Author’s Corner
Read this brief biography of Robert Burns and find out how his life is related to his
poem.

Robert Burns (1759-1796) was born in Alloway,

Scotland on January 25, 1759. He was the first of
William and Agnes Burnes’ seven children. His father, a
tenant farmer, educated his children at home. Most of
Burns’ poems were written in Scots. They document
and celebrate traditional Scottish culture, expressions of
farm life, and class and religious distinctions. He is also
well known for the over three hundred songs he wrote
which celebrate love, friendship, work, and drink with
often hilarious and tender sympathy. The volume Scots
Musical Museum contained well-known songs as “My Luv

is Like a Red Red Rose” and “Auld Lang Syne.” At age 37, Burns died from heart
disease on July 21, 1796, when his wife Jean Armour also gave birth to his last
son, Maxwell. Even today, he is often referred to as the National Bard of Scotland.

Auld Lang Syne Lyrics

English Version

Should old acquaintance be forgot,

and never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear,

for auld lang syne,
we’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

And surely you’ll buy your pint cup!

and surely I’ll buy mine !
And we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

We two have run about the slopes,

and picked the daisies fine ;
But we’ve wandered many a weary foot,
since auld lang syne.

We two have paddled in the stream,

from morning sun till dine ;
But seas between us broad have roared
since auld lang syne.

And there’s a hand my trusty friend!

And give us a hand o’ thine !
And we’ll take a right good-will draught,
for auld lang syne.
