CREATIVE HANGING HANDICRAFT DECORATIONS USING DUCK FEATHERS

INTRODUCTION

Decorations with feathers are a universal phenomenon in human history. Objects


decorated with feathers were regarded as fine artworks and hence were enormously prized. It
was widely used in textiles, jewelry and painting in ancient America, Europe and China.

Historically feathers have been worn as fashion accessories, while feathers are often
considered a by- product of poultry production (and often a waste by product). Some producers
raise poultry especially for their feathers. Feathers are used in a number of decorative products
such as boas, feather fans, masks, costume accessories, bird ornaments, and even earrings
and flowers.

Creative hanging handicrafts decorations like dream catcher were adopted in the Pan-
Indian Movement of the 1960’s and 1970’s as marked native crafts. Dream catcher is a circular
framed net with a hole in the center that is used by some American Indian peoples to help block
bad dreams and catch good ones. Traditional dream catchers were made from wooden hoops
with thread webbing, beads and feathers.

OBJECTIVES

1. To learn the value of duck by products like feather value in terms of economic,
method of production and to increase the income of individual product.
2. To develop the student’s skills and knowledge in making handicrafts decorations
made of feathers.
MATERIALS AND METHODS

Materials Used

The different materials used in the study are the following: duck feathers, wool yarn,
stick glue, scissor, handmade ring, glue gun.

Preparation of the Product

1. All the materials are gathered and prepared.


2. The feathers are collected. Weave the string through the wreath or the handmade ring by
wrapping a wool yarn.
3. To start weaving the string, simply tie a knot onto the branch circle.
4. Tie pieces of leather strap or a decorative braided cord to the bottom of your dream catcher
5. Use beads or stones and feathers as additional design to make it impressive.

RESULT AND DISCUSSION

Creative handicrafts decorations using feathers are easy and interesting. Feathers are
waste products and can create different ideas like dream catcher.

CONCLUSION

Dream catcher is invention of tradition has gained wide-spread acceptance and


innumerable applications. However, consideration of the re-invention of tradition, particularly in
the scope of material studies, has received minimal coverage. Increased production and
marketing of native –made dream catcher.

RECOMMENDATION

We can create different creative products from feathers. Feathers are waste products
from ducks. Dream catcher is easy to do, and good recreation especially with a pandemic and
very affordable at low cost of materials. Creative products are source of income and livelihood.

REFLECTION

Creative hanging handicrafts like dream catcher using feathers by product. Dream
catcher place inside of the house or room. Ancient time, believe that it can protect oneself form
negative dreams while letting positive dreams through. The shape of the catcher is circle
represents circle of life and how forces like the sun and moon travel each day and night across
the sky, the dream catcher web represents bad dreams, during the night and disposes them
when day comes as good dreams. The feathers act as a fluffy, pillow like that allows gently
sleeping person undisturbed, the beads symbolize to spider and others believe beads symbolize
good dreams that could not pass through the web and charms.

Dream catchers are highly respected in our household, because we believe for the
purpose and the value of the artwork. Using feathers by products can create different ideas for
decorations.

PROCESSING OF DUCK MEAT PATTIES AS A SOURCE OF
LIVELIHOOD PROGRAM IN
OUR BARANGAY

INTRODUCTION

The meat and eggs from waterfowls (duck and goose) have high nutritional value and
consumers mostly prefer them for their taste and nutritional value and the fact that they contain
good quantities of essential amino and fatty acids.

In Asian countries, the popularity of duck is more pronounced compared to other parts of
the world, 84.2% of total duck meat produced in the world (FAO, 2017).

Ducks have a number of advantages over other poultry species, in particular disease
tolerance, hardy and easy to manage to herd particularly in wet lands (Omojola, 2007). In Asia,
technological interventions required to meet global demands through processing of different
ready-to-eat duck meat products. Duck meat products in many forms is needed to attract new
consumer that much effort been made to improve the quality of ready to eat duck meat products
which increase duck meat consumption worldwide.

In making duck patties, the general characteristics of duck meat are tough, dark in color
and strong in odor, which are most preferred by the consumers.

OBJECTIVES

1. To know the economic importance and benefits of duck meat and its product.
2. To learn on how to process a duck meat patties.
3. To provide a livelihood program/trainings by making a duck meat patties in our
Barangay
MATERIALS AND METHODS

Materials Used

The materials used in the study are the following: duck meat, fresh eggs, flour, baking
powder, salt, pepper, garlic, onion, water.

Preparation of the Product

Native ducks were purchased from local market. Slaughter and dressing was done in a
standard procedure. After dressing, the carcass was manually deboned and removed the skin.
After deboning, meat was kept in freezer till the preparation of patties.

Procedures in Making Duck Patties

Prepare all the materials needed.


Prepare 1 kilogram of duck breast. Wash, remove the skin and thin sliced
Using blender, grind the duck meat, onion and garlic.
Add 1/8 cup of soy sauce for coloring.
In a bowl, add 1 cup of water and mix well until all the dry ingredients dissolve.
Put 2 table spoons of salt and 1 teaspoon pepper to taste.
Beat egg and mix.
Add seasoning to taste.
Chilled for 30 minutes to have a better taste.
Packaging

RESULT AND DISCUSSION

The processing of the duck patties are widely used in frozen food industry. Based the
result, the duck patties has bigger weight compared to chicken patties. And duck meat is an
excellent source of protein.

CONCLUSION
The findings revealed a higher of decrease in sensory scores of duck patties at ambient
temperature than that of refrigeration temperature. During the storage periods, physic-chemical
changes and microbial profile of duck patties stored at ambient and refrigeration temperature
affect the quality and acceptability of duck patties.

RECOMMENDATION

Duck patties to be made are on the breast part and make sure the duck you are
slaughtering is young, and must be processing doing so and make sure your cleanliness of your
products.

REFLECTION

There are thousands of people who enjoy eating many kinds of ducks recipes, whether it
is boiled, fried, baked, or grilled with amazing taste. Healthy and simple duck patties that have
been heard before; processing of duck meat patties is one of the best and poplar choices. It is
also a source of livelihood in our Barangay instead of using meat and chicken.

In making duck patties, we also consider the characteristic of the meat for the
ingredients based on the recipe. We encourage farmers to raise ducks in backyard farming as
an alternative source of meat for our patties and also the small business promoting our products
to commercialize in our locality.

SUPPLEMENTATION OF POWDERED EGGSHELLS ON THE GROWTH
PERFORMANCE OF DUCKS

INTRODUCTION

Eggshells consist of calcium carbonate along with small amounts of protein and
other organic compounds. It is also the cheapest and most widely available form of
calcium in supplements. Eggshell has applications as a calcium source in animal feed.
Washed eggshells can be dried at 70-75 Celsius, and ground (Urlovskis et al .,
2016).Laying hens require calcium particles in their diet to maintain high rates of egg
production. Eggshells is incorporated in the layer feed to improve the bird health,
increase egg production and maintain high eggshells quality (Li, 2017).
Eggshells are waste materials from hatcheries, home and fast food industries
(Phil and Zhihong, 2009; Amu et al.,2005) and can be readily collected in plenty.
Eggshells waste disposal contributes to environmental pollution. Challenges
associated with disposal of eggshells include cost, availability of disposal sites, odor,
flies and abrasiveness (Phil and Zhihong, 2009). Eggshells present healthy, balanced
calcium due to its trace amounts of other minerals and is probably the best natural
source of calcium.
However, they can be processed into saleable products like fertilizer, used in
artwork, human and animal nutrition and building materials and to produce collagen from
the membranes (Phil and Zhihong, 2009, Amu et al., 2005).

OBJECTIVES

1. To determine the economic benefits using powdered eggshells.


2. To determine the strength properties of powdered eggshells as feed
additives.
3. To determine the benefits of eggshells on the growth performance
of duck.

MATERIALS AND METHODS


One thousand grams (1000g) of eggshells waste products are collected, washed and
dried. Using oven, eggshells become crispy and powdered. Powdered eggshell can be
a fed additive for animals as a source of calcium for their growth performance.

Procedures in Preparation of Powdered Eggshells.


Collect any broken eggshells from the chicken coop or your kitchen. Whenever you use eggs in
the kitchen, save the eggshells instead of throwing them away. Keep a small plastic container in
your kitchen to place your cracked eggs inside. You may also go out to your coop and collect
any broken eggs that you find. Collect the eggs until the containers are full.

Preheat your oven to 350 F (177C). ). Make sure one of the racks is in the center position inside
the oven. Turn on your oven and let it heat up completely before starting.

Spread the shells evenly on a baking tray.


Put the eggshells in your oven for 10 minutes. Set the tray of eggshell on the center of your
oven. After 10 minutes, take the eggshells out from the oven and let them cool completely. The
shell should crumble easily when you put pressure on them.

Put the eggshells in a re sealable plastic bag when they’re cool to the touch. Take all of the
eggshells off of the baking tray and transfer them into a bag. Try to fit as many eggs as you can
into the bag before sealing it tightly.

Hit the eggshells with a hammer of mortar to break them. Hold a hammer in your dominant hand
and the bag of eggshells in the other. Lightly hit the bag of eggshells with the side of your
hammer. Make sure the bag doesn’t pop open when you hit it by pushing out all of the air before
you seal the bag.

Make sure the eggshells become powderized and placed in the clean container.

RESULT AND DICUSSION

Eggshells are poultry waste product. Supplementation of eggshells powder provides a


good source of calcium as fed additives.

CONCLUSION
Nature provides us with a lot of useful materials and despite the fact that some of them
might seem to be without further use; their hidden application potential is always being
discovered. This also accounts for the eggshell waste, one of the most common food wastes.

RECOMMENDATION

Eggshells powdered can serve as a substitute calcium carbonate for needed by animals
and plants. Eggshells are rich in calcium and others minerals that help your garden thrive which
is they make a great fertilizer, and also for animal fed.

REFLECTION

Egg shells are most good quality and useful use for plants and animals fed and
substitute organic. So never toss out those eggshells, they are not garbage, but are useful and
have a purpose. We can also save money by replacing many expensive, toxic chemical
products, organic source of calcium fed additives.

Utilization of eggshells by product can help farmers and small business especially in
poultry production. It is a good source of nutrients needed by poultry to met their nutrient
requirements to increase production, adequate supply and demand.
