Files types
To use the Fiber Cable 2 Software you must first have suitable trace files available
• Files previously saved using Fiber Cable
• Files transferred to your PC (see “Connecting the MTS to the PC” on page 24)
Fiber Cable is compatible with the OTDR files, .sor type, respecting the Bellcore
standards 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0
The following types of files can be opened with Fiber Cable 2 Software:
The traces files can be opened from this Explorer, either via the Folders tab or via
the Trace files tab.
The Folders tab displays all the files of the directory, whatever are the file formats,
whether the Trace files tab displays exclusively the trace files.
NOTE
The file can be opened from the Folder tab: once the directory is selected, dou-
ble click on the file to be opened on the lower part.
Only one file can be opened at a time!
Sorting files
If you click on a second header, the sorting will be kept based on the first header,
then on this second one.
Click on a third header to sort the files according to the 3 headers, in the order in
which they are selected.
Click on the column heading to be moved and maintain the right button pressed
while displacing the column at the position wished. This allows to modify the order
of files according one column and get a clearer visualization of the files.
NOTE
This function is available exclusively with OTDR, OSA and LTS files.
Click again on one file to close the trace and remove it from the traces in overlay.
With OTDR traces, up to 10000 traces can be opened in the same window.
However, according to the number of traces open, the display is different:
• Up to 12 traces in the same window: the display is the classical one, as shown
in Figure 23 on page 38 for example.
• With more than 12 traces open, the display is simplified, the trace can be
selected from the Summary tab:
If a trace is opened, and then another trace of the same format but from a differ-
ent directory (selected in Folders tab) is opened via the Trace files tab, the one
previously opened will be closed (after asking for saving if there has been modifi-
cations).
2 Select the drive and directory using the standard navigation options.
3 Select the type of file you want to open (OTDR, DWDM, etc.). See Table 1 on
page 30.
The file selection menu shows, in the upper part, the list of files of the directory
with the type and format you have selected, and in the lower part, general
information for each trace. The information displayed depend on the file
format.
4 To simplify the selection of a trace from a long list of traces, you can specify
the order in which the traces are displayed. To do this, left click on the column
heading name to sort the trace file using the criteria you have selected.
For example, clicking on the Date column heading name will sort the trace
files by date.
5 To open the trace file, either left-click on the trace you require from the list of
traces menu and then left-click on the Open button, or double left-click on the
required trace.
To do this:
1 Select the required files: maintain Ctrl key press and click on files wished

If you move the mouse pointer in the trace display window, the pointer will be repre-
sented by:
1 A small circle on the trace
2 A small triangle on the X and Y axis.
This representation is useful to show the precise coordinates of the trace point,
corresponding to the mouse position.
Figure 27 Symbols used to check the mouse position according to the trace
1
2
The pointer position indicator shows the distance and attenuation from the start of
the fiber to the point that the cursor intersects with the trace. It also indicates when
the cursor is in the zone preceeding an event, the number and characteristics of this
event.
Tooltips
The current cursor is associated with a Tooltip.
The tooltip gives the coordinates of the point of the trace showed by the mouse
pointer, as well as the direction of the A and B cursors. The closest cursor is under-
lined.
When the mouse pointer stays more than 1 second on a point of the trace, a bigger
tooltip is displayed, giving more information (loss, reflectance, slope etc.).
Cursors A and B
You can position two cursors (A and B) and then have delta results between the
reference cursors. These cursors are dotted vertical lines.
NOTE
For PMD and CD ODM traces, you can position only one cursor (A).
With CD OTDR traces, both cursors are available exclusively in OTDR view; in
the other views (Dispersion, Slope and Delay) only Cursor A is available.
To move a cursor:
1 Select it
2 Drag it with the mouse,
or
Click on the position you want
Cursor selection
To select a cursor:
1 Directly click on one Cursor button in the View ribbon
or

• Cursor Auto (selected by default): the active cursor is the closest one of the
current cursor. Directly click on the display window allow you to immediately
move the active cursor. This option allows you to move either the right or left
cursor.
• Cursor A / Cursor B: this option is used to exclusively move the A or B cursor.
• Cursor A + B: move the both cursors simultaneously, without modifying their
distance.
NOTE
You cannot make a cursor selection with PMD and CD ODM traces.
Trace information
Once the A and B cursors are positioned on the trace, their respective position and
the difference between the two locations are displayed at the bottom of the trace.
NOTE
The parameters associated to Cursor B are negative if the Cursor A is set after it.
Cursor B value
But before you print a trace for the first time you have to:
• select the page setup and enter the required parameters.
• check the printer selection and choose the printer options you want to use.
Pressing the ? button displays all the codes you can use.
The following codes are available:

If no logo path has been defined in the Page Setup screen, and if the Logo
parameter is selected in the Contents settings, the VIAVI logo is displayed by
default.
Other parameters are available, and depend of the type of trace (OTDR, WDM, AP
etc.) which will be printed.
• Table of results
The Results table is printed under the trace if the parameter Table of results
with trace is selected.
It is printed on the second page if the parameter is not selected.
• Summary
If Summary is selected, the Summary table is printed, alone, with the first
trace.
Select the parameter Summary on the First page if the summary table must
be displayed on the first page of the report. If not selected, it is printed with the
first trace.
• Results summary: the Results summary table is printed under the trace if the
parameter Results summary on first page is selected.
It is printed on the second page if the parameter is not selected.
Mosaic setup
Choose the Mosaic presentation (number of pages to be printed on a sheet):
All traces combined All the traces opened in the same window will be printed
on the same page with the summary table below.
Separate traces Each trace opened in the same window will be printed
on a separate page, with its associated results table.
NOTE
In «Combined» mode, only the details of the active trace are printed.
NOTE
Using the Mosaic setup 2 x1 and the Single traces parameter, you can directly
and easily printout a bi-directional analysis with separate traces and results in a 2
columns format.
The summary is automatically displayed in a separated page from the traces pages.
NOTE
The printer displayed is either the printer defined as default printer on your PC or
it may be the printer defined before a trace is opened (see “Configuring the
traces printing” on page 21)
NOTE
You can choose to print the trace on paper or in pdf; for which a pdf writer soft-
ware is mandatory (Adobe Acrobat / PDFCreator...).

• the Output.is defined on PDF (see “Configuring the report output” on page 60)
and the Report button is pressed (see “Print using Report button” on
page 61).
• or if the Report > PDF menu is used (see “Print in PDF” on page 61).
In the other cases, if the N squares are not filled, the printer waits until the empty
squares are filled.
For example, for a mosaic 2 x 2, if only three pages are filled, when a print is
submitted, the printer waits until the empty square(s) is/are filled.
NOTE
There is no spooling printing with OTDR traces printing if they are in overlay. The
report is generated with empty squares.
To force a printout when all the mosaic squares have not been filled,
select Eject page (n/n) from the Report menu.
This Eject page option is followed by the number of occupied
squares from the selected mosaic presentation (in our
example: 2/4).
You can choose to add one or several trace results to the report in order to fill the
empty squares:
1 Click on Report > Print... and validate to print the same trace in the empty
square. Repeat the process as many times as the number of empty squares

NOTE
The differences between A and B are negative if the cursor A is positioned after
cursor B.
Results Table
Whenever you make a measurement, an event result table is generated. This table
is divided in two tabs:
• on the first tab, all the Results of events on the active trace. The contents
depend of the mode; normal, bidirectional, both end...
• on the second tab, a Summary table for all the different traces available
To display the results table in a floating window, double click on the upper bar (gray)
of the table.
To reset the results table under the trace, double click on the blue bar.
To reduce or enlarge the table results, set the pointer onto the upper part of the
results table window and maintain press mouse left button while moving the cursor
up or down.
If the alarm thresholds are validated in the menu Parameters / Alarms... (see
"Defining alarm thresholds" page 90) a message, above the table, gives the global
result with respect to the threshold.
To the right side of the table results are displayed the alarms threshold values if
active.
Icons Description

If the alarm thresholds are validated in the menu Alarms... (see "Defining alarm
thresholds" page 90) a message, above the trace information window on the right
of the screen, gives the global result with respect to the threshold.
If a mouse click is made on one line of the table, the cursor of the trace is automat-
ically positioned to the given event, this with the zoom area previously used.
Summary table
In the Summary table, the following elements are given for each trace:
• the color of the trace
• the file name (and, in brackets, the number of traces open)
• the wavelength (in nm)
• Total Loss (in dB)
• Link ORL (in dB)
• Total Length
• Splice max. (in dB)
• Connector max. (in dB)
• Reflectance max. (in dB)
• Number of events
When you click on a line in the summary table, the corresponding trace turns active.

detected on the other trace(s).
The OptiPulses is an option that uses multipulse acquisitions and advanced algo-
rithms to deliver detailed information on every element of the link.
The Optipulse allows to combine the traces of several acquisitions, with the same
wavelength and with several pulsewidths, into one single trace.
Click on one event in the results table to automatically turns the trace on which it
has been detected active.
The Optipulses traces are saved to the «.csor» format, and cannot be used for the
report generation.
The only measurement functions available are Auto Measurement and Delete the
events.
The SmartLink screen displays the graphical representation of the link with all the
events detected, whether they are detected on the trace with shortest pulse or on
standard trace.
Defining Parameters
Before you make measurements you can define the specific parameters you want
to use, depending on the device used to acquire the trace.
2 Select / enter the required parameters or left click on the Default button to
select the default parameters.
See “Defining global parameters for all traces” on page 17 for description of
the parameters.
3 Click on Ok to validate and return to the trace display.

All modifications of the Global parameters will be applied to all other traces open
(PMD, OSA, ODM...).
Click on the Cancel button to cancel the modification and come back to the
trace display.
Click on the Default button to select the default values for OTDR display:
– Results on trace: all are selected
– Results on all the traces: deselected
2 Enter the required values or left click on the Default button to select the
default values:
– Reflectance: select a defined value or enter a value in the corresponding
field.
– Splices: select a defined value or enter a value in the corresponding field.
– Masks: enter the required value in the corresponding fields.
– Number of splitters: select Discover / None, or select a number from the
list. If a number of splitters is configured (from 1 to 3), define the type of
splitter for each position.
NOTE
The order of splitter is always from location A.
– Fiber end: select Auto, or select a number in the list to define the detection
threshold of the end of fiber (Auto or Semi-Auto measurement).
– OTDR connector: select this parameter if the OTDR connector must be
detected, and appear in the results table.
– Events after fiber end: select this parameter if the events after the end of
fiber must be displayed (Auto measurement).
– Ghosts detection: select whether they must be detected, not detected or
detected as reflectances and not as ghosts (No analysis parameter).
– Total Loss: select if the total loss is calculated Before events or After
events. If Before Events is selected, the column will display Total Loss
(OTDR); if After Events is selected, the column will display Total Loss (IL).
Select if the Link start and/or Link End Connector must be included in
the calculation of the Total Loss (both are selected with Default configura-
tion).
– Backscatter coefficient: modify it if necessary, for each wavelength, in
single or multi mode
3 Click on the OK button to accept the displayed values and return to the trace
display.
You can also define thresholds with predefined values: click on Predefined Thresh-
olds and select one predefined configuration
The thresholds for the active trace are displayed on the right column.
An alarm indicator appears on the upper part of the trace parameter and in the
results table if one or several results exceed the thresholds defined (see "Results
table content" page 80).
NOTE
The alarm thresholds defined are saved and recalled with the trace. Once trace
is reopened, define new alarm thresholds to modify the current ones.
The event reflectance is always measured unless all the elements of the event
cannot be measured, e.g. peak saturation or an event lost in noise. In such cases
instead of giving the exact calculated reflectance value e.g. -30 dB, the display
shows >-30dB to indicate that the reflectance is worse than -30 dB.
It is also possible to detect two events that are very close together, even though all
the elements of each event cannot precisely be measured.
An automatic measurement detects all the events on the trace, displays the
measured value for each event, and generates an event result table.
Slope Splice
Manual measurements
NOTE
If you have not positioned the cursors before starting a slope measurement, the
following alert message is displayed: «Impossible slope measurement.
You should position two cursors.».
You can make as many slope measurements on the trace as you require as long as
the sections do not overlap. If the slope measurement section overlaps another
section previously defined and measured, the new measurement replaces the
previous measurement. Any other measurements calculated from this slope
measurement are also deleted (refer to “Measuring Discontinuity on the Trace”).
Result of reflectance
The splice measurement values then remain associated with the trace even if the
display is modified (Zoom function, etc.). To erase the splice measurement values
you must use the Delete all events button (refer to “Deleting all the events and the
results” on page 103) or make a new measurement.
NOTE
Before positioning a cursor, for greater precision, it is preferable to zoom in on
the trace (refer to “Zoom-in” on page 49).
NOTE
The reflectance is calculated between the cursor A and the highest point near the
cursor B.
NOTE
If you have not positioned the cursors before starting a reflectance measurement
an alert message is displayed: «Impossible reflectance measurement. You should
position two cursors».
The reflectance result then remains associated with the trace even if the display is
modified (Zoom function, etc.…).
To delete this result use the Delete all events button (refer to “Deleting all the
events and the results” on page 103) or make a new measurement.
Incident energy
ORL = 10 log ----------------------------------------
Reflected energy
1 Position the A & B cursors at the beginning and end of the section of the fiber
you want to measure (refer to “Cursors function” on page 50).
To accurately position a cursor it is often easier to first zoom-in on the display
(refer to “Zoom Function” on page 48).
2 Select Optical Return Loss in the Manual
sub-menu.
The section of the fiber measured is shown shaded green. A
measurement result box in the top right-hand corner of the
window shows:
– the Reflectance Coefficient used (in dB)
– the ORL value (in dB)
– the Contribution to the reference point (in dB)
NOTE
If you have not positioned the cursors before starting an ORL measurement the
following alert message is displayed: «Impossible Optical Return Loss measure-
ment».
It stays displayed just until a new measurement is carried out by Optical Return
Loss function in the Manual menu even if the display is modified (Zoom function,
etc.…).
To delete the ORL measurement result, select Optical Return Loss from the
Manual menu a second time.
ORL
Use the following procedure to measure the contribution caused by a specific event:
1 Make an ORL measurement on a section of the trace.
2 Position the cursors to indicate the start and end points of the event you want
to measure the contribution for.
The original position of the start of the ORL measurement is indicated with a
solid green cursor. The section of the fiber where the event you are measuring
is located is shown shaded green and the contribution value to the reference
point in dB is displayed in the measurement result box.
Start of ORL
Defining a Mask
To help you to detect faults on the fiber you can define a mask (or threshold) for a
section of the trace that will indicate the first point of the trace that exceeds the
selected threshold value.
In order to do this you must first specify the mask threshold value in dB and define
the section of the trace where you want to apply the mask.

Once you have selected the Events mode you will not be able to use cursors
unless you hold down the Ctrl key.
The event is repositioned and the measurements relative to the new location are
updated.
or
Click on the button Set event
4 Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you have positioned all the events required.
NOTE
To accurately position markers it is often easier to first zoom-in on the display
(refer to “Zoom-in” on page 49).
This operation also deletes all measurement results associated with the events.
As the successive actions on events are memorized, press several time will
cancel the successive previous actions.
Events edition
In the Events sub-menu, the key Edit events... gives access to the events edition
table.
This table allows to modify or delete an event, or to add and position precisely an
event

select Paste and invert markers selection.
NOTE
In Both end measurement mode, when events are pasted on destination trace
with inversion on X from the source, a fiber end marker is automatically set,
whereas the events in position «0km» is automatically deleted.
Markers group
You can select a group of events in order to move it on the trace, copy it to another
trace, copy the characteristics of the events in a spreadsheet file or a text file, etc.
NOTE
Pressing the Ctrl key allows you to select non consecutive events in the group.
The selected events are black. The group is defined by a rectangle with a double-
lined edge on the right-hand side indicating that a group is drawn from this point.
• Paste markers from the clipboard to the current trace, a spreadsheet or a text
file.
• Paste markers from the clipboard to the current trace, a spreadsheet or text
file, with distance inversion (both end measurement).
Trace selection
Once two traces or more are displayed in overlay, the trace selec-
tion can be done via two methods:
• either by selecting the radio button of the trace to activate in
the trace information window
• or by clickingr onto the trace which must be selected
(active). The «hand» cursor displays. In this case, the radio
button of the selected trace is automatically active.
Trace Shift
Once you are in multi-traces mode (see "Opening several traces in the same
window" page 37 and page 32) you can shift traces horizontally and vertically from
the active trace to make measurements on the active trace more easily.
Different procedures allow you to shift one or several traces according to a fix one.
• If more than two traces are displayed only the manual procedure and the one
using the mouse are possible.
• If only two traces are displayed, directions are available in the tool bar to auto-
matically shift the two traces horizontally, vertically or in both directions.
Manual procedure
1 Open the Shift menu and select Shift…
2 Enter the required X and Y shift for each trace, from the displayed dialog box.
3 Click on Apply to see the chosen shift without closing the dialog box or click
on OK to apply the shift and close the dialog box.
4 If necessary, click on Vertical spacing button to open a new dialog box and
enter the vertical spacing between traces and click Ok to validate.
NOTE
In Zoom mode, as it is impossible to set Cursor A & B, the traces shift is impossi-
ble.
3 Choose the required shift (in dB) to be applied between each trace
4 Click on OK to apply the shift and close the dialog box
5 Click on Open in the same window to display the selected traces with the
shift previously defined.
To do this,
1 Click on the OTDR icon on the upper left side of the screen
2 Select Multi-traces 1
3 Select Differences between traces. 3
The difference is calculated by using the logarithmic 2
values.
A new trace directly opens on FiberCable 2 Software.
Click on Save > Save as... to save the trace resulting from difference between
traces on your PC.
The default filename for the trace is DIFF0000.sor but can be modified at
file saving.
NOTE
You can only have the differences between traces acquired with the same type of
OTDR, the same pulse width, for fibers with the same refractive index. Unless
the following message displays: Impossible difference calculation. The
traces do not meet the conditions: same indices, same analyzers, same
pulse width».
NOTE
You cannot make any calculations on the difference trace from the Calculation
menu.
You cannot use the button Difference between traces... if more than 2 traces
are opened.
Measurement Principles
The Both End measurement function uses the Multi-trace function (see "Opening
several traces in the same window" page 37 and page 32).
The traces obtained form the two measurements (one in each direction) are
displayed with event markers. They are first displayed superimposed, then one of
them is inverted (left ↔ right), in order that the markers associated to the same
events are on the same horizontal position.
The Both End measurement result table show the following loss types:
• The A → B and A ← B losses correspond to the measurements made in each
direction.
• The third value corresponds to the average of the two previous values. It
corresponds to the real value of the insertion loss of the event.
• Add new markers if they are missing on the active trace and present on the
other trace, or distribute the events when a link is done.
1 Swap the traces using the swap radio button of the trace parameters window
or directly set the mouse pointer on the second trace to select it as the active
one.
2 Make on this trace the required adjustments and measurement as described
previously.
The Both End measurement results can be saved to a file (see "Copying the results
table of OTDR traces" page 67).
Linking 2 events
To link 2 other events than those automatically linked when both end measurement
is performed:
1 Click on the button Link 2 events
NOTE
You can link 2 events via the results table:
In the results table, left click on the event number on A → B trace to be linked to
another event number and, maintaining mouse left button pressed, drag the
pointer onto the event number to be linked to the other one on A ← B trace
Link 2 events
If one of the events linked to another is deleted, the link is automatically performed
with the event nearest of the one deleted.
NOTE
The pointer on one line of the results tale allow to display an help tooltip on
events link.
Distribute events
Once the link of 2 events has been established, it is possible to distribute the events
on both traces: if there is more events on the A → B trace than on the A ← B trace,
then those events can be copied onto the A ← B trace and vice-versa.
NOTE
Events can be added on traces (see “Adding an event within event mode” on
page 101 and “Adding an event with a cursor” on page 102). The events will be
added on both traces if a both end measurement has been performed.
Once a link is performed, and once both traces are saved, even with a different
name, the link is kept in memory when both traces are re opened and when a both
end measurement is performed.
If one of the trace is opened with another trace than the original one, the link previ-
ously performed with a both end measurement is not kept in memory.
Multi-traces analysis
When displaying multiple traces (see "Opening several traces in the same window"
page 37 and page 32), a multi-traces analysis can be generated.
The aim of this function is to get the maximum number of events on fibers where
they are almost invisible/undetectable.
3 Enter the distance tolerance: exclusively the events located in this distance
range will be considered as identical. this parameter depends on the pulse
width and resolution.
4 Enter the minimum frequency: minimum number of times when the event
appears on the displayed traces.
You can also click on the button on the right of the dialog box to apply the
suggested values for both parameters.
5 Click on the Ok button to generate the analysis.
Bend evaluation
When two OTDR traces are opened in the same window, it is possible to perform a
bend evaluation if the two visible traces have been acquired with different wave-
lengths.
If one or several bends have been detected, the results table is filled with the bends
detected, as well as, for each one, the distance:
1 Click on the Multi-trace to open the sub-menu
2 Select Bend evaluation
3 If the table of results is not displayed, select Results table on the sub-menu of
the Display button.
Bend table
You can come back at any time to the standard results table by deselecting Bend
evaluation in the Multi-traces menu.
Opening traces
To display an oeo trace with FiberCable 2 Software, two methods are available:
• either open directly an existing file in oeo format
• or open two sor files, one with direction A -> B and one with direction B -> A.
To easily find two sor files in different direction, use the File Explorer of the

enter the value of this threshold. A warning appears in the results table when
these thresholds have been exceeded (see Figure 73 on page 135).
3 In the case of a spectrum acquired on a OSA-155, OSA-160 or OSA-200 enter
the channel detection threshold.
4 In the case of a spectrum acquired on a OSA-155 enter the wavelength and
level difference required for the importation.
5 Left click on the OK button to accept the displayed values and return to the
trace display.
Display results
The trace represents power (in dBm) as a function of frequency (in THz) or wave-
length (in nm). The channels detected are represented by peaks
Results table
Whenever you make a measurement a results table is generated containing the
results of each channel detected.
In the absence of statistics (see “Table contents” on page 142) the parameters given
for each channel are:
1 the number of the channel
2 the frequency or the channel wavelength according to the unit selected
3 the spacing between the channels or the offset from the grid in THz / nm / Ghz
4 the power level of the channel in dBm
This parameter indicates the calculated total channel power level from the
detected channels, achieved by mathematical power integration over ± ½ min
channel spacing around the channel center frequency.
NOTE
The power integration method is used to avoid wrong channel power measure-
ment with modulated signals having a larger bandwidth than the optical filter res-
olution bandwidth of the OSA.
NOTE
For OSA-500R and OSA-500RS, with I-OSNR setting, this parameter indicates
the "true" I-OSNR (in-band OSNR) measured with the polarization nulling
method.
7 The ratio between the power of the channel and the composite power in %.
NOTE
With OSA-155, OSA-160, OSA-200, OSA-320 traces this parameter cannot be
calculated. It is in grey in the Display sub-menu.
The gain tilt and gain slope results are represented by a black line on the trace and
values are display on the upper right part of the trace, under the mini trace repre-
sentation.
Total power
value
To remove the Total power calculation, deselect Total Power in the Display sub-
menu.
Display of a grid
The display window of the trace can include a grid to facilitate verification of the
position of the channels.
One of the following grid types can be selected for the WDM/OSA traces:
• Conventional: the space interval is indicated in the top right corner of the
window. It varies according to the zoom level.
• ITU-T: it uses the ITU-T G.692 channel plan channel spacing
available: 25, 50, 100 or 200 GHz.
• Defined by user...: corresponds exactly to the channels. Enter
position of the first vertical line (wavelength of the first channel),
spacing between channels and the number of channels.
To remove the grid, select No grid in the Display > Grid sub-menu.
Vertical shift
When one or more traces are displayed, it is possible to shift them vertically.
1 Select in the Display menu the option Shift Y...:

By default, the results are sorted by channel number in ascending order.
To modify the way in which sorting is carried out, select Results sorting in the
Results menu, then choose the desired sorting criterion:
• Channel number
• Frequency / Lambda
• Level
• SNR
On the trace and in the table, it is possible to make the cursor pass successively
from one channel to another one according to the selected sort order. To do this:
1 Choose the cursor A or B for use on the trace in the View ribbon.
2 Click on Next channel or Previous channel in the Measurement ribbon to
make the cursor jump back to the previous channel or on to the following
channel.

CD measurement on a section
To measure the CD on a section of link, this section must be limited by specific
events (reflective events or Fresnel) like connectors.
WARNING
Performing a CD measurement on a section is only available in OTDR mode, not
in Dispersion, Slope or Delay mode.
If the section is limited by the events X and Y, two acquisitions are made from the
origin of the link:
– one up to the event Y.
– the other to the event X (reference).
NOTE
The different measurements must be performed with strictly the same module.
Then, the table gives results of the section of fiber. The reference value for every
OTDR trace is given on the right of the trace.
Bi-directional measurement
In order to measure a long link which cannot be entirely measured from one end, a
bidirectional measurement shall be used if the link has an event (reflective events
or Fresnel) which can be detected from both ends.
WARNING
Performing a bi-directional measurement is only available in OTDR mode, not in
Dispersion, Slope or Delay mode.
Then two acquisitions are made, one from the origin up to X, the other from the end
up to X. Both results are added to give the global results of the link.
O Y E
NOTE
For this measurement both acquisitions must be performed with the same CD
OTDR module.
Then, the table gives the results of the whole fiber. The reference value for every
OTDR trace is given on the right of the trace.

A cable report is carried out using OTDR, PMD, CD, AP or LTS measurements
made on the fibers of the cable by a T-BERD/MTS fitted out with an OTDR, PMD,
CD, AP or LTS module.
All the trace files must be transferred on the hard disk of the office computer
equipped with Fiber Cable and a spreadsheet program such as Microsoft Excel or
a PDF reader.
• Fiber Cable is used to generate the report for the cable.
• This report can be post processed using the spreadsheet program before
printing.
• If Microsoft Excel is available, the macro delivered with Fiber Cable can setup,
format and print the report.
Requisites
In order to use the Fiber Cable Measurement Report function you must first have
certain specific measurement data available on the computer where Fiber Cable is
installed:
• In distinct directories, sets of result files corresponding to OTDR traces
(measurements in both directions for all the fibers of the cable), PMD traces,
CD OTDR traces, CD ODM traces, AP traces, LTS results and scope inspec-
tion test results.
• The OTDR measurement conditions (instrument type, wavelength and pulse
width) and the deviation thresholds on distance and attenuation.
• The list of fibers of the cable.
• The fiber to be used as a standard reference for the other fibers in the cable.
• The required alarm thresholds to be used for the report.
NOTE
If no measurement folder is opened, click on the button New measurement
report to create a new one;
The measurement report cannot be created if one trace is opened.

the CTRL key and click on the other file names you wish to select: they are
highlighted.
NOTE
The Optipulses files (CSOR combined in SOR format) are managed in read-only
mode, the icon is displayed on the left of the file Name column.
NOTE
The files transferred in the selection list will be displayed in blue in the list of all
the files, on the left column.
CAUTION
If the files transferred from PMD, CD, AP, LTS or Inspection traces have a differ-
ent cable and/or fiber identifier than the OTDR files transferred, then a warning
message is displayed and the transfer will not be performed.
However, in all tabs except OTDR, a warning message informs you that the
choice can be forced by selecting first the PMD, CD, AP, LTS or inspection files,
and then the OTDR ones.
Selection List
The files transferred to the selection list are automatically sorted by fiber; the same
wavelength, the same cable and the same fiber in both directions.
Whenever one or several files are added or removed from the list, all the files are
analyzed in order to correctly sort them and detect major incoherences in the
measurements. The results of this analysis are detailed fiber1 by fiber with an icon
and explanation text in the State column.
1. For OTDR measurement, fiber refers to the two or four trace files of the same wavelength, the same pulse
width, the same cable and the same fiber measured from both ends.
Available commands
All the possible actions on the selected files are listed either in the ribbon or in the
contextual menu displayed if you right click in selected file list. Buttons give a quick
access to the main actions.
The actions are described below and the direct access buttons are indicated when

Selecting parameters
For the generation of your report you have to define cable parameters and specific
OTDR, PMD, CD, AP and LTS measurement parameters. Different tabs give
access to each type of measurement and to the report preview.
Global Parameters
You can modify the report global parameters:
1 Click on Global Parameters... button on the ribbon.
WARNING
Any modification on the Global Parameters will be applied on all traces opened
(OTDR, WDM/OSA, PMD, CD, AP and LTS).
Click on Font to select the desired text format for the report.
Cable Information
1 Click on the button Cable Information on the ribbon
2 Enter additional information on cable and fiber (manufacturer and type), and
the manager and technician names.
• Click on the Clear button to delete all the information entered since the dialog
box has been opened.
• Click on the Cancel button to delete the entered information and close the
dialog box.
• Click on the OK button to save the entered information and close the dialog
box.

Parameters dialog box displays.
Measurement setup
Select the Measurement setup tab:
1 Select the number of launch cable (0 to 3) at the start and at the end of the
fiber under test by clicking on the corresponding radio buttons.
2 Select the type of measurement:
• Traditional: for one fiber, one measurement in both directions, therefore two
trace files.
• Loop measurement: two fibers are looped at one extremity, while the acquisi-
tion is carried out at the other end. The result is two trace files for the two
fibers. The loop parameters are defined under the Loop tab (see below).
3 If you do not wish to include in the report certain results linked to fiber launch
cables, then activate the appropriate check box.
Delete slopes of launch Remove the slope values and the results linked to launch
cable from report cables. With a loop measurement, this removal is done
automatically.
Delete connector values Remove the results linked to the connectors situated
of launch cable from between the launch cable and the measured fiber.

Event Sniffer
Due to the quality of the splices, all events are often not detected on a single fiber.
An existing event on a trace will remain unchanged unless its presence on all traces
is below the minimum frequency defined (see Figure 133 on page 236).
In that case, it will be removed unless it has notable values (significant loss or reflec-
tance).
Bi-directional traces are analyzed one at a time before copying the missing events.
Procedure:
1 Transfer the files in the selection list (right hand area)
2 Click on Event Sniffer icon.
A configuration box pops up.

Preview tab will display results for both directions, with a warning on missing
result(s).
NOTE
Generating the report is generally possible even if the preview window shows
errors. Some serious inconsistencies can prevent the generation of the folder; in
this case, the corresponding lines are in red and a message is displayed.
The Report generation function allows to generate the data for all the fibers directly
(in txt or pdf format).
The measurement report is generated and, for TXT files, stored in the spreadsheet
file in ASCII tab delimited format.

The report with several functions (OTDR, PMD...) will be generated by fiber num-
ber order.
To help you do the formatting as efficiently as possible a special Excel macro file
(FiberCableMacro.xls) is delivered with Fiber Cable, in the Fiber Cable directory.
This file is used to select the user language and the required number of decimal
digits, and to setup the pages for printing.
