Independent Reading Project (Group A)
Over the next 2 weeks you will be reading an independent reading book that is assigned by the teacher. It
is a book that should be “just right” for you. You will have time to read in class but you will also have to
read some of your book at home. It is important that you bring your book back to school each day for in-
class reading. At 3 different times throughout the reading, you will have to check in by completing a
response to your reading. This will be done through a poem, a picture, and a letter. You will receive an
overall project grade as part of your 2nd quarter grade.

Write a friendly letter to a friend or someone in your
family. Give them a summary of your book telling them
the beginning, middle, and end of your story. Make sure
to include if you recommend it or not and why. The letter
should be ½-1 page in length.

Visually display the setting from your book. You may use
marker, crayon, colored pencil, computer graphics, magazine
clippings, etc. You may not include any characters or events
in your display. Make sure you are prepared for this work
day.

Read the sample character poems. Choose one poem to model your
character poem after. Then, write a poem about your main character that
follows the same format as the sample poem that you chose. Make sure
to give details specific to the main character.
Choose a setting different than where your book took place. Draw a
photo of an important event from your book set in this new setting.
Then, write 3-5 sentences about how the event would be different if it
took place in this new setting.
Write a friendly letter from one character in your book to another. Think
about the relationship between the 2 characters. What might they want
to tell each other? What questions would they want to ask? What

Grading
-Picture and paragraph identify the differences between the new setting and the
setting of the book. Details for how the event would change are identified. (10)
-Demonstrates deep thinking. (5)
-Letter is specific to the characters it is written to and includes details from the
