Using expressions with tener


A number of useful expressions use the verb tener in Spanish where in English the verb ‘to have’ does not
feature.
Tener la intención de + infinitive to intend to
Tener ganas de + infinitive to feel like, to want to
Tener suerte to be lucky
Tener razón to be right
Tener prisa to be in a hurry

Remember that tener is irregular in the following tenses:


tener (present) tener (preterite) tener (future)
tengo tuve tendré
tienes tuviste tendrás
tiene tuvo tendrá
tenemos tuvimos tendremos
tenéis tuvisteis tendréis
tienen tuvieron tendrán
