AIM: Study the maintenance and troubleshooting of ups.

UPS
Uninterruptible Power Supply is a device that provides battery backup when the electrical
power fails or drops to an unacceptable voltage level. Small UPS systems provide power for a
few minutes; enough to power down the computer in an orderly manner, while larger systems
have enough battery for several hours. In mission critical datacentres, UPS systems are used
for just a few minutes until electrical generators take over.

Maintenance of UPS
The power supply systems must provide maximum reliability and power quality while its costs
are to be minimized. These requirements present a major design, operation, and maintenance
challenges due to the dilemma between supply improvements and the associated investments.
The main impacts of power interruptions and low power quality are the costs and safety
associated with them. Therefore, electrical loads are classified according to the impacts of
interrupting their power supply; loads are classified to non-essential, essential, and critical. The
impact of power interruptions on non-essential loads are minor while interruptions have a
significant impact on the essential loads, especially if the interruption duration is above a
specific threshold value. Critical loads are a class of the loads that should not be interrupted
under any circumstances. The hazards, and costs associated with interrupting critical loads are
usually intolerable even if the interruption duration is very small. For essential and critical
loads an alternative safe supply must be available for providing the required reliability and
power quality levels. The Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) is a main tool for providing
safe power supply for these load classes. UPSs have many designs, operation, and control
algorithms
The only consumables in a UPS system are the capacitors and fans but these generally only
require replacement from around year 8 of operation and only then as part of a general
refurbishment. Most companies view uninterruptible power supplies as critical pieces of
infrastructure with a working life of 10 years and so may look to replace rather than refurbish
them.
Troubleshooting of UPS
Steps to troubleshoot a ups:
1. Check that is Fuse broken or not. ( If broke, just take out and change it, normally is
5A 3A or something )
2. Open the screw, from the back side and open the cover.
3. Un-plug the red and black cable that attached to the battery.
4. Take out the battery and take a photo ( with your phone ? ) or mark down the value (
because maybe you don’t understand what they wrote on the battery. )
5. Bring your UPS battery photo or note to electric shop to buy one.
6. Put the new battery to the same location in the UPS.
7. Plug in the black and red cable to the battery.
8. Close the cover
9. Power on
