a. Tittle
Lorentz Force

OBJECTIVE

1. Students are able to formulate problems, formulate hypotheses, and

determine the variables to be investigated.
2. Students are able to design and carry out investigation activities.
3. Students are able to describe the magnetic force in an electric current
wire.

1
b. Short Information

Gambar 8.1 Percobaan gaya magnet

Figure 8.1 shows a series of magnetic force experiments consisting of a voltage source
(battery), switch, foil (electrically current wire), a U magnet, a battery holder, a connecting
cable, and a support as a foil holder. If the circuit is assembled correctly and the switch is turned
ON, the aluminum foil will move / deviate.

c. Instruction
1. Assemble the tools as shown in Figure 8.1 which consists of 2 batteries, a switch, 15 cm
aluminum foil connected by a cable!

2. Position the aluminum foil between the two U magnetic poles as shown in Figure 8.1!

3. Close the switch so that electric current flows from the battery through the aluminum foil
(direction of current flows from East to West). Observe the movements that occur in aluminum
foil!

4. Change the direction of the current by moving the positive to negative connecting wire! (the
direction of the current flows from West to East)

5. Record the results of the investigation in the investigation results table!

6. Repeat steps 1 to 5 using aluminum foil of different lengths (20 cm).

7. Repeat steps 1 to 5 using a larger U magnet.

8. Repeat steps 1 to 5 increasing the number of batteries to 4 batteries.

d. Questions
1. How does aluminum foil move in a magnetic field when an electric current is applied?

2
2. In which direction does the aluminum foil move / divert when the current flows from
East to West? Why is that?
3. In which direction does the aluminum foil move / divert when the current flows from
West to East? Why is that?
