UNDERSTANDING MATTER AND ENERGY -
PROPERTY OF LIQUIDS AND SOLIDS

BIG IDEAS Materials that exist as liquids and solids

have specific properties.
Liquids and solids interact in different
ways.
SCIENTIFIC CONCEPT - ABSORB & REPEL
- Water is a type of liquid, liquids can move and take its
shape.
- Some solid materials contain pores (holes) and fibres
allowing for the liquid to become trapped within the solid
item when in contact.
- Solid Items that do not contain these pores or fibres in turn
repel liquids such as water, collecting nothing.
- The size of these pores and fibres within the solid material
will affect the amount of liquid it soaks in.
OVERALL & SPECFIC EXPECTATIONS
2. investigate the properties of and interactions among liquids and
solids;
3. demonstrate an understanding of the properties of liquids and solids..

2.1 follow established safety procedures during

science and technology investigations (e.g.,
clean up spills as soon as they happen) 2.4 use scientific inquiry/experimentation
skills to investigate liquids and solids in
terms of their capacity for buoyancy
2.2 investigate the and/or absorption
properties of liquids and
solids
3.2 describe the properties of solids (e.g., they
maintain their shape and cannot be poured) and
liquids (e.g., they take the shape of the
container they are in and can be poured)

MATERIALS WE WILL NEED

Four cups of water A sponge A piece of paper towel

Food colouring (optional) A piece of tin foil A piece of plastic wrap

Adding colour may make the visuals
more distinct for students
HEALTH AND SAFETY

As our experiment involves liquids,

gloves should be worn at all times,
keeping hands away from mouth or
eyes

Goggles should be worn at all times, to

prevent touching of the eyes or any
substance getting in the eyes

Ask for teacher or a adult

supervisor to help clean any
spillage
PROCESS AND STEPS

PROCESS AND STEPS VIDEO
OBSERVATIONS & RESULTS

WHAT DO YOU SEE? WHAT IS HAPPENING?

I notice that all the solid materials
After 60 seconds, neither the tin foil or
presented are flat and thin, but the
plastic wrap absorb any water., they
sponge is thicker. The solid materials
were floating in it instead. The paper
now are submerged in water.
towel managed to absorb some, leaving
a bit of water behind, but the sponge
absorbed it all.
WHAT INFERENCES CAN YOU MAKE?
I think that maybe thickness or size of certain solids
does impact the amount of absorption. If the paper was
thicker, it would have absorbed more or absorb as much
as the sponge
QUESTIONS
Why did the
sponge absorb
so much
water? 1
Does the liquid What other

poured into?
3 How much of the
liquid goes back
into the cup
after squeezing
it out? Is it the
same?
CONCLUSION
This science experiment was successful as
half of the solid materials used were able to
absorb liquid while the others repelled liquid.
Students were able to observe one of many
interactions between solids and liquids.
Pouring the liquid into a cup students were
able to also identify that liquids do take
shape, as well as grasp the definition of
absorption and repelling. Student were also
able to notice the pores in the solid materials
like the sponge and fibres from the paper
towel which help hold the liquid.
RESOURCES
I got the idea for this experiment from prior experience from
my childhood as well as: LITTLE BINS LITTLE HANDS

WHAT DID I LEARN?
I refreshed my knowledge on absorption and states of
matter.

I learned that paper towels in comparison to sponges

absorb less and this is because of pores and holes being
the reason behind absorption.

I was able to visually observe the cause and effects

between the interaction of a solid and a liquid.

I learned how to set up a science experiment that is age

appropriate, respects the curriculum and is grade
centred.

I learned to be a scientist today :)
