2021-2022 FALL TERM

HOMEWORK- 1
Due on:27.10.2021

Q1) A layer of water flows down an inclined fixed surface with the veloicty profile shown in
Figure. Find the direction and magnitude of the shear stress that is exerted by water on the fixed
surface for U= 2m/s and h=0.1 m. Take dynamic viscosity of water as =1.1*10-3 N.s/m2.

Q2) A rotating cylinder viscometer shown in Figure. The outer cylinder is fixed and the inner
cylinder is rotated with an angular veloccity =19 rad/s. The inner radius is Ri=8 cm and the
outer radius is Ro=8.3 cm. The space between two l=15 cm long concentric cylinders is filled
with glycerin with viscosity of =0.96 N.s/m2. Assume that the velocity distribution in the gap
to be linear. Neglect the bottom effect.

a) Calculate the shearing stress in a rotating cylinder viscometer shown in Figure.

b) Calculate the torque due to shearing stress.

Q3) A conical shaft is turning with an angular velocity of =50 rad/sec in a rectangular bearing
which is fixed. The gap between shaft and bearing is filled with a kind of oil (Newtonian fluid)
having a dynamic viscosity of ==0.7 N.s/m2.

a) Calculate the torque produced by the side gaps as the inner conical shaft rotates.

b) Calculate the additional viscous torque produced by the flat bottom of the conical shaft.
