Welcome to the English 3 Self-Learning Module on Consonant Digraphs ch


and sh.

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed, and


reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st-century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the

LESSON

Before we start with our lesson for today, try to name the
following pictures:

Will you name the first two letters in the words shell and shoes,
chair and children? How about the last two letters in the words
toothbrush and wash, beach and match?
Today, we are going to learn about initial and final digraphs.
These are /sh/ and /ch/ digraphs.
Digraphs are two letters and when combined can produce
one sound. Common consonant digraphs include /ch/ and /sh/.
Words like shade, shelf, ship, shoulder, and shut have initial /sh/
consonant digraph, while the words like bush, crash, sash, rush, and
wish have final /sh/ digraph.

Let us read the following sets of words and analyze what


digraph each set contains.

1. shirt, shop, share, sharpen, shampoo,


What consonant digraph did you recite?
Those words have /sh/ consonant digraph!
Where are they written?
They are all written at the beginning of every word.

2. fresh, punish, rush, smash, crash,


What consonant digraph did you recite?
Those words have /sh/ consonant digraph!
Where are they written?
They are all written at the end of every word.

Arrange the jumbled letters inside the parentheses in the


correct order to form the word that is being described in each
number. Then, spell the word.

3. (slehl) means a hard body covering of crab, shrimp.
Shell is the correct answer. It is a one- syllable word spelled as
shell.

4. (nishfi) means to come to an end.


Finish is the correct answer. It is a two- syllable word spelled as
fin-ish, finish.

A group of two successive letters that represent a single sound


is a digraph. Another example is /ch/. Words like chain, cheese,
chick, child, chop have the initial consonant digraph /ch/. While
the words like march, reach touch, speech, coach, have final
consonant digraph /ch/.

Let’s do the thumbs up if the following set of words has the


initial /ch/ digraph sound, and thumbs down if it has the final /ch/
digraph sound.

1. catch, patch, match


The words catch, patch and match have the /ch/ final
digraph.

2. chocolate, change, chunk


The words chocolate, change and chunk have the initial /ch/
digraph.

Arrange the jumbled letters inside the parentheses in the correct


order to form the word that is being described in each number.
Then spell each word.

3. (rildchen) means young persons


The answer is children. It is a two-syllable word spelled as chil-
dren, children.

4. (chtea)means to guide
The answer is teach. It is a one-syllable word spelled as teach,
teach.
