When I was a kid I really enjoyed magic shows. My mother used to take me
to the parks and in those places they did magic events, it was really
surprising for me.

Read the following text and answer the questions below.

Sofía Margarita Vergara Vergara was born and raised in Barranquilla, Colombia. Her mother,
Margarita Vergara Dávila de Vergara, is a housewife. Her father, Julio Enrique Vergara
Robayo, provides cattle to the meat industry. She has five siblings. She was educated at a
private bilingual Spanish/English school. She then went on to study pre-dentistry. However,
Sofía was discovered by a photographer, whilst at the beach. She has worked to various jobs
in modeling and television. At age 23, she was a runway model. From 1995 to 1998, she co-
hosted a travel show, Fuera de serie  (1995), which gave her exposure in the United States.
Her first film role was the criminal comedy Big Trouble (2002) Sofia has not only been an
actress, she has a son named Manolo.

Catalina Sandino Moreno was born on April 19, 1981 in Bogotá, Colombia. She has worked as
an actress and a producer, known for  María, llena eres de gracia  (2004), Che: Part
One (2008) and  Fast Food Nation (2006). She has been married to  David Elwell  since April
15, 2006. They have one child.
Grammy-winning pop singer Shakira was born in Barranquilla, Colombia, on February 2, 1977.
She is of Lebanese, Spanish and Italian descent. Shakira began her musical career at the age
of 12 and quickly captured fans around the world. She has won different awards. She won the
2001 Best Latin pop Grammy for her "MTV Unplugged" album. She has two kids. Her husband
is a famous soccer player. She has performed as an actress, music producer, and a composer.
She has been recognized for her effort to contribute to a good education for poor people I
her country.

1. Who do you think is the most interesting woman? Why?


The most interesting woman is Shakira, because she has a Grammy and it's really hard to get
that with the sheer number of great artists in this era.

2. Do you know any other famous Colombian women? Tell about her or them.
One of Colombia's most famous women is called Amparo Grisales, who has
participated in several telenovelas internationally and nationally, has also participated in
several reality shows, which has catapulted her more to fame, she is also known for
staying young and shiny despite her advanced age.

3. Look at the following sentences taken from the reading and


say how are they similar or different?

They are similar because they use verbs in the past to refer to what they have
achieved "has been".
4. Do you know when in the past they did these things? What
tense are they written in?
They are written in the present perfect.
5. Explain in your own words, the use of present perfect tense
in the sentences in activity 3.
This verb tense is used for an action or situation that started
in the past and continues in the present or has not been
completed.

Ej: I have worked hard  this week.


It has rained a lot this year.
We haven't seen her today.

The most exciting experience I have had in my life was when


I received the news that I had stayed at the University, it was
a unique feeling because I knew that this was the way to
start my future, I would not change that feeling for anything
in the world.
