MODULE 4 Numbers
Introduction:
In this lesson, you will learn how to use place value in reading
and writing numbers up to 1000 in symbols and in words. It will help
develop your numeracy skills and lead you to more understanding of
numbers.

Objectives:
Learners should be able to…
Reads and writes numbers up to 1000 in symbols and in words.

Take a look:
Marlo took a vacation on his grandparent’s
poultry farm. Every morning he helps her
grandfather count the egg laid by the chicken
and place it in the tray. He counted the eggs and it was 1212.
How many eggs did they collected all?
Answer: 1,212

A place value chart can help you read large numbers. For
example, study the place values of the digits of 1,212 in the chart.

In symbols, the number is written as 1,212.

In word form, it is written as one thousand, two hundred twelve.


The expanded form of 1,212 is 1,000+200+10+2.

Another Examples:
Give the place value and the value of each underlined
digit.

In Symbols In Words

Remember:
• We write numbers from left to right.
• In writing a 3 digit number, we write the numerals according to
their place value.
• Numbers can be written either in symbols or in words. Take note of
the hyphens (-) in number words from 21 to 99. Write hyphens in
between the tens and the ones.

• We can use 0, 1,2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, in reading and writing numbers.
