused that it appears and measures the degree to which an

instructive institution, instructors, and students have accomplished

their instructive objectives. Furthermore, Butler, (2018) looking at

college truly may well be a way of life choice. A bit like working out

your body, you won’t see comes around on the off chance that you

just don’t do it routinely adequate. Pressing a few times as of late a

test is like starting your shoreline body workout two days at some

point as of late summer. Instep, make examining a penchant it

ought to be a long and solid prepare in case it’s aiming to be useful.

Agreeing with this theory, being a college student is not

straightforward. All you have got need to do is to put all your effort

into orchestrating to meet and accomplish your incredible comes

around in all perspectives. Keep your effort unfaltering adequate in

organize for you to step forward and fulfill more that are required

for being a qualified college student. In addition, Zafirakou, (2018)

states that there should not any preventions for a student to get to

higher quality learning. In arrange to have higher instruction, one

must define advancements utilizing the best ways and techniques.

Besides, Hasnain, Nasreen, et. al., (2015) carried out and

investigate to study the relationship between the utilize of social

media and students’ academic execution in Pakistan. The results

propose social media has a reverse relationship with academic

performance. The social media stage utilized in a positive way it can

offer assistance to students and youth in picking up information that

can be utilized to improve their academic execution. Moreover, Raut,

Our Your

Patil, (2016) highlights how social media affected the education

sector the study uncovered different positive and negative impacts

of social media on instruction or students. It too highlighted the

degree to play down the negative effect of social media on students’

academic performances such as; directing their get to social media

destinations, diminishing the sum of time went through on social

network locales. As well as, Roy, (2017) there are points of interest

of utilizing portable applications in education, he states, "In these

changing times, students are more driven towards using a portable

phone for each reason. A smart phone they call it. The world is at

the fingertips and a student can get to any data from anyplace. This

reduces the chance of going to a library and looking for the

information. A portable phone hence can be utilized for a number of

such purposes. What makes the data easily available is a portable

application. Each versatile application features one-of-a-kind include

which offers it is possess set of administrations. Also, states

students these days can fair press their phones to provide

knowledge. In agreement with what students can have, there are

Our Your
METRO MANILA COLLEGE 25
College of Education
five modern benefits can someone has when utilizing a portable

phone particularly versatile educational application. The modern

learning strategy, upgrade parent instructor communication, e-

books, and online studies, different work and diminish

communication hole between students and institution. Then,

Klimova, (2019) portable academic applications can help students to

be more profitable in course cooperation and improve their self-

confidence. These days, a few students get to be more stretch since

of trouble in academic consider in that way versatile academic

applications are more accommodating to the students to show less

stretch and uneasiness since portable academic applications help

students to think about effectively. Aditionally, Kaviyarasi,

Balasubramanian, (2018) in academic performance, each college

student has their possess learning capacity where is not the same in

all. As learning depends on one’s level of insights, interest, and

inspiration, essentially the rate of learning varies from one to one.

One may be a quick learner and the other takes more time to

memorize the same thing. In expansion, academic performance

Our Your
METRO MANILA COLLEGE 26
College of Education
depends on a student how they execute learning and performance

in their possess way, and it has something to do with their back

circular and the life they live. Along with this, Okano, Kaczmarzyk,

et. al., (2019) Way better quality, longer length, and more

prominent consistency of rest related with way better grades. Be

that as it may, there was no connection between rest measures on a

single night sometimes recently a test and test execution; instep,

rest length and quality for the month and the week sometimes

recently a test connected with way better grades. Rest measures

accounted for about 25% of the fluctuation in scholastic execution.

These discoveries give quantitative, objective proof that way better

quality, long term, and more noteworthy consistency of rest are

emphatically related with way better scholastic execution in college.

Likewise, Students ought to be uncovered to the kind of self-efficacy

intercession program for the students’ to be having a kind of

certainty to feel that, they can truly perform well and bargain with

all academic academic-related positively, which in turn move

Our Your

forward academic accomplishment of students’ emphatically (Kolo,

Jaafar, et. al., 2017).

To conclude, academic success is vital since it is unequivocally

connected to the positive results we value. Adults who are

scholastically effective and with tall levels of instruction are more

likely to be employed, have steady work, have more business

openings than those with less instruction and earn higher pay rates,

are more likely to have wellbeing protections, are less subordinate

on social help, are less likely to lock in criminal activity, are more

dynamic as citizens and charitable volunteers and are healthier and

more joyful. Scholarly victory is vital since working individuals will

require higher levels of education to handle the mechanically

requesting occupations of the long run. Presently a day you would

like. Post-secondary education arranges to urge work.

Online Learning under the New Normal Set Up

Learning and instructing can happen at times that are more

helpful and profitable for both students and instructors. Students

Our Your
METRO MANILA COLLEGE 28

can work at their claim pace inside a given system and the online

learning and instructing engagement prepare can be broken into

little more visit parcels of time, with an opportunity for reflection in

between.

According to, Watts, (2016) asynchronous instruction implies

that instructors and learners don't have synchronous sessions which

students have get to course substance through the Web at any time

they need or require. Communication among the members happens

primarily through the mail and online gatherings and is ordinarily

directed by the educators. In addition, Campus Pioneer, (2019) open

plan online courses students work asynchronously with all the

materials being given carefully. Even though there are due dates for

submitting assignments, students working at their claim pace have a

few freedoms as to when they do their course work. Moreover,

Zhang, Worthington, (2017) teaching via distance education at both

the undergraduate and graduate levels are more profitable than

face-to-face teaching at higher education institutions in China.

Additionally, Adams, Randall, et. al., (2015) broadly agree that the

Our Your

College of Education
mixed learning arrangement produces way better learning

accomplishment among students, other studies have appeared the

exact inverse. The overall finding is that college students taking

after a crossover basic course in microbiology were less effective

than their peers taking after the same course in a face-to-face

forum. Less interaction with the material or a sense of confinement

emerging from less lesson participation is checked among potential

reasons for the crossover students’ lower victory. Also, Singh,

Thurman, (2019) online learning can be named as a device that can

make the teaching-learning prepare more student-centered, more

imaginative, and indeed more adaptable. Online learning is

characterized as “learning encounters in synchronous or offbeat

situations utilizing distinctive gadgets (e.g., mobile phones, laptops,

etc.) with web get to. In these situations, students can be anyplace

(free) to memorize and associated with teaches and other students”.

Furthermore, Paramount Direct, (2020) blended learning may be a

combination of both online and offline learning strategies with the

utilize of innovation. Online is when the students think about with

Our Your

their instructor and classmates through an application that

employments a webcam whereas offline is when the educator gives

the students with the lesson, seatwork, or task that they can wrap

up at their claim pace, inside the due date. As well as, the University

of Illinois, (2018) Everybody has their own style for collecting and

organizing data into valuable information, and the online

environment can be especially well suited to a few learning styles

and identity needs. Learners have diverse learning styles or a

combination of styles, online teachers ought to plan exercises that

address numerous modes of learning to progress the probability of

effective experiences for each lesson member. And, both students

and facilitators must have the least level of computer information in

arrange to operate effectively in an internet environment. For

illustration, they must be able to utilize an assortment of look

motors and be comfortable exploring the World Wide Web, as well

as be recognizable with newsgroups, FTP strategies, and e-mail

(University of Illinois, 2020). Then, Baticulon, Sy, et. al., (2021)

among 3,670 restorative students, 93% owned a smartphone and

83% had a portable workstation or desktop computer. To access

themselves physically and rationally able of locks in online learning.

Boundaries were classified beneath five categories: innovative,

person, residential, organization, and community barriers. Lastly,

Usher, Borak, (2017) expressed that peer evaluation could be a well-

known procedure for assessing open assignments and for breaking

the social separation encompassing separate instruction. However, A

few social supporting sites such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook,

WhatsApp have been useful to the educator and students to have

strong, collaborative learning with information sharing (Liu, Lee,

2020).

To sum up, online learning may be a developing and energizing

better approach to memorize almost anything. If there’s a course

you’ve got continuously needed to require or an aptitude you have

got continuously needed to memorize, but you’ve got not had the

time to go to a conventional face-to-face lesson or there hasn’t been

an opportunity close you, at that point, online learning could be your

answer. Today’s online learning openings offer everything from one-

hour live workshops to online degrees. There’s essentially something

for everybody, all you’ve got to do is discover it.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Social Learning Theory

This study was anchored on the theory of social learning by

Albert Bandura (1977) According to Bandura, It examines how

environmental and cognitive variables interact to shape human

learning and behavior, the necessity of observing, modeling, and

imitating other people's behaviors, attitudes, and emotional

reactions is emphasized.

Social media has a tremendous impact on a student's ability to

Our Your

learn and study. According to Gandini (2016), social media for

academics has given established media channels a venue to share

their work and put their skills to good use around the world.

It has a lot of advantages in terms of learning since it provides

a lot of information and resources, as well as a lot of locations for

interaction and telecommunications, supports collaborative learning

activities, and encourages learners to understand more about self-

learning and other people.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

According to Chukwuere (2017), the significance of social media

or new media in today's educational institutions and society is

undeniably enormous. For many reasons, students in developed and

developing countries are becoming increasingly reliant on social

media and its apps.

In academic settings, social media allows students to seek out

more valuable information, participate in learning groups, and

engage in other instructional frameworks that help them learn more

effectively.

Academic performance, according to Arshad, Zaidi, et al., (2015), is

a measure of instruction outcomes. They concentrated on how it

appears and measures the degree to which an educational

institution, instructors, and students have met their educational

goals.

As an independent variable, social media is a computer-based

invention that promotes the sharing of ideas, considerations, and

data through the creation of virtual networks and communities. By

Our Your
METRO MANILA COLLEGE 36

design, social media is Internet-based and allows clients to

communicate with one another quickly via electronic means.

Students can communicate with their lecturers or classmates

online if they have any concerns about their studies; this will allow

them to interact with their instructors and classmates in a more

flexible manner.

As a dependent variable, academic performance, which is a

subordinate and dependent variable that is used to estimate student

achievement in various academic courses. Homework, examinations,

exams, papers, expositions, venture inquires, case thinks about the

investigation, and rubrics for verbal and other performances can all

be used to assess it. Albert Bandura's theory of social learning

served as the foundation for this research (1977) It investigates how

environmental and cognitive elements interact to create human

learning and behavior, according to Bandura, and emphasizes the

importance of seeing, modeling, and mimicking other people's

behaviors, attitudes, and emotional reactions.

This research will aid in determining the impact of social media

Our Your

on college students' academic performance both inside and outside

of the classroom. It also aids in reducing the number of negative

effects of social media on students by teaching them how to

correctly use social media and make their daily lives at school more

productive.

METHOD OF RESEARCH

This part presents the methods and procedures of research that

can be used in gathering data that needed in our research. It

includes the Research design, respondents, instrument, construction

and validation, administration and retrieval, statistical treatment of

data.

RESEARCH DESIGN

This study will use descriptive research to examine the impact of

social media on college students' academic performance. Descriptive

research is a type of research that focuses on describing the

characteristics of the study's population. This technique concentrates

Our Your
METRO MANILA COLLEGE 50
College of Education
on the "what" of the subject rather than the "why."

According to (Fluet, 2021), It's a definitive quantitative research

approach that's used to evaluate ideas and display attributes or

abilities.

As researchers, if they want to know how social media affects

college students as respondents, they will conduct a demographic

survey of college students in various disciplines, collect population

data, and then ask specific questions regarding this statistic section.

The study will then reveal details on "what is social media's

influence," but not any investigative information on "why" the trends

exist.

SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

This study shall employ the combination of convenience and

snowball sampling, According to Edgar, T., Manz, D., (2017)

Convenience sampling is a means of collecting samples from around

a location or Internet service. Convenience sampling is a research

strategy in which researchers collect market research data from a

pool of respondents who are easily accessible. It is the most often

used sample technique because it is extremely quick, simple, and

cost-effective. Members are often friendly and willing to participate

in the study.

Our Your
METRO MANILA COLLEGE 53
College of Education
According from Explorable.com, (2021), snowball sampling

technique works like chain referral. After observing the initial

subject, the researcher asked for assistance from the subject to help

identify people with a similar trait of interest. Snowball sampling,

also known as chain-referral sampling, is a non-probability sampling

approach in which the samples have hard-to-find characteristics.

This is a technique for recruiting samples for a research project in

which existing individuals refer new subjects.

The study's goal is to determine the impact of social media on

college students' academic performance in all fields. Because the

current situation has become the new normal, the researchers chose

to study 20% of the overall population as all subjects.

Our Your

INSTRUMENT USED

The researchers made utilize the survey in gathering data.

(Survey Questionnaire)

Survey Questionnaire

The researchers used questionnaire that provides a script for

presenting a standard set of questions and response. The purpose

of questionnaire is to know the impact of using social media in

academic performance of the students.

The part 1 of the survey questionnaire would be the Personal

information of the respondents which includes: Name (optional),

Age, Sex, Year Level and Program Enrolled. Next, part 2 Social

Media used by the Respondents as an aid in their studies. Part 3

Our Your
METRO MANILA COLLEGE 55
College of Education
would be the Extent of Social Media utilization and the part 4 is the

Impact of Social Media in the Academic Performance of the

Respondents.

CONSTRUCTION AND VALIDATION OF THE INSTRUMENT

The researchers read books, magazines, research papers, theses

and surfed data on the internet to ripen concepts, frameworks,

variables, and indicators of the study which became the basis in the

construction of the questionnaire. Also, the researchers collected

information about the used instrument through reading different

related studies both local and foreign on the internet and find

sources to the library that will help them to know the validity of the

instrument. They make the questionnaire by replying to the

statement of the problem and of course, they also consult their

research adviser to know if they need some revision to the

questionnaire so that the researchers could improve the

Our Your
METRO MANILA COLLEGE 56
College of Education
questionnaire and also in every program there is one (1) validator

from each program with the total of seven (7) validators and from

the seven (7) programs.

ADMINISTRATION AND RETRIEVAL OF THE INSTRUMENT

After considering the validity of the used instrument, the

researchers prepared the final draft of the questionnaire then asked

for approval from their research adviser, and also the researchers

made protocol letter to the respective personnel of every

department in college for the distribution of the questionnaire to the

college students and also for the School President.

The researchers distributed it to the respondents with the use of

google forms and waited for their response through g-mail. The

questionnaire was collected as soon as the respondents finished

answering the survey. The researchers are expecting and hoping for

Our Your
METRO MANILA COLLEGE 57

100% retrieval. And all the data will be gathered will be treated with

utmost confidentiality.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF THE DATA

The researchers manually organized and prepared the

information after accommodating procured information to induce the

particular way of analyzing and deciphering the comes about. In

treating the assembled information, the taking after instruments was

connected:

1. Frequency and Percentage Distribution

This was used to relate a part of a whole in the total responses.

This is a numerical especially on frequency distribution.

This was used in determining statement of the problem 1 and 2.

Our Your
METRO MANILA COLLEGE 58

P = N x 100

Where:

P = percentage

f = frequency

N = no. respondents

Ranking

This was used to determine the arrangement of responses for

given variable to degree of the importance as perceived by the

respondents. The equivalent point assigned to each item indicated

the extent of the existence of condition as perceived by the

respondents was determined by estimating each weighted average

which become the verbal descript.

This was used in determining the Ranking in the statement of the

problem 1, 2, 3, and 5.

2. Weighted Mean

Our Your
METRO MANILA COLLEGE 59
College of Education
To compute the data of respondents who used social media in

academic purposes weighted mean was applied. The collected data

were categorized and were given corresponding weights. The weight

was multiplied by the number of replies in each category to be

added and then divided from the sum of the product. This was used

to address the Weighted Mean in statement of the problem 3 and 5.

Formula:

fw
WM= N

Where:

WM = weighted mean

Fw = sum of the products of the frequency

N = no. of respondents

3. Four Point Likert Scale

Likert scale is applied as one of the most fundamental and

frequently used psychometric tools in educational and social

sciences research. Simultaneously, it is also subjected to a lot of

debates and controversies in regards with the analysis and inclusion

Our Your
METRO MANILA COLLEGE 60
College of Education
of points on the scale.

Each statement has four responses classified under the level of

frequency with weights 1, 2, 3, and 4. The corresponding point

assigned by estimating each weighted average with the following

equivalent verbal description:

Numerical interpretation Verbal interpretation

3.26 – 4.00 4 Very High Extent

2.51 – 3.25 3 High Extent

1.76 – 2.50 2 Low Extent

1.00 – 1.75 1 Very Low Extent

This was used to address the Four Point Likert scale in statement of

the problem 3 and 5.

4. Kruskal Wallis Test

The Kruskal Wallis test is the non-parametric alternative to the

One Way ANOVA. Non-parametric means that the test doesn’t

assume your data comes from a particular distribution. The H test is

used when the assumptions for ANOVA aren’t met (like the

assumption of normality). It is sometimes called the one-way

Our Your
METRO MANILA COLLEGE 61

ANOVA on ranks, as the ranks of the data values are used in the test

rather than the actual data points.

This was used in determining the Kruskal Wallis Test in statement

of the problem 4.

relationship between the age of respondents and the usage of social

media for the academic performance of college students. Also, it

shows that the computed value of sex with 3.15 is lower than the

critical value of 3.84, so that hypothesis was accepted. Furthermore,

the computed value of the year level with 0.49 is lower than the

critical value with 7.81, thus accepting the hypothesis. Moreover, the

computed value of the program enrolled with 11.11 is lower than

the critical value of 16.92, which concludes that the hypothesis was

accepted.

This result affirms that students can utilize social media to
