Read and analyze the
heinz dilemma
1 And give your moral judgement about
this situation. Please refer to the PT
written in Module 1.
“ A moral dilemma exists when the choices
and commitments available do not enable
moral consequences. In such cases, choices or
actions are expected or required, and all
available choices violate moral obligations.
Moral dilemmas are not uncommon when
organizations and individuals work to meet
competing interests, or when individual
morals and professional obligations are in
direct conflict.

To solve this Heinz’s dilemma, the thinker
has three options.
⊹ Heinz should not steal the drug because it
is disobedience of the law.
⊹ Heinz can steal the drug but should be
punished by the law.
⊹ Heinz can steal the drug and no law
should punish him.

5
Heinz should not steal the drug because it is
a disobedience of the law.
This decision means that Heinz cannot save
his wife. His wife dies and the rich drug
dealer becomes rich. Moral justice was not
enforced, even if the law was followed.
This is a Pre-conventional level of Moral thinking.
6
Heinz can steal the drug but should be
punished by the law.
This decision allows Heinz to save his wife,
but Heinz remains in prison. Heinz made a
moral choice, but he had to be punished.
This is a Conventional level of Moral thinking.

7
Heinz can steal the drug and no law should
punish him.
With this decision, Heinz can save his wife
and both will be happy. This idea is based
on the idea that we should reject the rigor
of the law and do justice for moral reasons.
This is a Post-conventional level of Moral thinking.

These examples show that every coin
has two sides and every decision or
course of action has two approaches.
Which option you choose is as different
as the moral opportunity cost incurred.
That is, ignore the consequences of
choosing an alternative approach
depending on the severity of the
situation at hand. The secret is to weigh
your choices between complete
selfishness and unconditional altruism.

Thank you!
