DEVELOPMENT OF MALAYSIAN STANDARDS

The Department of Standards Malaysia (STANDARDS MALAYSIA) is the national

standardisation and accreditation body.

The main function of the Department is to foster and promote standards,

standardisation and accreditation as a means of advancing the national economy,
promoting industrial efficiency and development, benefiting the health and safety of
the public, protecting the consumers, facilitating domestic and international trade and
furthering international cooperation in relation to standards and standardisation.

Malaysian Standards are developed through consensus by committees which

comprise of balanced representation of producers, users, consumers and others with
relevant interests, as may be appropriate to the subject in hand. To the greatest
extent possible, Malaysian Standards are aligned to or are adoption of international
standards. Approval of a standard as a Malaysian Standard is governed by the
Standards of Malaysia Act 1996 (Act 549). Malaysian Standards are reviewed
periodically. The use of Malaysian Standards is voluntary except in so far as they are
made mandatory by regulatory authorities by means of regulations, local by-laws or
any other similar ways.

The Department of Standards appoints SIRIM Berhad as the agent to develop

Malaysian Standards. The Department also appoints SIRIM Berhad as the agent for
distribution and sale of Malaysian Standards.

FOREWORD

This Malaysian Standard was developed by the Technical Committee on Paints and
Varnishes under the authority of the Chemical and Materials Industry Standards Committee.

This Malaysian Standard is the third revision of MS 134, Specification for latex emulsion paint
for exterior and interior use (Second revision).

Major modifications in this revision are as follows:

a) incorporation of algicide in clause on composition;

b) requirements for fineness and drying time have been changed;

Licensed to JS LIM ARCHITECT / Downloaded on : 13-Sep-2013 12:02:01 PM / Single user license only, copying and networking prohibited

c) incorporation of requirement on resistance to algal growth; and

d) incorporation of Annex A on determination of algal resistance.

This Malaysian Standard cancels and replaces MS 134:1989, Specification for latex emulsion
paint for exterior and interior use (Second revision).

Compliance with a Malaysian Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal
obligations.

b) The film shall, having due regard to its other properties and the particular colour
concerned, show good colour retention and resistance to chalking and discoloration.

5.2.7 Resistance to accelerated weathering

In lieu of the natural weathering test, the accelerated weathering test as prescribed in 6.2.2
may be performed as a more expedient method. However, in case of any dispute, the natural

shall be no paint film removal from the substrate.

6. Testing
6.1 Test sample

In the absence of any specific agreement on the method of sampling, it shall be in

accordance with MS 133: Part A1.

6.2 Test methods

The tests shall be conducted in accordance with the applicable methods indicated in Table 1
and as specified in the relevant clauses.

6.2.1 Resistance to natural weathering

Apply a coat of the paint under test by brushing on the smooth side of an asbestos-free
cement panel to give a wet film thickness of approximate microns. Allow to dry at normal
drying conditions for 2 h. Apply second coat of the paint in same manner. Allow the panel to
age for seven days at room temperature. Expose the panel to natural weathering in
accordance with MS 133: Part F6 for a period of 12 months on 45° angle exposure rack
facing south at an approved exposure site. Examine the exposed coated panel for compliance
with 5.2.6.

weathering in accordance with MS 133: Part F8.

7. Packaging and marking

7.1 Packaging

The materials shall be supplied in sound, clean and strong containers that shall not be
adversely affected by the contents.

7.2 Marking
Licensed to JS LIM ARCHITECT / Downloaded on : 13-Sep-2013 12:02:01 PM / Single user license only, copying and networking prohibited

The following information shall be legibly and indelibly marked on each container:

a) name of the material and colour as appropriate;

b) name of the supplier or manufacturer or recognised trademark, if any;

c) volume of the material, in litres;

d) the lot or batch number;

Annex A
(normative)

Determination of algal resistance

A1. General
The test screens only the Trentepohlia odorata species for algal resistance in emulsion paints
for decorative purposes to be used on buildings in Malaysia. It has been found that this
species predominates on surfaces of most local buildings, besides being the first to colonise
such surfaces.
Licensed to JS LIM ARCHITECT / Downloaded on : 13-Sep-2013 12:02:01 PM / Single user license only, copying and networking prohibited

A2. Apparatus
A2.1 Sterilised petri dish, ca. 90 mm diameter.

A2.2 Shelf with fluorescent lighting, such that the light intensity incident to the test
surface is 1 000 lux to 1 400 lux. This can be done by installing 2 tubes of 40-watt cool
fluorescent lamp, ca. 25 cm apart at horizontal level and ca. 60 cm above the test surface.

A2.3 Autoclave, 1.2 kgf/cm² to 1.5 kgf/cm².

A3. Reagents
A3.1 Sterilised bold basal medium

A3.2 Algae culture, predominantly Trentepohlia odorata, maintained in bold basal

medium.

A4. Procedure
All chemicals, water and non-disposable containers and tools used for the test shall be
sterilised by an autoclave under the pressure of 1.2 kgf/cm² to 1.5 kgf/cm² for 20 min.

A4.1 Preparation of paint film

Two coats of paint under test are applied to the interior bottom and vertical surface of the petri
dish. The first coat of paint is allowed to dry overnight before the second coat is painted.

A4.2 Pre-ageing of paint film

The paint film prepared according to A4.1 is allowed to stand at room temperature for 3 days
followed by 168 h UV ageing in accordance with ASTM G 154. The following operating cycles
shall be used.

a) 8 h – lights on at 55 ºC

b) 4 h – condensation on and lights off at 45 ºC

© STANDARDS MALAYSIA 2007 – All rights reserved 7
MS 134:2007

c) Light source – UV fluorescent lamps B313

After the ageing, allow the dish to stand at room temperature for 24 h.

A4.3 Inoculation with algae culture

Homogenise the algae culture with a tissue grinder shortly before inoculation. Adjust the
concentration of the culture to 0.3 mg/l ± 0.1 mg/l chlorophyll with bold basal medium.

Add 2 ml of the algae culture into the petri dish. Spread the culture to the painted surface as
evenly as possible. Add the same quantity of algae culture into a blank petri dish to serve as
control for the test. The same lot of algae culture is used for inoculating both the test sample
and the blank dish. Replace the dish with cover after the inoculation. Subsequent operations
are done on both the sample under test and on the blank.
Licensed to JS LIM ARCHITECT / Downloaded on : 13-Sep-2013 12:02:01 PM / Single user license only, copying and networking prohibited

A4.4 Exposure under light

The petri dish is subject to exposure under fluorescent lighting at room temperature. Lighting
cycle is 12 h on followed by 12 h off. Keep the paint film moistened by adding drops of diluted
bold basal medium (one part bold basal medium to three parts distilled water by volume)
periodically. Normally this will require not more than 1 ml per two days. The petri dish is kept
covered during the exposure period.

The exposure period is eight weeks from the day of inoculation of algae culture.

A5. Interpretation of results

At the end of the test, compare the growth intensity of algae on the paint sample with that of
the blank control. The paint sample is deemed to pass the test if the algae culture is killed, as
evidenced by the bleaching of the green colour, against the increase in algal growth in the
blank petri dish.

If no increase in growth is observed in the blank dish, the results are invalid and the test shall
be repeated.

NOTE. The test is conducted in duplicate for both the paint sample and the blank.
