(TechTip) Tablet UI Recovery
Tablet UI Recovery
We have developed a Tablet UI Recovery Program to aid in recovering of your Tablet User Interface [UI] when
is locked up like the sample image below, or black, etc. Included with this Tech Tip is a driver and program
used to reimage your UI. Using these tools will allow you to recover your customers Tablet User Interface [UI]
while onsite and takes only a few minutes to complete the reimaging.
Prep:
1. You must purchase a USB 2.0 or 3.0 A Male to A Female Extension Cable USB cable

2. Unplug the Tablet UI USB Cable; then plug one end of your USB A Male to A Female Extension
Cable to your PC, and the other end to the Table USB Cable and turn copier device on
3. Using the Control Panel select the Device Manager and look for the newly installed USB
Device, see blue box

4. Right click your mouse button and select “Update Driver Software, see red box
5. a. Point to the location of the extracted file using the Browse window in the popup, see red
box in Figure1. Windows may tell you the best driver software is already installed

Ignore the Caution Symbol [“!”] displayed on the CDC ECM device. and the USB Device
(VID_XXX). As long as the drivers exist the install and update were successful. It will work
without it displayed.

UI Image FW
Provided in the table below is the UI Image file that you need to download from the Firmware
Section of GSPN or in the Downloads Section of BTSP. You can see by the column marked
“Series” that the MX7 Color and Black & White version share the same UI Image.
Similarly, the MX4 Series shares the same image file for the whole platform.
Note: It is important to try to match the Image File as close as is possible to the Base FW of the
device. So, long as the device is on the D6 [e.g. V6.D6.08] platform you should be able to
recover the UI and boot up normally.
However, it is possible to get an S5-3111 after the UI Recovery if the Base FW is very old
e.g. V6.A6.XX. You will have to do an HDD Recovery to synchronize the Main Board with
the new image on the UI.
Provided below are the part numbers for the three UI’s for our Tablet devices in the unlikely event
you cannot recover the tablet:
Note: Download and unzip the Image to your desktop, so it is ready to be installed.

UI Recovery:
1. Launch PhoenixSuit Tool. No Device Attached Yet is a normal condition at this point

Using the Browse Field in the below illustration [see blue box], browse to the .img {UI Image File} that
you downloaded [e.g. SL-7600LX; V5.18.03.83.00_16030117.img. Obviously unzipped .img first.
4. Power off the Tablet Device [UI] with the Hard Power Switch
5. Unplug the UI’s USB Cable from the USB Hub board located directly under the UI
4. Attach the A Female portion of the USB Extension Cable to the UI’s USB Cable that was unplugged
in the above step [#4]
5. Attach USB Extension Cable end to the USB Port on your Laptop but DO NOT fully insert, just let it
hang off the end of the port
6. Turn the Main Hard Power Switch “ON”; then wait 5 seconds and then press and hold the UI’s Soft
Power Switch “ON” until the UI blinks a white screen 3 times; it usually takes 5 to 20 seconds for
the white screen to blink 3 times.
7. Once the UI finished its third white blink; then fully insert the USB Extension Cable end to the USB
Port on your Laptop. The upgrade will be started automatically. No other interaction is needed.
9. As the unit is shutting down, disconnect the USB extension cable and reconnect OPE USB Cable to
the USB Hub board. Finally, update the firmware on the device if the Image File downloaded does
not match the Base FW of the device.
