What are Shuttle and Rotation
Programs?

These are the management programs designed to

prevent the development of resistance to anti-

coccidials thereby resulting in better gut health

and feed utilization by birds.

Principle of Shuttles:
 The best drug is used for each phase of the grow-out
 Most suitable drug is used for starter, while another
drug is used for grower and finisher
 Drug withdrawal period is the most important
consideration for drugs that will be used in finisher
feeds
Principle of Rotation:

 Rotation means that a conscious decision is made to

change the drug(s) used at a given time in the future i.e.

every four months

 Rotations are only possible if drugs with different

chemistries follow each other. Ionophores should be

followed by non-ionophores
Ionophores & Non-Ionophores
Ionophores Non-Ionophoes /
Chemical Drugs
Monensin Amprolium
Narasin Nicarbazin
Salinomycin Zoalene
Lasalocid Clopidol
Maduramicin Robenidine
Decoquinate
Diclazuril
Anti-coccidial Type Advantages & Disadvantages
Ionophores Slow development of resistance as compared to
synthetics, but reduced efficacy over time. Cross
resistance can occur to anti-coccidials in the same class.

Synthetic Highly effective but if overdosed, resistance can develop

quickly.
(Chemicals/Non-Ionophoes)

Synthetic-Ionophore Highly effective but if overdosed, resistance can develop

Combination

Vaccine Give in-feed anti-coccidials a rest and replace wild

coccidia strains with vaccinal oocysts that are sensitive
to in-feed anti-coccidials. Initial setback in performance
can be managed with judicious use of an ionophore after
bird develop vaccine-induced immunity against
coccidiosis.
