ASSIGNMENT

SMITING THE ENEMY

The motif „Smiting the Enemy“ was placed in Ramses

III‘s temple in Medinet Habu on an outer wall next to
the main entrance. Can you say why this particular
placement was important? Why just outside and not
inside the temple?

First Pylon of the temple of Rameses III.

Medinet Habu, Luxor, Egypt

Possible Solution
It was for deterrence against enemies and potential attackers who usually only
saw the temple from the outside. But it was also aimed at the ordinary people,
who could basically only see this early form of „propaganda“ from the outside.

The inside of the temple was usually not accessible to them. Only priests and
religious servants with specific tasks who had previously purified themselves
appropriately (the ancient Egyptian term for is „wab“) were allowed to see the
temples‘ interior walls.
