The students in the trumpet class today were as energetic as ever. Today, we went
through the typical routine starting with counting complex rhythms. The teacher made a
contest out of it. I feel this is more beneficial because some students will work harder just to be
the best. Then we took out our mouthpiece and the teacher did a call-and-response. I walked
around and checked student’s feet to make sure they were flat on the floor, that their shoulders
were low and that there was no tension, and even buzzed with the students. Kaitlyn Norwood
taught a line out of the beginner trumpet book. Her focus for the teach was to get the students
more familiar with playing intervals. I walked around the class to assist students with not
overblowing notes and correct fingerings. Then I taught the students my lesson which was
focused on counting ties. I had the students count and clap the first chunk, I demonstrated first.
Then I split the room into two groups, the A group counted and clapped the rhythm while group
I learned that having everyone’s focus is really important for the students, but also it
reassures the teacher that everyone is receiving the same information. I had times where a
student was distracted and it distracted me. In the end, I continued with having the students
