In the process of creating my project, a brochure for Beazer Homes, I thought about advertising
to people who want to be new home owners, the overview of what the company is about. I
made sure to show there were many states the business builds in around the United States. I
focused on Texas, where I am from and where my mother, Erin Bevins works in sales for Beazer
Homes.
She was the person I interviewed for insight on the company and what her everyday schedule
looks like. “Usually, my day starts with setting flyers up, every one has a different floor plan
consisting of the models available in the community at the time, I check emails, talk to
corporate offices, make sure everything is in check for the week.” My mother Erin told me. It
was very interesting getting a sneak peek into my moms’ typical day. My motive behind
choosing her company for this project was me wanting this to be my future career. I learned so
many new things I could share on my brochure, for example, I did not know the home builder
sold in more states than Texas, I thought it was a Texas-based company only. By knowing that
information, I can share that with others to know potential home owners are not limited. Plus,
that means there are many more models and types of homes to match with the environment in
a different state. As of right now, Beazer Homes is one of the top 10 builders in the United
States. I asked my mom where she could see the company in the next 5 years and she told me
she can see the company moving up to top 5 in the United States and more, modern models
that are more extravagant and in many more states and communities in existing states.
Choosing the house is just one thing, but purchasing and going through the process to getting
the keys to your home is also something to be considered. The process of purchasing to getting
your keys takes longer than I would personally expect. That is also another thing I learned from
interviewing my mother. It takes a full six months to get everything needed for the owner to
fully move in. It starts off with obviously determining the floor plan, next, the employee will
write the contract for the house and the new owners. After, she will turn the contract into
corporate offices for approval, then it will be sent to the city for approval in state, which is a six
week process, after, they will get a permit from city officials, and lastly, if the home is not built,
up to four months of construction building the new home. Sounds easy enough and out of the
customers hands, but my mom makes sure the customer is communicated to throughout the
whole process knowing where everything stands and if anything goes wrong. If the new home
owner drops the contract, the house is still built and ready to be sold to a new customer
afterwards. My mother said this has happened many times and is completely normal,
sometimes the owners are not ready 100% or something else came up and all you can do is
move on and sell to the next. Although that is a coincidence that does happen in the industry, it
has not happened many times with this company. After the six-month process, my mother and
other employees get paid in commission. Every house my mother has sold, she gets 2.4% of
purchase price.
Learning everything top to bottom of the company my mom works for was fascinating and I
enjoyed being able to put together a brochure that could promote the company and everything
my mom works for.
