The morning mist retreats over the glass-smooth surface
of the bay. As the paddle dips, the kayak glides easily
over the water, crystal-clear to the bottom.
As you leave the protected inlet, your journey begins and
a gentle breeze sets the waters dancing.

Description
The Lightning 14 is the perfect boat for day trips in standing water; and was designed
for exploring winding creeks and rivers. Though not as fast as the Lightning 17 and the
Solace 16LT, she paddles beautifully in all conditions.
The smaller sister to our popular “Lightning 17”, this stable multi-chine kayak has similar
positive tracking characteristics while at the same time is amazingly maneuverable. The
lightning 14 features our exclusive QuickLock Connector System TM providing simple,
attractive and very strong joints. Beautifully contoured knee braces accent the
“keyhole” cockpit design giving comfortable knee support for smaller paddlers, while
200 pounders will also find the spacious cockpit to their liking. With two large hatches,
the Lightning 14 is an excellent touring boat whether on open water or drifting down
rivers with up to class III rapids. At 35 lbs, this is a rugged performance boat that is
easily car-topped and will carry weeks of gear. I have paddled this boat in a wide range
of situations and it’s becoming one of my favorites.
Waters Dancing makes the best kit at the best price.

Waters Dancing Lightning 17

Lightning 17: Single sea/touring kayak kit *Cost: $1,210.00 Cdn Funds
Dimensions: 17’ long; 24” beam approx. (plus shipping)
*Building time: 90 hours (approx.) Joints: butt joints over a full size/pattern
*Weight: 45 lbs.

No provincial taxes added, G.S.T applicable to Canadian residents only.

Description
The Lightning 17 is a full sized sea/touring kayak. We know of paddlers who have
packed a month’s gear in her hatches! A good boat for accommodating a larger person
or for long distance paddling. Even smaller paddlers 5’4” and 120 lbs. can handle her.
This kayak has a stable multi chine (three) hull that tracks beautifully. Though in most
cases not necessary; if at some point you decide to install a rudder, we supply rudder
kits (see page six). The Lightning 17 is sleek, rugged, beautiful and fast, an excellent
day paddler. Inexperienced paddlers enjoy the Lightning 17, and if you are an
experienced paddler, you can make her dance.
The Lightning 17 was designed in the winter of 1995 and the prototype was completed
during the summer of 1996. It is our best selling boat to date.
It was designed before we perfected the QuickLock Connector System. We use
traditional butt joints easily assembled over a full size CAD drawn pattern, no measuring
or string lines needed, we’ve made it simple and easy.

Waters Dancing Solace 16LT “Light”

2
Solace 16LT “Light” : Single sea/touring kayak kit
Dimensions: 15’9 ½” long; 23.5” beam *Cost: $1,195.00 Cdn. Funds
*Weight: 39 lbs.
*Building Time: 90 hours (approx.) Joints: QuickLock Connector System
No provincial taxes added, G.S.T. applicable to Canadian residents only. (Plus shipping)
Description
The Solace 16LT light is designed for smaller paddlers (to about 170 lbs.),
who want a more slender hull that rides lower in the water. (However we have had
paddlers up to 6' and 195 lbs. who enjoy paddling this kayak) It has less volume than
the Lightning 17 and is less likely to be blown around in windy conditions. The Solace
complements the Lightning 17 very well; they are a popular combination for a husband
and wife paddling team.
The Solace 16LT is very stable with a multi-chine (four) hull design, that tracks and
turns well. Our exclusive four-chine hull has shaping like a cedar strip or fiberglass
kayak. The strength of the stitch & glue okoume mahogany plywood hull is greater than
that of a cedar strip boat and is also less susceptible to cracking than fiberglass. Waters
Dancing kayaks are 30% lighter and much stiffer than fiberglass hulls.

Waters Dancing Solace 16 XL “Extra”

A deeper, bigger version of the Solace 16 LT ”Light” and Solace 16 EX “Extreme”

Solace 16XL “Extra” : Single sea/touring kayak kit

Dimensions: 16’ long; 23.75” beam

*Weight: 40 lbs. (approximate)
*Building Time: 90 hours (approximate)
Joints: QuickLock connector System
*Cost: $1205.00 Cdn. Funds
No provincial taxes added, G.S.T applicable to Canadian residents only.

The Solace 16 XL “Extra” is like getting the handling of a sports car that carries a load
like a pick-up truck. Just about everyone will love paddling this beautiful boat!
Paddlers from 5’ 3” to 6’ 3” from 105 lbs.- 235 lbs. can easily maneuver their favorite
river, lake or ocean trip with confidence. This is the big brother to the Solace 16 LT
“Light” the XL’s hull has more volume than the Solace 16 LT therefore carries more
gear. Settling into the roomy cockpit is like coming home and you’re ready for any
adventure you can plan.
(Over)

3
Feedback from owner/builders of our craft tell us that beginners will love the sense of
security, stability, maneuverability and speed, while Intermediate and expert paddlers
revel in the shear exhilaration of the performance of the sleekly sculptured hull. Note:
the low deck at the rear of the cockpit. If you want to practice rolling you can do so with
ease.

The Solace series has four chines to give your hull much better shaping than other multi
chine hulls. People that come into our showroom to view our kayaks and canoes are
always amazed at the finely tuned hulls. With shapes as sleek as any you’ll find
anywhere whatever the construction cedar, molded fiberglass or plastic. We are
working very hard to bring you the best boat and kit money can buy!

More chines means narrower panel widths, which means less deflection and greater
strength, than a similar sized hull of the same weight. A rounder hull displaces impact
throughout the hull. Giving better strength than with a hull with defined corners. If you
enjoy wilderness traveling this is a great all round kayak that specializes in
performance.
The Solace 16 XL “Extra” is beautiful, rugged, fast, and as ready as you are for fun and
adventure.

Waters Dancing Trillium 21

Trillium 21: Double/Triple sea/touring kayak kit

Dimensions: 20' 6" long; 29" beam *Weight: 75 lbs. (approx.)
*Building Time: 120 hours (approx.) Joints: QuickLock Connector System
*Cost: $1,850.00 Cdn. Funds
To compare the cost of this kit, add $300.00 Cdn. to other kit manufacturers full kit price.
No provincial taxes added, G.S.T. applicable to Canadian residents only. (Plus shipping)

Description
The sea trials of the Trillium went very well. This kayak is fast, very fast. We designed a
long double/triple that can be paddled and handled without a rudder on day trips. If
you’re planning extended trips on large bodies of water, you will want a rudder kit. Like
all long double sea kayaks the Trillium requires a rudder to make quick turns possible.
The rudder kit is also available from us. (See price list.) The Trillium is intended to be
used as a double kayak. It will carry two paddlers and all their gear (maximum 650 lbs.)
on extended trips, and comes with two seats and two sets of foot-braces. Its narrow
design is intended to give the paddlers better speed with less effort than a wider hull.
Its multi-chine (four) hull captures the imagination and its clean shape helps it slide
through the water with ease.

Waters Dancing Anuri 16

Anuri 16 Performance Plus!

Anuri 16: Single hard-chine sea/touring kayak kit

Dimensions: 15.9” long; 23.25” beam

*Weight: 40 lbs. (approximate)
*Building Time: 90 hours (approximate)
Joints: QuickLock connector System
*Cost: $1185.00 Cdn. Funds plus G.S.T.
No provincial taxes added, G.S.T applicable to Canadian residents only.

The Anuri 16 (pronounced anneree) is a return to our roots. We have integrated the
current technology of the modern stitch and glue kayak with the original designs of the
founder of Waters Dancing, my father, Jim Moore.
The Anuri 16 is a beautiful hard-chine boat with some striking improvements over other
hard-chine kayaks. The hull is a hard-chine with a modified v-shaped bottom. We have
inserted a small flat panel (keel) onto the bottom centerline of the hull. This feature
offers better maneuverability and greater stability than the traditional hard-chine kayak.
It also reduces the width of the bottom panels, thus decreasing the flex and increasing
the hull strength. Another unique feature of this hull is a fish form chine line to help give
her better tracking than other hard-chine kayaks. The sheer is swede form so you can
more easily take a vertical power (paddle) stroke. The bow and stern are stressed to
give you better strength and a very clean shape. This means that the Anuri’s entry and
exit is smooth like that of a finely tuned multi-chine hull.
The cockpit of this boat has plenty of room and the large hatches hold loads of gear.
Note that the rear of the cockpit is low for those paddlers who enjoy practicing their rolls.
Yet the deck rises quickly to give you more leg and foot room. If you’re wearing wet
boots you can comfortably fit up to size 14 feet under the deck. You can turn her flat or
if you wish you can lean her and carve crisp turns.
The Anuri 16 tracks perfectly, paddles great and easily performs nimble turns. She’s as
fast as the wind so we named her Anuri, the Inuit word for wind. Whether you’re a
novice or an experienced paddler you will feel at home in the cockpit of this beautiful
craft.

The following is good for both the Solace 16XL “Extra” (0n page 3-4), Anuri 16 (previous
page) and the Solace 18XL “Expedition” (below) and the Solace EX “Extreme” series.

There are double bulkheads behind the cockpit; this allows you to install a day
hatch (optional) for greater safety and convenience. If the day hatch is not
needed simply leave out the second bulkhead when you’re completing the final
bulkhead installation.

Note: The round black hatch cover, being an option is an extra cost, so when
placing an order for this kit please ask for hatch kit number 6BLK-S/S.

expect the very best hull shaping available, from a Waters Dancing kit and
the 18XL delivers, her hull is beautiful and clean through the water.

Description
If you’re looking for a speedy escape into nature and a boat
that will turn heads on a Sunday paddle then you will want
one of the new Solace “Extreme” series kayaks.
The "EX" stands for “EXTREME”, and designer Don Moore
has pulled out all the stops to blend just the right lengths,
beams and shapes to yield three truly high performance
touring kayaks. Just add water to these floating rockets and
you will be amazed at the smooth acceleration, outstanding
stability, excellent tracking, and carrying capacity of these
unique craft.
Customers have described them as the worlds most
beautiful kayaks. The flared bow, and v-shaped fore decks
are designed to shed water and keep you dry. The Solace
EX series have a lower aft deck for ease of rolling and their
vertical stern increases the waterline length. This
combination gives the Solace EX series a very unique
profile. Experienced paddlers claim that comfort plays a
major role in the performance of any touring kayak. With this
in mind, Don Moore has designed the upswept fore deck to
provide more leg and foot room.
In addition, you have two cockpit styles to choose from (see
photo of Lightning 17) and like all our kits they come with a
removable seat. Ergonomically designed for comfort, the
seat comes with hip braces and adjustable back brace.
Combined with our knee braces and foot braces these
features allow you to customize your Solace EX for
maximum comfort and efficiency.
Since 1955 we have been offering the best kits at the lowest
prices. We proudly present the Solace EX series, so you can
join the rest of us who love paddling in style in the great
outdoors.

Duet 16: Double touring kayak kit

Dimensions: 16’ long; 30” beam *Weight: 50 lbs.
*Building time: 100 hours. (approx.) Joints: QuickLock Connector System
*Cost: $1389.00 Cdn. Funds

No provincial taxes added, G.S.T. applicable to Canadian residents only. (Plus shipping)
Description

The prototype for the Duet 16 (a double kayak) was finished in the spring of 2000 and is
now in production. The Duet 16 has a roomy cockpit, two seats, and is a beautiful boat
for day trips around the lake cabin, fishing, and drifting down rivers. It’s multi-chine
(four) hull is very stable. You and a companion can pack enough gear, in her hatches,
for a week or more. Though designed as a double the Duet 16 can be paddled as a
single kayak. Larger paddlers will appreciate the spacious cockpit. I found her light,
lively and maneuverable when paddling her alone.

The Duet is great for paddlers who want a wider, more stable boat, with a little more
comfort. If more legroom is required or a large load is being carried, the front seat can
easily be removed.

If you’ve been thinking of building a canoe the Duet 16 may be a good alternative. A
kayak paddles much easier than a canoe with greater stability.

But…….if it’s a canoe you really need, see our Waters Dancing Explorer 16’
Canoe Kit!

Description
The Explorer 16 is a beautiful stitch and glue canoe with some unique features: The
seats are contoured to fit, making even long trips comfortable. They adjust for 12” of
travel and can be easily removed.
The front seat can be turned around for paddling as a single. The ultra light stitch and
glue carrying yoke is very comfortable, allowing a portage when necessary. There are
removable 6” airtight ports at each end of the canoe so there is a dry place to store
valuables and there is approximately 300 lbs. of combined flotation.
The high volume hull will hold a payload of about 700 lbs. The shallow vee bottom
multi-chine (four) hull is exceptionally stable while at the same time is highly
maneuverable when running your favorite river.
The Explorer 16 is a great family canoe for day use or tripping. Less experienced
paddlers may add a keel (not included in the kit) to the exterior of the hull to assist the
tracking in standing water (lake).

Customer Feed Back
Lightning 14

I wanted to let you know how everything is going with the Lightning 14 recently purchased for my 15 yr.
old son.

After the kit arrived and was unpacked, I was pleased with the care and time taken in assembling all of
the components of the kit. Everything was broken down into individual zip lock bags with an inventory
sheet of the contents, making it easy to find. The schematic showing all of the numbered pieces made
the inventory check a snap.

I have built several stitch and glue boats from both Pygmy and San Javier. While they have nice products,
the Lightning 14 is the most complete kit that I have built so far. All of the extras that came with your kit
are appreciated.

I was very pleased with the quality of the manual, the precision of the cuts and the logical progression of
construction. Your manual is by far the best builder’s guide I have ever had the pleasure to follow.
Whoever compiled the manual should get a raise!

All throughout the building process, I was amazed at how well and easily everything came together. The
puzzle joints of the panels allow perfect joins and easy alignment of the hull panels. The temporary
stations forms and puzzle joints ensured a hull that was fair and straight without the alignment problems
experienced with other kits.

Overall, I am completely impressed with every aspect of your designs, helpful staff, ease of construction
and value for my dollar. I look forward to building more of your designs in the future.

Thank you,

John Minor

Don,

I wanted to let you know my impressions of paddling the Lightning 14 that I built for my son recently.
After all of the final touches were completed, I had to take this little beauty out for a test run on our local
reservoir, before presenting to my 15 year old son.
I was somewhat concerned about just how well my more than ample girth would fit into the cockpit,
especially while wearing gum boots. I was pleasantly surprised that despite the snug fit, the position and
posture encouraged by the seat was secure and comfortable!
The initial stability is excellent; novice paddlers will feel confident and secure. After a few brisk stokes, I
was surprised at how beautifully this boat glides! The handling is great; the hull responds very well to
leaned corrections. At 14 feet, this boat turns effortlessly with very few strokes required (unlike most of my
bigger boats).
This boat is FAST! It slides through the water with barely a whisper and is very easy to maintain an
expedition pace without much effort. I can’t help comparing it to the Golden eye 13 that my son had
paddled (until he outgrew it). While both are comparable in stability, the Lightning 14 is much faster. The
seat is also very easy on the backside. When paddling in heavy wind, the boat tracks true and handles
wind waves with aplomb.
Overall, the Lightning 14 is a real winner! My son loves the fact that he can easily keep pace with me, and
that the boat does exactly what it is supposed to without any surprises.

Thank you for your good work!

Lightning 17

The kayak was launched yesterday, Oct. 6, 02. The boat paddles like a dream. Very stable, accelerates
quickly, tracks straight as an arrow and turns quite easily. I am a novice kayaker so I didn't put her
through all of the paces experts could in the calm conditions of the launch but I could make her turn just
by leaning. I can't wait for more challenging seas. The seat fits me perfectly with no modifications, and I
feel nice and secure in the cockpit.

I found the whole building process quite enjoyable, from opening the box to putting on the last coat of
varnish. Your instructions were excellent, and except for a few misreads on my part, everything went
exactly as described. I would not hesitate to recommend you boat to anyone.

I was out this morning in False Creek. Not a cloud in the sky and dead flat calm. One of those mornings
that make you glad to be alive. I was out just paddling through the marinas looking at boats and watching
the morning evolve. The kayak maneuvers around the various marinas and anchored vessels almost by
itself. I am extremely happy with this vessel.

Attached are a few photos of the launch off Jerico Beach, English Bay,
Vancouver. Thanks for the experience.

Lightning 17

Nov. 4., 2002

I have just completed building the “Lightning” 17 ft Kayak, and I want to let you know that I thoroughly
enjoyed the experience. I wholeheartedly agree with the words of the founder of Waters Dancing, the late
Mr. Jim Moore, that it is the right to say that I built the craft, that makes me feel so good.

This is my first boat building project. I am not an expert craftsman. I would venture to say that almost
anybody with a minimum experience and tools can build the “Lightning”. The manual is well written and
easy to follow.

I would also like to thank Don and Jeff, at Waters Dancing, for their great support throughout. I asked
many foolish questions but was never let down and I think that the personal attention they showed me
was the main ingredient in the success of the project. Their involvement was proof to me that small
companies have great advantages over the more impersonal big corporations.

Now it is November and I cannot get the kayak in the water until Spring due to the ice conditions. I guess
I am in for a long winter!

Sincerely,

Henning F. Rasmussen, P.Eng.

Waters Dancing Advantage

*Building times, Costs, & Weights:
Keep in mind when you’re comparing building times, costs, and weights, that our
kits include more components than other kits. The weight listed for each model
reflects the extra hardware we include for the finished product opposed to other
kit providers. Our boats will take no more time to build and will be no heavier
than the others (in most cases our hulls will be faster to build). Other kit
manufacturers only quote building times for the basic boat. Our building times,
costs, and weights include all the time and components for the finished boat, with
the stitch and glue adjustable seat, hip braces, bulkheads, hatches with rubber
seals, graphite, varnish, paddle park, and deck hardware.

About Waters Dancing
Waters Dancing is a family owned business spanning five decades. It was established by my
father in the 1950’s. Although he was an aeronautical draftsman, boat building was truly his
life’s work.
My lifelong passion for the outdoors started early. On my seventh birthday, my father gave me
a kayak he had built. It was 12’ long, canvas covered and painted blue. Sometimes I created a
sail for it with two branches and one of my dad’s shirts - sort of a “spinnaker with sleeves”. By
adulthood my passion had grown, I spent months of each year hiking and paddling in the
Canadian wilderness.
I began my apprenticeship as a child, and have over forty years experience in boat building and
design. In the early days, we hand-lofted everything we designed. It took the best part of a
year to do the designing, pattern making, prototyping, redesigning, building, manual writing,
production and tooling to bring a boat kit to market. Now in collaboration with Brian Kendall, a
professional engineer, using computers to design our boats, it takes approximately six months
to complete the task. We use a computer-controlled router to cut parts to a repeatable accuracy
of .003 of an inch. Between Brian and I, we have well over 85 years of design experience.
When I was a boy my grandfather drummed into me the belief that whatever I did should be
done well; well enough that I would be proud to put my name on it.

I am proud to introduce to you our Waters Dancing Boat Kits.

OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU

It is our intention to make it possible for you to experience wilderness travel and the deep
fulfillment it gives -- a feeling that can only be gained while paddling a boat created with your
own hands.
We have put together everything you will need to create a world-class craft. Settle into your own
beautiful customized kayak, slip out onto the water and feel the deep sense of peace that
comes from being at one with nature.
World Class Components:

We use only top quality components in our kits, including BS1088 Lloyds rated Okoume
mahogany marine plywood (4mm, 6mm and 18mm). We supply epoxy resin with a clear
coating non blushing hardener at no extra cost. Other kit companies charge extra for a non
blushing hardener, if they have it at all. We also use our exclusive “QuickLock System” TM
Interlocking Connector System on most of our newest models.
The QuickLock System has been designed and perfected exclusively by Waters Dancing
Boat Kit Company. This system holds a number of advantages for you as a boat builder: (1) It
easily distinguishes the bow panels from the stern panels. (2) It automatically takes care of
longitudinal alignment of the panels (no more string lines and measuring, no more cutting
plywood butt blocks). (3) You cannot connect the wrong panels together (they won’t fit). You
can’t join the pieces upside down (they won’t fit). (4) Joining our panels is a “snap” you save
four hours or more over traditional methods, and you always get a clean, attractive joint! (5)
You gain increased accuracy, greater strength and better shaping than with either butt blocks or
scarf joints. The QuickLock System eliminates potential flat spots.
Comprehensive Manuals:
Waters Dancing manuals are exceptionally comprehensive (an average of approx. 150 pages
with photos and CAD drawings). We do not know of any other kit providers who explain the
“how to” in such detail. You will also receive the 18 page understanding epoxy manual, a
complete guide for using epoxy. Every step of construction is carefully detailed.

Our kits and manuals make it possible for the most hesitant beginner to create their own

Kit Materials and Components:
Our kits come complete with all the CNC router pre-cut hull and deck parts which are made from
4mm BS1088 Lloyds rated marine Okoume mahogany plywood; the best quality available. We
include an adjustable seat that is so comfortable that it rivals any of the production boats
molded seats. We also include the fiberglass cloth, epoxy resin with clear coating non blushing
hardener, metering pumps, bulkheads, hatches, deck hardware, paddle park, all stainless steel
nuts, bolts, and washers, 2015 flagship varnish and graphite to make the bottom of your kayak
wear like steel. Rubber gloves, small glue brushes, squeegee, mixing tubs, stitch wire and
syringes are also included. We supply everything you need to finish the boat with the exception
of the sand paper, varnish brushes, and foam rollers. We even give you the dimensions for
lengths to cut the webbing strips used to secure the hatch covers.

15
Detailing:
We grain match all the decks and hull parts. This feature significantly enhances the look of your
finished boat. This matching process involves laying out and cutting all the parts in the order
they will later be assembled. The benefit is that the grain pattern may run from one part to the
next all the way up the side of your boat.
To further enhance your boat’s appearance, we receive our plywood from the factory by the
container load. This is important because each veneer face is matched to the previous sheet so
the hull often has the effect of being book matched.
These may be subtle things but they add to the overall beauty of the finished product. Consider
it an extra thank you from us for choosing the best, a Waters Dancing boat kit!

INTRODUCTION
This manual contains all of the information necessary to make your boat building
process enjoyable and successful. These step-by-step assembly instructions will help
you to build your kayak using the “stitch and glue” technique.

To be of any value, you will need to read, yes read, the manual. We urge you to read
this manual from cover to cover before you start building. Then, as you build, carefully
re-read each step to make sure you understand it completely. We also recommend that
you read the 18 page understanding epoxy manual, included with your kit, before you
begin working with epoxy.

A large number of photos and diagrams add to the usefulness of your manual. Watch
for the following:

Time  To help you plan, estimated times for each step are provided.

 Note whether the entire step must be completed non-stop

(continuous), or if your work can be interrupted (start/stop).

Caution!  Caution warnings indicate that a part may be ruined if a step is not
completed as described.

Keys to Success  Key messages on the most efficient and effective ways to
complete the step.

This manual gives you recommended techniques. Experienced builders may find
shortcuts or prefer other ways to approach a step. Each section begins with the
following quick reference chart:
