What’s More

Activity 1.1 - Complete the table

Element Symbol Atomic Mass Atomic no.

Hydrogen H 1.00794 1
Lithium Li 6.941 3
Sodium Na 22.98976 11
Activity 1.2- write the notation for the ff: elements

1. Hydrogen – 12H
2. Lithium - 37Li
3. Sodium - 1123Na

Activity 1.3 – Answer the following questions

1. Heavy elements were formed only billions of years later, after the formation of
stars 200 billion years after big bang. The density inside a star is great enough
to sustain fusion for the extended time periods required to synthesize heavy
elements. Stars are hot and dense enough to burn hydrogen-1(¹H) to helium-4
(4He).
2. Combining The conversion of hydrogen to helium is slow, the complete conversion of the
hydrogen in the core of the sun is calculated to take more than ten billion years.

3. Hydrogen and helium are much more abundant than other elements, and there is an abundance
peak near iron, it is generally supposed that heavy element have been built up from light
element

4. The combination or fusion of three alpha particle (helium nuclie 4He) to form a carbon nucleus
(12C) is known as the triple alpha process. The fusion process is not all simple since there dose
not exist a stable configuration with an atomic mass of 8 (8Be) that is formed by the fusion of
two 4He nuclie

5. Several nuclear fusion processes occur in the red giant aside from hydrogen fusion. The first is
the triple alpha process. Alpha particles are fused to create heavier element all the way to iron,
making the core and star itself more massive
