Letter symbols that are used to shorten a word in writing are

called abbreviations.

An abbreviation /əˌbrēvēˈāSH(ə)n/ are letter symbols or

contractions used as shortened forms of words and phrases for
easier writing and to save space. Abbreviated words are also used
with period marks.

Here is how we abbreviate the months of the year.

Month Abbreviation
January Jan.
February Feb.
March Mar.
April Apr.
August Aug.
September Sept.
October Oct.
November Nov.
December Dec.

8
Since months of the year are proper nouns, we use the upper
case or capital letters when we abbreviate or shorten them.
May, June, July are excluded because these words are short
only and need not be abbreviated.
The days of the week are long words too. Sometimes they are
easier to write when we shorten them to their abbreviation.

The abbreviations are:

Day Abbreviation
Sunday Sun.
Monday Mon.
Tuesday Tues.
Wednesday Wed.
Thursday Thurs.
Friday Fri.
Saturday Sat.
