CHAPTER - 2
INTRODUCTION
Building stone is one of the major being used in infrastructural projects,
mainly as an aggregate in concreting. In addition, it also finds its application in
stone masonry constructions, as railway ballast, filler material. Water Treatment
Plants as filter media etc. Depending on the size of the material, building stones
are being classified as size stones, coarse aggregate, fine aggregates etc. Even the
fine powder, which is the resultant of crushing of building stone, finds its usage as
finishing coat for black top roads. A mining feasibility study is an evaluation of a
proposed mining project to determine whether the mineral resources can be mined
economically. Mining makes an important contribution to the regional or national
economy. Prefeasibility Studies are an early stage analysis of a potential mining
project cost. Feasibility studies are required throughout the pre-production stage of
every mining project. The PFR conducted to help sort out relevant alternatives.
The objectives are following.
Name of the Project: Granite (Building Stone) Quarry of Mr. P.P. Veeran,
Managing Partner of Cherupara Granites
Location of the Project: The mining lease area is situating 1.2914 Hectares in
Survey No. 8/2 and 8/2-18 in Vetillapara village, Ernad Taluk, Malappuram
District, Kerala
The quarrying industry, have an important role in the local economy for many
years. It is an age old economic activity, though its nature and form have been
changing over passage of time in many sources of rural employment and it
promotes sustainable development by creating more employment opportunities
especially in the rural areas.
As total of 10 people are employed in this mine. It will create more employment
opportunities for local people by directly and indirectly (though marginally).

There is a large demand for granite building stone for building construction.
The proposed mining project will accomplish its requirement for the
exterior projects. Polished slabs and tiles are usually used in countertops,

Project will create direct and indirect employment opportunities within the
surrounding region. One mines manager cum engineer shall be in charge of the site
operations. The employment opportunities are being created in connection with
the quarrying activities and the local people are being employed for the non -
technical activities under the direction of mining engineers and supervisors.
About 10 people will get direct employment and many people will also be
affected indirectly and directly and employed with allied and related industries,
such as transportation, maintenance etc. In this project including workers like
mine mate, drilling, cleaning, blasting helpers, quarry in charge person, quarry
supervisor, heavy equipment operator and mechanic, tipper mechanic etc.
The rock produced from the quarry is transported to the Crusher unit. The
aggregate produced is sold to the contractors and to the consumers which is finally
consumed locally for road (State Highway & National Highway) & building
construction works. Fine Material is also sold for the utilization of the hollow
block/ solid block manufactures.

SITE ANALYSIS
Site analysis is the process of surveying and studying the existing
environment and how it will influence the building design, structure and layout of
the site. It is one of the most important steps of architectural design process. It is a
predesign research activity which focuses on existing and potential conditions on
and around the site. The typical site analysis includes the site location and size,
neighborhood context, zoning, legal aspects, geology, physiography, hydrology,
soils, vegetation, wildlife, climate, nature, density, sensory and any other factor
deemed appropriate for the particular site.
4.1. Connectivity
4.4. Topography
The quarry lease area has a rugged topography with small hillock ranges.
The area is located on the southern side of the hillock. The area is covered with
Granite building stone capped by Lateritic soil and exposed rock. The highest
elevation in the area is 245 m MSL and lowest elevation is 190 m MSL. Slope of
the formation is towards NE direction. Ground water occurs under water table
conditions in Laterite and Semi – confined to confined conditions in fractured
crystalline rocks
The climate is generally hot and humid. March and April months are the hottest
and January and February months are the coldest. The maximum temperatures
ranges from 28.9 to 36.2°C and the minimum temperatures range from 17.0 to
23.4°C. The temperature starts rising from January and reaches the peak in the
month of March and April and then decreases during the monsoon month and
again rising from September onwards. The wind is predominant from east as well
as west during morning and evening hours. The wind speed is more during
December to February months. It ranges from 2.9 to 7.2 km per hour. The relative
humidity ranges from 84 to 94 % during morning hours. The humidity is more
during the peak monsoon months from June to September
Malappuram district has more or less the same climatic conditions prevalent
elsewhere in the State viz. dry season from December to February and hot season
from March to May, the South-West monsoon from June to September and the
North-East monsoon from October to December. The normal rainfall of the district
is 2793.3 mm. Out of this, major rainfall contribution is from SW monsoon
followed by the NE monsoon. The South West monsoon is usually very heavy and
nearly 73.5% of the rainfall is received during this season. NE monsoon
contributes nearly 16.4% and March to May summer rain contributes nearly 9.9%
and the balance 0.2% is accounted for during January and February months.

PLANNING
PLANNING BRIEF:
Population Projection:
There will not be any increase in population due to the project. The man power
required shall be employed from the local areas. The drivers / truck operators also
shall be engaged from local areas. Hence not much influx of population from
outside is anticipated.

MALAPPURAM DISTRICT, KERALA STATE
All the manpower for the project shall be employed from the local area. Thus,
there shall not be influx of people into the region; therefore, no increase in the
population is envisaged during the period of the operations. The operations are also
small scale. Hence, infrastructure demand both in the form of physical and social
infrastructure, in terms of physical infrastructure will not be very demanding.
However, the project would raise the economic status of the people in the region
thus the social infrastructure like education, health and hygiene, sports, etc. would
be quite demanding. The firm thus commits to support the local community in the
field of Health & Hygiene, Basic education, Education of girl child, Sports,
renewable energy etc. thereby strengthening the social infrastructure of the region.

PROPOSED INFRASTRUCUTRE
The project shall generate 10 direct and Equal indirect employment to the local
people. Hence, the activity will contribute to the improvement of income status of
the local people. The quarry project will also improve infrastructure facilities,
eventually leading to the overall development of the area, resulting in the
improvement of standard of life of local population.
6.5. CER fund - The Project proponent undertakes to spend Rs 1, 50,000 per
Annum, 2 % of the total project cost and to take up CER w works Under LSG.
Drinking water shall be made available at all times to the mine workers. This will
be sourced by water tankers from the bore well outside the quarry lease area, A
water purifier shall be installed to provide safe drinking water.
It is expected to recover 7500 tonnes top soil during quarrying this area. This top
soil shall be used in afforestation/ Green Belt/Safety barrier all along the periphery
of the quarry lease area. No other waste is envisaged from the operations
CHAPTER 7
REHABILITATION AND RESETTLEMENT
The Quarry will be commenced immediately after getting the statutory approvals
from Government authorities. Total cost of the project is about Rs 75 lakhs.
This project will be one of the major economic activities resulting in provide
livelihood and have positive impact on socio economic life of people living
in nearby villages thereby contributing to the overall governments, by way
of royalties, taxes, cess, DMF etc. The mining operations shall be providing
employment opportunities approximately 10 persons directly and equal
person indirectly. The company plan to provide good support to the local
schools and provide scholarship for High school Girls students
Health care, Sanitation, Sport facilities etc shall be improved on account of
the facilities being planned as part of CER works by the company.
The mined out pit at the end of the mining operations will be developed into
a pond Pisiculutre that could provide livelihood for a few villages. The water
could be used for agriculture and various other purposes.
