ENGAGE The story of the Traveler and the King

Once upon a time, there was a king named King Kilometer who was
imprisoned in a secluded place. A traveler named Maxwell saw the King. But
then, the King couldn’t speak because his mouth was covered. When
Maxwell approached the King, he saw this written password in the padlock.

Password:
“You need to convert 2.5 kilometers into meter.”
NOTE: 1 kilometer = 1 000 meter

In order to release the King from being imprisoned, he needs to solve the
problem.
Answer:
The password of the padlock is 2500. Since 1 kilometer is equal to 1000
meter and our given is 2.5 kilometers. All we need to do is to multiply
2.5 to 1000 to convert the kilometer into meter.
EXPLORE Guide Questions:
1. What is asked in the given situation?
2. What is the given?
3. What do you think is the applicable operations to be used in the
problem?
4. What is the possible solution?
EXPLAIN I. Converting measurement from Metric to Metric
In practice, it is often necessary to convert one metric measurement to
another unit—this happens frequently in the medical, scientific, and technical
fields, where the metric system is commonly used.

In the metric system, the length, weight and volume, have one basic unit of
measure: meter (m), gram (g), and liter (L) respectively.

A prefix is a power-of-10 exponent or multiplier that precedes the unit. To

illustrate what is meant by a prefix, let us take the standard unit for mass in
the metric system - the kilogram. In the term kilogram, kilo is the prefix while
gram is the unit.

Here are the common prefixes used in the Metric System:

PREFIX SYMBOL FACTOR
kilo k 1000
hecto h 100
deca da 10
deci d 1/10
centi c 1/100
milli m 1/1000

For example:
1 kilometer (km) = 1000 meters (m) or 1m = 1/1000km
1 milligram (mg) = 1/1000 gram (g) or 1000mg = 1g

The teacher will discuss two (2) methods for converting metric to metric units.
A. Converting Metric Units Using Conversion Factors
A conversion factor uses your knowledge of the relationships between units
to convert from one unit to another. It is a number used to change one set of
units to another, by multiplying or dividing. When a conversion is necessary,
the appropriate conversion factor to an equal value must be used. The
number is usually given as a numerical ratio or fraction that can be used as a
multiplication factor. The ratio is equivalent to 1 where the numerator (top) of
the fraction contains the units of the unit you want to convert while the
denominator contains the old unit you want to convert. Just remember that
you’re converting from one unit to another so cancelling same units would
guide you in how to use your conversion factors.

Here are the steps:

1. Identify the units used.
2. Determine the relationship between the units.
3. Determine the conversion factor (in fraction form). The denominator should
have the same unit as the original measurement.
4. Multiply the original measurement by the conversion factor.

For Example:
Example 1: Convert 4 km to m.
Solution:
1. Identify the units used.
The units are kilometer (km) and meter (m).
2. Determine the relationship between the units.
1 km = 1000m
3. Determine the conversion factor (in fraction form). The denominator should
have the same unit as the original measurement.
1000 m
The conversion factor is
1 km
4. Multiply the original measurement by the conversion factor.
1000 m 4 ×1000 m 4000 m
4 km× = = =4000 m therefore, 4km = 4000m
1 km 1 1

Example 2:
a. Convert 200 gram(g) to centigram (cg)
b. Convert 2400 milliliters (mL) to liters (L)
Solution:
100 cg 200× 100 cg 20000 m
a. 200 g × = = =20000 cg
1g 1 1

1L 2400 ×1 L 2400 L
b. 2400 mL × = = =2.4 L
1000 mL 1000 1000

B. Converting Metric Units By Moving the Decimal Point

One of the advantages of the Metric System, aside from its universality, is
that it uses base 10, which makes conversion from one unit to another much
easier. To multiply or divide a number by multiples of 10, we simply move the
decimal point to the left or to the right.

To remember the proper decimal movement, we need to arrange the prefixes

in the metric number line from largest (kilo) to smallest (milli).

kilo hecto deca deci centi milli

o a

UNIT
(meter, gram, liter)

In converting metric units, we simply move the decimal point.

Example 1: How many decaliters are there in 0.5 deciliters?
Beginning at the base unit deciliter (dl), move the decimal point two (2) places
to the left as the unit is converted from smaller to a larger unit.

kL hL daL L dL cl mL

2 1
0 0. 5
2 1
The result is that 0.5 deciliters = 0.005 decaliters

Example 2: Convert 55 kilograms to grams.

Beginning at the base unit kilograms (kg), move the decimal point three (3)
places to the right as the unit is converted from larger to a smaller unit.

kg hg dag g dg cg mg
1 2 3
5 5. 0 0 0

1 2 3
The result is that 55 kilograms = 55, 000 grams

II. Converting between measurements in the English System

(English to English)

English System it is based on the British Imperial System. Its units evolved
from non-standard units of measures.
While the Metric System simply moves the decimal point to convert between
its measurement prefixes, the English System requires a conversion ratio (or
unit factor) to move between measurements.
A conversion ratio (or unit factor) is a ratio equal to one. This ratio carries the
names of the units to be used in the conversion. It can be used for
conversions within the English and Metric Systems, as well as for
conversions between the systems. The conversion ratio is based upon the
concept of equivalent values. The numerator (top) of the fraction contains the
units of the unit you want to convert to while the denominator contains the old
unit you want to convert. ALL conversion ratios (unit factors) must equal
one!
1 foot
For example: =1
12inches
3 feet
=1
1 yard
Or simply you can just use the Dimensional Analysis Set-up Pattern:
units you want
no . of units you have × =no . of units you want
units you have
Just remember that you’re converting from one unit to another so cancelling
same units would guide you in how to use your conversion factors.
Here are some conversion factors you may use as a guide:
Table of Conversion
QUANTITY UNIT EQUIVALENCE
Length 1 Inch (in) 1/12 ft.
1 Foot (ft) 12 in.
1 Yard (yd) 3 ft.
1 Mile (mi) 5 280 ft.
1 mile (mi) 1760 yards
Weight 1 Ounce (oz) 1/16 lb
1 Pound (lb) 16 oz
1 Ton (t) 2000 lb
Volume 1 tablespoon (tbsp) 3 teaspoons
1 cup (c) 16 tablespoons
1 cup 8 fluid ounces
1 pint (pt) 2 cups
1 quart (qt) 2 pints/ 4 cups
1 gallon (gal) 4 quarts/ 8 pints / 16
cups

For Example:
Example 1. Convert 30 inches to feet.
Solution:
Step 1. Identify the units used.
The units are inches (in) and feet (ft).
Step 2. Determine the relationship between the units.
12 in = 1 ft.
Step 3. Determine the conversion factor.
1 ft
The conversion factor is
12∈¿ ¿
Step 4. Multiply the original measurement by the conversion factor
1 ft
30∈×
30× 1 ft 30 ft therefore 30 in
12∈¿= = =2.5 ft ¿
12 12
= 2.5 ft

Example 2:
a. Convert 1 yard into inches
b. Convert 2.5 pounds to ounces
c. Convert 36 cups to pint
Solution:
3 ft
a. 1 yd × ×12∈ ¿ =1× 3× 12∈¿ 36 inches ¿
1 yd 1 ft
16 oz
b. 2.5 lb= =2.5× 16 oz=40 ounces
1lb
1 pt 36 pt
c. 36 c × = =18 pt
