Digital Bridges Offers Digital Literacy Classes to Milledgeville Residents

Milledgeville, Ga. – Bridging the Basics Digital Literacy Classes are offered twice a week at the
Mary Vinson Memorial Library and Digital Bridges and are from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The Basics 101 class takes place on Tuesday at the Mary Vinson Memorial Library and focuses
on the very basics of the computer. This class will allow the student to be more comfortable with
using the mouse and keyboard. The last Basics 101 class of 2010 will take place on December 7.

The Basics 102, 103, 104, and 105 are specialty courses and are held at Digital Bridges on
Thursdays. These classes focus on PowerPoint, Word Documents, Internet and Email, and Excel
Spreadsheets. In order to attend these specialty classes, the student needs to have completed the
Basics 101 class or have a similar familiarity with computers. Each class session will cover the
same material, so if a student misses one class they can easily attend another and receive the
same information. There are two more Basics 104 (Excel Spreadsheets) classes remaining in
2010. These classes will take place on December 2 and December 9.

The classes are taught by Georgia College student Katie Hanna. She is the first Knight
Community Service Scholar to work at Digital Bridges.

“These classes became a clear need in the community and fit exactly with what I wanted to do as
a career later since I am a special education major here at Georgia College,” Hanna said.

All classes are free and open to the public. Students do not need to register to attend these classes
since they are filled up on a first come first serve basis.

“Some (students) want to learn about computers, some want to communicate via email, some
want to get jobs, and some just want to learn something,” Hanna said. “We have a great time and
learn a lot at a slower pace so that everyone is on the same page and understands what we are
doing.”

Classes covering additional topics will be offered in 2011. For more information, please call
Digital Bridges at (478) 387-0242.

Digital Bridges is a Georgia College & State University venture with funding from the John S.
