This Malaysian Standard was developed by the Technical Committee on Paints and
Varnishes under the authority of the Chemical and Materials Industry Standards Committee.
This Malaysian Standard is the third revision of MS 134, Specification for latex emulsion paint
for exterior and interior use (Second revision).
This Malaysian Standard cancels and replaces MS 134:1989, Specification for latex emulsion
paint for exterior and interior use (Second revision).
Compliance with a Malaysian Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal
obligations.
1. Scope
This Malaysian Standard specifies an air-drying latex emulsion paint including textured finish
suitable for exterior and interior use on masonry surfaces including concrete, brick, stucco,
concrete block and asbestos cement shingles and sidings, and for recoating of previously
painted surface provided the surface is in sound condition and suitable for receiving such a
coating. It may also be used on suitably primed metal and wood surfaces.

Annex A
(normative)
A1. General
The test screens only the Trentepohlia odorata species for algal resistance in emulsion paints
for decorative purposes to be used on buildings in Malaysia. It has been found that this
species predominates on surfaces of most local buildings, besides being the first to colonise
such surfaces.

A2. Apparatus
A2.1 Sterilised petri dish, ca. 90 mm diameter.
A2.2 Shelf with fluorescent lighting, such that the light intensity incident to the test
surface is 1 000 lux to 1 400 lux. This can be done by installing 2 tubes of 40-watt cool
fluorescent lamp, ca. 25 cm apart at horizontal level and ca. 60 cm above the test surface.
A3. Reagents
A3.1 Sterilised bold basal medium
A4. Procedure
All chemicals, water and non-disposable containers and tools used for the test shall be
sterilised by an autoclave under the pressure of 1.2 kgf/cm² to 1.5 kgf/cm² for 20 min.
Two coats of paint under test are applied to the interior bottom and vertical surface of the petri
dish. The first coat of paint is allowed to dry overnight before the second coat is painted.
The paint film prepared according to A4.1 is allowed to stand at room temperature for 3 days
followed by 168 h UV ageing in accordance with ASTM G 154. The following operating cycles
shall be used.
a) 8 h – lights on at 55 ºC
After the ageing, allow the dish to stand at room temperature for 24 h.
Homogenise the algae culture with a tissue grinder shortly before inoculation. Adjust the
concentration of the culture to 0.3 mg/l ± 0.1 mg/l chlorophyll with bold basal medium.
Add 2 ml of the algae culture into the petri dish. Spread the culture to the painted surface as
evenly as possible. Add the same quantity of algae culture into a blank petri dish to serve as
control for the test. The same lot of algae culture is used for inoculating both the test sample
and the blank dish. Replace the dish with cover after the inoculation. Subsequent operations
are done on both the sample under test and on the blank.
Licensed to JS LIM ARCHITECT / Downloaded on : 13-Sep-2013 12:02:01 PM / Single user license only, copying and networking prohibited
The petri dish is subject to exposure under fluorescent lighting at room temperature. Lighting
cycle is 12 h on followed by 12 h off. Keep the paint film moistened by adding drops of diluted
bold basal medium (one part bold basal medium to three parts distilled water by volume)
periodically. Normally this will require not more than 1 ml per two days. The petri dish is kept
covered during the exposure period.
The exposure period is eight weeks from the day of inoculation of algae culture.
If no increase in growth is observed in the blank dish, the results are invalid and the test shall
be repeated.
NOTE. The test is conducted in duplicate for both the paint sample and the blank.
