INSTRUCTIONS: Body Systems Analogy Model Assessment

Biology 1

In science, models are used for a variety of purposes, such as to represent a system, parts of a system, or
how two systems interact. The models that you will create for this assessment MUST be analogies, meaning
that you will make comparisons between how the body systems work and other non-biology items.

For example, we used an analogy when teaching you about permeability. We compared the plastic baggie
to a window screen. Both are selectively permeable, just in different ways. The window screen is permeable
to air but not to insects, just like the plastic baggie is permeable to iodine but not to starch.

You will be creating TWO analogy models to show how the body systems work together to transport
important substances throughout the body. These analogy models must be VISUAL (an illustration,
diagram, 3-D model, etc.) and they must be accompanied by detailed CAPTIONS and DESCRIPTIONS that
fully explain how the analogy items are similar to the functions of the body systems and transport
processes.

Part A - Choose one of the following:

● The transport of oxygen from the lungs into the bloodstream
● The transport of oxygen from the bloodstream into a cell

Part B - Choose one of the following:

● The transport of glucose from the small intestine into the bloodstream
● The transport of glucose from the bloodstream into a cell

How will you be assessed?

We are much more interested in the thinking behind your analogies than we are in the artistic quality of
your analogies. If you are not a natural artist, that is okay! The grade on this summative assessment will be
based on the following:
● Do the comparisons you make in the analogies make sense?
● Are you accurate in your descriptions of the body systems and transport processes?
● Are your captions and descriptions detailed and complete so that we can thoroughly understand
the analogy comparisons you are making?
In other words, make sure we understand WHY you chose the analogies that you did and WHY the
comparisons make sense. For details about how you will be graded, refer to the rubric on the next page.

PROCEDURE:
STEP ONE - Complete the Planning Worksheet posted in Google Classroom. DON'T TURN IT IN YET!
You will turn in the assignment after you have completed Step 4 below.
STEP TWO - Create your analogy models.
STEP THREE - Check the rubric to make sure you have included all of the necessary information.
STEP FOUR - Take pictures of your analogy models and submit them in Google Classroom along
with the Planning Worksheet. Then click on TURN IN! (Also hand in this sheet with paper versions)
