The greatest impact on the development of Filipino national

consciousness, his publication of two novels- Noli Me Tangere,

in 1886 and el Filibusterismo in 1891, Rizal drew on his
personal experiences and depicted the condition of spanish
rule in the islands, particularly the abuses of the friars. Although
the friars and Rizal’s books banned, they were smuggled into
the Philippines and rapidly gained a wide readership.

Jose Rizal is commonly known as the “Father of Filipino

Nationalism” not because he helped establish an independent
Philippine state (in fact, he specifically and explicitly denounced
the 1896 Revolution against Spain), but because he was
instrumental in the creation of the conceptualization of
“Filipino” as an ethnopolitical collective – as “a people”, or, in the
language of nationalism “the people”. In other words, Rizal is
acclaimed the father “Philippine Nationalism” for his intellectual
and idealistic support for Philippine Independence.

As an analysis of his works and speeches will show, Rizal did not
support violent uprisings or revolutions in calling for an
independent state. He was not a war monger but rather an
academic seeking as much as possible a peaceful, logical, and
political solution for the independence of Filipinos from colonial
rule over the political and social aspects of life in the
Philippines. He preached for and encouraged Filipinos to
recognize their potential as Filipino citizens and also their
obligations and duty to their motherland.

Love for Country- Rizal showed that Filipinos had

their own native land to mind and love and that land
was the Philippines, not Spain. Rizal's love for the
motherland meant absolute independence for the
country.
Song of Maria Clara-
To tell stories, express emotions, or convey a belief in
faith and To expose the ills of Philippine society during
the Spanish colonial era.
Hymn of Labor-
Jose Rizal's patriotism is shown in this poem “Hymn To
Labor” where he urged his fellowmen to strive and
work for their country whether in war or in peace.
On the indolence of the Filipinos- With all the
abuse and mistreatment they have been subjected to,
any people would become indolent!” He clarified the
word “indolence” as meaning sluggish or lazy as a
result of illness; he was a doctor and he knew whereof
he spoke.
Letter to the women of Malolos- “To the Women of
Malolos” centers around five salient points (Zaide
&Zaide, 1999):
1. Filipino mothers should teach their children love of
God, country and fellowmen.
2. Filipino mothers should be glad and honored, like
Spartan mothers, to offer their sons in defense of
their country.

3. Filipino women should know how to protect their
dignity and honor.
4. Filipino women should educate themselves aside
from retaining their good racial values.
5. Faith is not merely reciting prayers and wearing
religious pictures. It is living the real Christian way
with good morals and manners.

The Philippines: A Century Hence- to forecast the

future of the country within a hundred years. Rizal felt
that it was time to remind Spain that the
circumstances that ushered in the French Revolution
could have a telling effect for her in the Philippines.
