Hamilton Marathon Clinic

Newsletter. December 2021.

After a strange 2020 we looked like there was some relative normality to this year until August
when the country went into lockdown and all events were put on hold. It appears unlikely we
will get back to clubroom prior to Christmas so it will probably be four or five months from when
we have been able to have a formal club night. It does make it hard to operate a club (though
many businesses are in a similar situation) At this stage Hawks have not made a call on the
future but hopefully will do so prior to the year end. It also means it has been impossible to
rebuild and attract new members which is not good for future viability of the club. Luckily, we
are getting a few Sunday club days in and also having a Christmas dinner night.

Blueberry Run

After much soul searching and trying to get an understanding on the requirements now in place
for covid passports, we have regretfully made the decision to cancel the Blueberry run for 2022.
With the event being so close to the introduction of the covid passport we were not sure we had
the personnel or ability to ensure we could carry out Covid vaccination checks in accordance
with Government requirements. The requirements would have also applied to all helpers. We
were also unsure if the changes could affect the use of the amenities. Also, with uncertainties
we could not be sure that there could be further changes by the government and we would have
to cancel at the last moment. Hopefully by 2023 we can run the event again.

Saturday 11th December Lonestar Rototuna 6.30pm. Names of those wanting to attend need to
be received by Sunday morning, 5/12 either at the club event or email to Louise. This will enable
firm reservations to be made. As Lonestar is a club sponsor it is hopeful we have a good
attendance. Partners are welcome.
In line with Government requirements, Lonestar require that patrons have a covid
passport. Could you please not use any of the Lonestar vouchers you might have won on this
night. Please let Louise know if you want to attend. Email treweek@iconz.co.nz
Club meetings in New Year
We still don’t know status of ability to use clubrooms in new year but we will make a commitment
to get things underway with the first Sunday event on 16 th Jan being the 8km and picking at
Blueberry Country Ohaupo, and Tuesdays starting on 18th. If we cannot get into clubrooms we
will still meet in carpark.

Members Update
With Club nights, Park Runs, and events all being cancelled, many of the club members have
changed their focus on what they are doing to maintain motivation. Talking to some and this is
what they have been doing.
Virtual events- either planned virtual or in case where events have been cancelled and a virtual
option has come up. Tauranga Marathon and City to Surf were a couple I know of, and covered
distances from 10km, half marathon to full marathon. Luanda, Mandy and Keith have done some
of these events.
Lex has set a target of 3000km for the year which includes elevation climb of 1km for every
100km. He says with so many of the tracks closed it was getting difficult to find routes with a
good sharp climb but will get there.
Ross has set a target of 70kms per week based on 6 days out and one rest day.
There are a few members who while not setting specific targets are trying to get out every day.
Others who have had long term injuries are working on getting speed and stamina back into
their bodies.
Keith has set a target of 1500km from 1st of August till 31st December (300km per month) and
is on target to achieve.

Below are some medals which were for virtual events done over last couple of years, 250km,
800km and 1700km. With these each time Strava pit the distance you did into the programme
it showed a map of where you were and also google street view so you could see what the view
looked like.
The club is grateful to our sponsors. Please use them when you can
